Book excerpt: Herbert Penfold, being desirous of benefiting the daughter of an intimate friend, and Ralph Conway, the son of a lady to whom he had once been engaged, draws up a will dividing his property between them, and places it in a hiding-place only known to members of his own family. At his death his two sisters determine to keep silence, and the authorized search for the will, though apparently thorough, fails to bring it to light. The mother of Ralph, however, succeeds in entering the house as a servant, and after an arduous and exciting search secures the will. In the meantime, her son has himself passed through a series of adventures. The boat in which he is fishing is run down by a French privateer, and Ralph, scrambling on board, is forced to serve until the harbour of refuge is entered by a British frigate. On his return he enters the army, and after some rough service in Ireland, takes part in the Waterloo campaign, from which he returns with the loss of an arm, but with a substantial fortune, which is still further increased by his marriage with his co-heir.

Book excerpt: One of the 28th: A tale of Waterloo Reading "One of the 28th A Tale of Waterloo" was an unusual experience, one I enjoyed very much. I downloaded the free kindle edition out of curiosity based only on the title. There was no description of the contents with the listings on Goodreads.com and Amazon.com only a statement that the digital edition had been created by a team of volunteers. Likewise, nothing is said about the author. I'm a reader of military history and historical fiction and thought the book might be one of these, and it is the latter in a sense. At the same time, because of one of the two interrelated plots there is reason to believe this is a YA book. Some of the writing supports this view, a sort of action/adventure tale. On the other hand, the second plot and the language that accompanies both stories reads like Jane Austen, high praise indeed. Of course, the book is set in Austen's era of the early nineteenth century, but still the manners and mores depicted are hers, albeit in a gothic setting a bit like "Northanger Abbey." It seems to me the style and much of the content might be a little too cultivated for many YA readers, particularly American ones, but it was a very enjoyable read for me.
