Book excerpt: On Vital Reserves: The Energies of Men; the gospel of relaxation By William James Excerpt Everyone knows what it is to start a piece of work, either intellectual or muscular, feeling stale--or cold, as an Adirondack guide once put it to me. And everybody knows what it is to "warm up" to his job. The process of warming up gets particularly striking in the phenomenon known as "second wind." On usual occasions we make a practice of stopping an occupation as soon as we meet the first effect layer (so to call it) of fatigue. We have then walked, played, or worked "enough," so we desist. That amount of fatigue is an efficacious obstruction on this side of which our usual life is cast. But if an unusual necessity forces us to press onward, a surprising thing occurs. The fatigue gets worse up to a certain critical point, when gradually or suddenly it passes away, and we are fresher than before. We have evidently tapped a level of new energy masked until then by the fatigue-obstacle usually obeyed. There may be layer after layer of this experience. A third and a fourth "wind" may supervene. Mental activity shows the phenomenon as well as physical, and in exceptional cases we may find, beyond the very extremity of fatigue-distress, amounts of ease and power that we never dreamed ourselves to own, --sources of strength habitually not taxed at all, because habitually we never push through the obstruction, never pass those early critical points. For many years I have mused on the phenomenon of... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable prices. This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics, unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader organically to the art of bindery and book-making. We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes beyond the mere words of the text.

Book excerpt: An essay by William James "On Vital Reserves" furnishes a welcome opportunity to possess a work of speculative originality that at least is strongly suggestive of the occult philosophy. Professor James draws our attention to certain underlying reserves of force, a sort of "second wind," that often become available after a definite fatigue point has been passed and that may even be followed by a third and fourth "wind." With the majority of men these reserves never show themselves. Most of us live far below our possibilities. We allow the fatigue point to be the frontier of our energies. We know nothing of our maximum unless some emergency shall call it forth, but without that spur it remains unsuspected. And so the author asks what are actually the limits of human faculty and how may we learn to reach them? The first point to agree upon in this enterprise is that as a rule men habitually use only a small pari of the powers which they actually possess and which they might use under appropriate conditions. These reserves of force are usually called forth by abnormal conditions, and then all the ordinary laws of health seem to be in abeyance. The new energies have rules of their own and will produce a veritable revolution in the habits of the bodily organism. - Professor James reminds us of the case of Colonel Baird-Smith, who defended Delhi during a six weeks' siege. In spite of many terrible wounds and a debilitating sickness he sustained life on an almost exclusive diet of alcohol and opium-the only things for which he craved. Not only had these drugs none of their usual effect, and "the excitement of the work was so great that no lesser one seemed to have any chance against it. and I certainly never found my intellect clearer or my nerves stronger in my life." But as soon as the emergency was over "a perfect loathing of my late staff of life took possession of me".--Theosophical Outlook, Volume 2

Book Synopsis Clinical Psychology by : C. Eugene Walker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a survey of some of the major areas of clinical psychology. No attempt has been made to include every area relevant to clinical psychology; the choices are selective but represent the wide range of areas touched by clinical psychologists. For some years I have felt the need for a book that provides students with more of a historical introduction and context from which to view current clinical psychology than is included in most textbooks. The issues and problems of clinical psychology have been with us since the beginning of time; however, most psychological literature is written with the bias that anything older than five or ten years is not relevant. Those who attempt to take a long-range view of clinical psychology are sometimes able to recall the early development of the field in the 1930s and 1940s. In this text, I asked the authors to begin with a brief survey of ancient and medieval history to set the stage for a discussion of current research and developments in the field. I hope that a presentation of this sort will provide the reader-whether advanced undergraduate, graduate, or professional-with a sense of perspective and context from which to view and understand clinical psychology.

Book Synopsis Psychedelic Consciousness by : Daniel Grauer
Download or read book Psychedelic Consciousness written by Daniel Grauer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the use of psychedelics for understanding ourselves, connecting with the world around us, and enacting outer change through inner transformation • Explores sacred tools and technologies to help us reestablish a lost ideology of unity, with a specific focus on natural plant/fungi psychedelics • Looks at the history of psychedelics and their role in facilitating natural intelligence’s ability to increase itself through ongoing analysis of its own experience • Provides guidelines for safely using natural plant/fungi psychedelics and integrating them into society to access unified consciousness and restore balance to our world Our ecological, social, and political issues all stem from the ideologies that drive our collective actions. In contrast to our innate humanity, which is rooted in unity, these ideologies have led us to believe that we are separate from each other, separate from nature, and separate from the results of our actions. Such a worldview encourages individuals to maximize self-interest, which then causes fragmentation, conflict, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Offering practical steps that we can take to heal ourselves and our fragmented world, author Daniel Grauer explores the use of sacred tools and technologies, such as natural psychedelics, meditation, and yoga, in order to reestablish an ideology of unity, work in symbiotic harmony with the Earth, and restore our world as a sustainable and prosperous whole. Grauer explains how individuals--and by extension societies--benefit from safely accessing transcendent states of consciousness, such as those provided by psychedelics. He explores how psychoactive substances have been used throughout history all over the world for healing, personal growth, spiritual development, and revealing hidden truths, such as in the Eleusinian Mysteries, Soma practices in Vedic India, and rituals in several South American indigenous cultures. Drawing on the plant intelligence work of Paul Stamets and Stephen Buhner, Grauer shows that the growth of individual and collective intelligence is hindered by the prohibition of psychedelics, which naturally foster humanity’s capacity for analysis, innovation, and cooperation. In addition to creating a sense of unity with all things, psychedelics offer the mind a new perspective from which to analyze its experience and heighten its awareness. Drawing on his own experience and research, Grauer provides guidelines for how to safely use natural plant/fungi psychedelics in order to access the unified consciousness of our ancestors and induce the states of awareness we need to restore natural harmony to our world.
