Book excerpt: Originally published in 1971 The Countryside on View is a handbook which provides extensive information about the many ways in which visitors to rural areas may find out about what they have come to enjoy. A major part of it concerns small countryside centres which house information services and which are designed to give both the casual visitor and organised educational parties a deeper understanding of the place they have come to see. The book also has chapters on the techniques involved in the showing of historic monuments and buildings, from lonely cromlechs and romantic ruins to churches, house, bridges and other structures which are still in use. A pioneering work in the field of Museum Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the history of the idea of the objective journalist and how this very ideal can often be used to undercut itself. In The View from Somewhere, Lewis Raven Wallace dives deep into the history of “objectivity” in journalism and how its been used to gatekeep and silence marginalized writers as far back as Ida B. Wells. At its core, this is a book about fierce journalists who have pursued truth and transparency and sometimes been punished for it—not just by tyrannical governments but by journalistic institutions themselves. He highlights the stories of journalists who question “objectivity” with sensitivity and passion: Desmond Cole of the Toronto Star; New York Times reporter Linda Greenhouse; Pulitzer Prize-winner Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah; Peabody-winning podcaster John Biewen; Guardian correspondent Gary Younge; former Buzzfeed reporter Meredith Talusan; and many others. Wallace also shares his own experiences as a midwestern transgender journalist and activist who was fired from his job as a national reporter for public radio for speaking out against “objectivity” in coverage of Trump and white supremacy. With insightful steps through history, Wallace stresses that journalists have never been mere passive observers. Using historical and contemporary examples—from lynching in the nineteenth century to transgender issues in the twenty-first—Wallace offers a definitive critique of “objectivity” as a catchall for accurate journalism. He calls for the dismissal of this damaging mythology in order to confront the realities of institutional power, racism, and other forms of oppression and exploitation in the news industry. The View from Somewhere is a compelling rallying cry against journalist neutrality and for the validity of news told from distinctly subjective voices.

Book excerpt: Seneca Village—a vibrant nineteenth-century community of predominantly Black landowners and tenants—flourished just west of The Met's current location until the city used eminent domain to seize the land in 1857, displacing its residents to make room for the construction of Central Park. The Met's latest Bulletin, Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room, imagines a different history in the form of a new type of installation that departs from traditionally Eurocentric period displays to present a fictional but resonant domestic space. Texts by Ian Alteveer, Hannah Beachler, Michelle Commander, and Sarah Lawrence honor the real, lived history of the Seneca Village residents, while also exploring works by Black creators from the eighteenth century to the present day through the empowering lens of Afrofuturism. Including images of new works by Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Roberto Lugo, and Cyrus Kabiru, as well as an original graphic novella by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator John Jennings, this publication foregrounds generations of Black creativity and looks forward to a resilient future.

This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph databases provide a natural way of storing and querying graph data. In contrast to relational databases, queries over graph databases enable to refer directly to the graph structure of such graph data. For example, graph pattern matching can be employed to formulate queries over graph data. However, as for relational databases running complex queries can be very time-consuming and ruin the interactivity with the database. One possible approach to deal with this performance issue is to employ database views that consist of pre-computed answers to common and often stated queries. But to ensure that database views yield consistent query results in comparison with the data from which they are derived, these database views must be updated before queries make use of these database views. Such a maintenance of database views must be performed efficiently, otherwise the effort to create and maintain views may not pay off in comparison to processing the queries directly on the data from which the database views are derived. At the time of writing, graph databases do not support database views and are limited to graph indexes that index nodes and edges of the graph data for fast query evaluation, but do not enable to maintain pre-computed answers of complex queries over graph data. Moreover, the maintenance of database views in graph databases becomes even more challenging when negation and recursion have to be supported as in deductive relational databases. In this technical report, we present an approach for the efficient and scalable incremental graph view maintenance for deductive graph databases. The main concept of our approach is a generalized discrimination network that enables to model nested graph conditions including negative application conditions and recursion, which specify the content of graph views derived from graph data stored by graph databases. The discrimination network enables to automatically derive generic maintenance rules using graph transformations for maintaining graph views in case the graph data from which the graph views are derived change. We evaluate our approach in terms of a case study using multiple data sets derived from open source projects.

Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality. In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
