Had there been one book, or even a dozen books, I should have hesitated long to thrust my effort into so select and easily identified a company. But the numbers that have appeared have included some so unusually hasty and badly done, I dare cherish hope for a comfortable nonentity such as the present volume. Moreover, the sanguine reader may be assured of certain soothing things. Here is nothing official. No luminary of any War Cabinet has endorsed anything I write, or prefaced it by any eulogistic foreword. The views pre sented and the things seen are the views and observations merely of an ordinarily intelligent layman, not in the least concerned with the purely military or strategic aspects of the deadly game. Book excerpt: A rediscovered World War I masterpiece—one of the few memoirs about the Italian front—for fans of military history and All Quiet on the Western Front An infantryman’s “harrowing, moving, [and] occasionally comic” account of trench warfare on the alpine front seen in A Farewell to Arms (Times Literary Supplement). Taking its place alongside works by Ernst JŸnger, Robert Graves, and Erich Maria Remarque, Emilio Lussu’s memoir as an infantryman is one of the most affecting accounts to come out of the First World War. A classic in Italy but virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, it reveals in spare and detached prose the almost farcical side of the war as seen by a Sardinian officer fighting the Austrian army on the Asiago plateau in northeastern Italy—the alpine front so poignantly evoked by Ernest Hemingway in A Farewell to Arms. For Lussu, June 1916 to July 1917 was a year of continuous assaults on impregnable trenches, absurd missions concocted by commanders full of patriotic rhetoric and vanity but lacking in tactical skill, and episodes often tragic and sometimes grotesque, where the incompetence of his own side was as dangerous as the attacks waged by the enemy. A rare firsthand account of the Italian front, Lussu’s memoir succeeds in staging a fierce indictment of the futility of war in a dry, often ironic style that sets his tale wholly apart from the Western Front of Remarque and adds an astonishingly modern voice to the literature of the Great War.

The old front line was the base from which the battle proceeded. It was the starting-place. The thing began there. It was the biggest battle in which our people were ever engaged, and so far it has led to bigger results than any battle of this war since the Bat tle of the Marne. It caused a great falling back of the enemy armies. It freed a great tract of France, seventy miles long, by from ten to twenty-five miles broad. It first gave the enemy the knowledge that he was beaten. Very many of our people never lived to know the result of even the first day's fighting. For then the old front line was the battlefield, and the No Man's Land the prize of the battle. They never heard the cheer of victory nor looked into an enemy trench. Some among them never even saw the No Man's Land, but died in the summer morning from some shell in the trench in the old front line here described. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years of the Great War: A Comprehensive Review With the declining importance of the war correspondent, due to the immensity and stricter censorship of modern warfare, has come the rise of the great war editor. The new center of military information is this master student who, versed in the geography and topography of the fighting countries, and possessing an accurate estimate of the strength of the contending forces and a first-hand knowledge of the morale of the men, traces the ebb and flow of the lines on each of the fronts; watches with hawk eyes the seeming minor events that indicate a coming drive or retreat; and, with almost prophetic pen, points out what to expect shortly at a given point. The one American editor ideally equipped for his great task is Frank H. Simonds. For years before this war Mr. Simonds was a reporter for metropolitan newspapers in positions that brought him into contact with the biggest men in this country. In Washington and Albany he acquired a political insight that proved invaluable to him when he came to study the present war where so many military movements are undertaken with an eye to purely political effect in one country or another. For years before this war Mr. Simonds made the study of geography and military history his hobby. He pored over all available accounts of the strategic campaigns of the American Civil War and those European struggles, the Napoleonic and others, that were fought over the same ground where the front line trenches now stand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “witty, entertaining, educational” blend of travel memoir and Civil War history (Scott L. Mingus, Sr, award-winning author of Flames beyond Gettysburg). Gettysburg is a small, charming city nestled in south central Pennsylvania—but its very name evokes passion and angst, enthusiasm and sadness. For about half the year its streets are mainly empty, its businesses quiet, the weather cold and blustery. For the other months, however, the place teems with hundreds of thousands of visitors, bustling streets and shops, and more than a handful of unique larger-than-life characters. And then, of course, there is the Civil War battle that raged there during the first days of July 1863 at the price of more than 50,000 casualties. Its monuments and guns and plaques tell the story of the colossal clash of arms and societies, just as its National Cemetery bears silent witness to at least part of the cost of that bloody event. Yet, the author explains, he did not fully appreciate the profound meaning of this mammoth battle, its influential characters (living and dead), its deep meaning to our society, until he visited this hallowed ground in person. In this travelogue, you can join him at a host of famous and off-the-beaten-path places on the battlefield, explore the historic town as it is today, and learn fascinating facts and stories. Also included are maps and caricatures provided by award-winning cartoonist Tim Hartman.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Great Battles The following articles were published soon after the events described in them, and are reprinted now to supply an occasional demand among the writer's friends. The account of the Battle of Buena Vista was prepared from the detailed reports of the different commanders, with the aid of Carleton's Book, and verbal descriptions from parties present in the fight. General Taylor expressed himself satisfied with its accuracy; and it obtained the very undeserved credit, at the time, of being the production of an eye witness. Many years after the account of the Battle of Buena Vista was written, the writer was struck, as he read Thiers' Consulate and Empire, with the extraordinary similarity that existed between the Battle of Buena Vista and the Battle of Marengo, even in the fact that while Marengo made Buonaparte' Emperor, Buena Vista made Taylor President. Book excerpt: An “exciting and informative” account of the Civil War battle that opened the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, with illustrations included (Lone Star Book Review). Charles Knight’s Valley Thunder is the first full-length account in decades to examine the combat at New Market on May 15, 1864 that opened the pivotal Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who set in motion the wide-ranging operation to subjugate the South in 1864, intended to attack on multiple fronts so the Confederacy could no longer “take advantage of interior lines.” A key to success in the Eastern Theater was control of the Shenandoah Valley, an agriculturally abundant region that helped feed Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Grant tasked Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel, a German immigrant with a mixed fighting record, and a motley collection of units numbering some 10,000 men to clear the Valley and threaten Lee’s left flank. Opposing Sigel was Maj. Gen. (and former US Vice President) John C. Breckinridge, who assembled a scratch command to repulse the Federals. Included in his 4,500-man army were Virginia Military Institute cadets under the direction of Lt. Col. Scott Ship, who’d marched eighty miles in four days to fight Sigel. When the armies faced off at New Market, Breckinridge told the cadets, “Gentlemen, I trust I will not need your services today; but if I do, I know you will do your duty.” The sharp fighting seesawed back and forth during a drenching rainstorm, and wasn’t concluded until the cadets were inserted into the battle line to repulse a Federal attack and launch one of their own. The Union forces were driven from the Valley, but would return, reinforced and under new leadership, within a month. Before being repulsed, they would march over the field at New Market and capture Staunton, burn VMI in Lexington (partly in retaliation for the cadets’ participation at New Market), and very nearly capture Lynchburg. Operations in the Valley on a much larger scale that summer would permanently sweep the Confederates from the “Bread Basket of the Confederacy.” Valley Thunder is based on years of primary research and a firsthand appreciation of the battlefield terrain. Knight’s objective approach includes a detailed examination of the complex prelude leading up to the battle, and his entertaining prose introduces soldiers, civilians, and politicians who found themselves swept up in one of the war’s most gripping engagements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collision of Empires is the first major historical work on the Eastern Front during World War I since the 1970s. One of the primary triggers of the outbreak of World War I was undoubtedly the myriad alliances and suspicions that existed between the Russian, German, and Austro-Hungarian empires in the early 20th century. Yet much of the actual fighting between these nations has been largely forgotten in the West. Driven by first-hand accounts and detailed archival research, Collision of Empires seeks to correct this imbalance. The first in a four-book series on the Eastern Front in World War I, Prit Buttar's dynamic retelling examines the tumultuous events of the first year of the war and reveals the chaos and destruction that reigned when three powerful empires collided. A war that was initially seen by all three powers as a welcome opportunity to address both internal and external issues would ultimately bring about the downfall of them all.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War Therefore a sub-tributary of the and the Somme is a plateau which rises about r so feet above the water-level, and in some places attains a height The plateau is a bare rolling countryside of open fields, with two tracts of woodland - the one ust north of the known as the Hangard Wood, w le the other, to villers-bretonneux, may be called the Villers Wood. This up land between the Luce and the Somme is the last high und directly in front of Amiens, and upon it the British and rench forces joined hands. If the enemy could carry the plateau thrusting us back at villers-bretonneux and working round Hangar Wood, Amiens would be at his mercy, and the all important railway would robably be lost to us. On the Wednesday fo lowi the glorious Monday on which we bottled up the harbour of brugge the Germans made a bold bid for the plateau. Early on the morning of a4th April they flung some ci ht divisions against the Allied line between the Somme and e Luce. Three of these divisions struck at the British positions to the north and south of Villers Bretonneux, while a similar force attacked the French round about Hangard, and the remaining two began an outflanki movement on the south. The battle opened with the us heavy bombardment, which continued from three o'clock until when the German infantry began to advance.
