Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review the properties of the conventional static measure of changes in economic welfare, national income, in a dynamic economy. We show that it is possible to establish attractive welfare properties by rather simple arguments and that this variable can be estimated from current data. Its welfare properties are identical to those of the static measure: a small change is a potential Pareto improvement if and only if it leads to an increase in this variable. This gives national income welfare properties that are much preferable to those of net national product.

This question has obsessed economists for more than 200 years, and a definitive answer has never been provided. Continuing the influential work begun in The Gains from Trade and the Gains from Aid, (Routledge 1995), Murray Kemp here presents the recent progress he and his co-workers have made in tackling this important question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic growth as we know it today cannot persist indefinitely if it entails continuous degradation of natural resources and the environment. While in a few countries around the world it appears that environmental degradation has been the result of rapid economic growth, in the vast majority of the developing countries the environment has been equally spoiled despite slow or even negative economic growth. This book provides new insights on the common roots of economic stagnation, poverty and environmental degradation which, unfortunately, generally reside in misguided government policies and priorities. By doing this, the volume seeks to provide a broader policy option framework than those found in conventional policy analyses, mainly dominated by the "Washington Consensus". It shows that a major omission of the conventional view is that governments tend to allocate government expenditures in a biased way favouring subsidies to the economic elites to the detriment of investments in public goods, including human capital, R&D, as well as the development of institutions (environmental and otherwise), which are vital for long run growth, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the late 1980s, when the ideas of sustainability and sustainable development to the forefront of public debate, conventional, neo-classical economic thinking about development and growth had rarely given any consideration to the needs of future generations, or the sustainability of natural resource use. Defining sustainability broadly as intergenerational fairness in the long-term decision making of a whole society, and using established economic concepts, this selection of refereed journal articles brings a famously ill-defined concept into sharp focus, providing academics at all levels with a formidable research tool. Spanning thirty years of the most important philosophical, theoretical and empirical contributions from both critics and defenders of neo-classical assumptions and methods of economic analysis, this focused collection of papers constitutes a unique, balanced resource on the full range of intellectual debates surrounding the economics of sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of GDP and why we need a better measurement of growth In one lifetime, GDP, or Gross Domestic Product, has ballooned from a narrow economic tool into a global article of faith. As The Little Big Number demonstrates, this spells trouble. While economies and cultures measure their performance by it, GDP only measures output. It ignores central facts such as quality, costs, or purpose. Sustainability and quality of life are overlooked. Losses don't count. The world can no longer afford GDP rule—GDP ignores real development. Dirk Philipsen demonstrates how the history of GDP reveals unique opportunities to fashion smarter goals and measures. The Little Big Number explores a possible roadmap for a future that advances quality of life rather than indiscriminate growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's remarkable economic growth in recent years has made it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its rapid growth, however, has been accompanied by widening regional disparities, poverty, malnutrition, and socio-political instability. Understanding India's dualistic development process and the emergence of the Indian economic miracle are crucial in solving the obstacles India faces in transforming itself into a modern 21st-century economy. The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy features research on core topics by leading scholars to understand the Indian economic miracle and the key debates confronting the Indian economy. The Handbook moves beyond traditional boundaries by featuring areas of research that will be important in the future, setting an academic standard for current and future research on the Indian economy. The Handbook is divided into eight major sections featuring expert contributions on a host of issues. These range from India's historical development before and after 1947; tackling poverty through innovative public policy; industrialization; health, education, and the demographic transition; governance and institutional reform; macroeconomic policy reform; and India's interaction with the world economy. A final Looking Ahead chapter reflects upon an agenda for economic research in the 21st century. Ambitious in scope, diverse in its coverage of topics, and a rare unified and comprehensive treatment of India's complex and dynamic development process, The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy is a must-read for both researchers who are new to the field, as well as those who want to update and extend their knowledge to the frontier of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection celebrates the career of Sir James Mirrlees, who received the 1996 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on income taxation and its extension to information and incentive problems. His contributions have proved fundamental to the development of a wide range of areas in economics. The 17 papers contained in this volume focus on themes that are representative of Mirrlees' work, including the economics of information, welfare, taxation, project appraisal, and industrial organization. All the contributors have spent time working closely with Mirrlees - either as his co-author or his student - and all are recognized authorities in their fields. The significant new contributions that this collection offers will have wide-ranging appeal, and should prove particularly interesting to scholars working in the areas of microeconomics, microeconomic theory, mathematical economics, and welfare economics.
