The report details the development of simplified design equations (SDEs) for structural response based on three-dimensional (3D) analysis of 830 buried culverts. In addition, the report provides guidelines for conducting 2D and 3D modeling for design situations with conditions not covered by the SDEs. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to roadway and bridge designers.

The said seminar is focused on the actions on structures and the performance of existing populations of structures; the properties and performance of building materials; and the internal and external environments of buildings. The book covers topics such as the methodology for the prediction of the life of existing structures; reliability of service-proven structural systems; and some effects of micro-environment on materials. Also covered are subjects such as the assessment of structures through field measured dynamic response; physical properties of structures investigated by dynamic methods; and the stiffness damage test. The text is recommended for engineers who would like to know more about the strength and lifespan of structures, as well as the effectivity of the materials involved in their construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an edited volume, the goal of which is to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in statistical methods applied to problems in structural bioinformatics (and in particular protein structure prediction, simulation, experimental structure determination and analysis). It focuses on statistical methods that have a clear interpretation in the framework of statistical physics, rather than ad hoc, black box methods based on neural networks or support vector machines. In addition, the emphasis is on methods that deal with biomolecular structure in atomic detail. The book is highly accessible, and only assumes background knowledge on protein structure, with a minimum of mathematical knowledge. Therefore, the book includes introductory chapters that contain a solid introduction to key topics such as Bayesian statistics and concepts in machine learning and statistical physics.

The aim of the book is to expose readers to the meaning and need of PBD, the evolution of PBD to date, its various forms and applications. Various design philosophies and procedures have been described including modelling aspects and hazard considerations backed by examples. Direct displacement-based design (DDBD) and Unified PBD (UPBD) of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings, RC dual systems, steel frame buildings and bridge piers have also been explained. The main features of this book are as follows: • Illustrates performance-based seismic design to achieve the design target by performance objective-oriented design procedure. • Covers modern design philosophies, modelling aspects, concepts in nonlinearities and use of supplemental damping devices. • Contains a chapter on seismic safety of nonstructural components. • Describes UPBD design procedure and examples of different structural systems. • Includes application and examples with reference to SAP2000 software. This book is aimed at graduate students, researchers and professionals in civil engineering, earthquake engineering and structural design.

Book excerpt: Based on a systematic literature review, the book aims to forecast the investment scale of Chinese higher education and the allocation structure of different types of higher education institutions in the next decade. The authors first introduce the complex setting of Chinese higher education finance, including the background and theoretical foundation, as well as an in-depth literature review. Via international comparative data, they explore the adequacy and equity of the financial resources. By applying quantitative methods, such as panel data analysis and time series analysis, they forecast the public investment scale in higher education and the allocation structure and proportion among different types of higher education institutions. In addition, the book investigates the standards of teaching funding and teacher research funding, which are considered the main funding resources of Chinese universities and individual teachers. As China has become the world’s largest country of higher education, "how to provide adequate and equal funds to meet the increasing demand" is of great interest to scholars and policymakers both from China and abroad. The book will also appeal to postgraduate students who would like to know the overall status of Chinese higher education finance.

This book was released on 1990-10-31 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cerebral cortex, especially that part customarily designated "neocortex," is one of the hallmarks of mammalian evolution and reaches its greatest size, relatively speaking, and its widest structural diversity in the human brain. The evolution of this structure, as remarkable for the huge numbers of neurons that it contains as for the range of behaviors that it controls, has been of abiding interest to many generations of neuroscientists. Yet few theories of cortical evo lution have been proposed and none has stood the test of time. In particular, no theory has been successful in bridging the evolutionary gap that appears to exist between the pallium of nonmammalian vertebrates and the neocortex of mam mals. Undoubtedly this stems in large part from the rapid divergence of non mammalian and mammalian forms and the lack of contemporary species whose telencephalic wall can be seen as having transitional characteristics. The mono treme cortex, for example, is unquestionably mammalian in organization and that of no living reptile comes close to resembling it. Yet anatomists such as Ramon y Cajal, on examining the finer details of cortical structure, were struck by the similarities in neuronal form, particularly of the pyramidal cells, and their predisposition to laminar alignment shared by representatives of all vertebrate classes.
