Book excerpt: You Never Know When The Right Guy Will Come Along. . . At least Ana Jacobs has a sense of humor. Between the constant struggle with her incredible shrinking wardrobe and her ever-expanding waistline, her boss the Big Weasel, and her current unrequited love, she needs every laugh she can get. Especially when it comes to Jason Hess. He's the gorgeous, green-eyed reason she joined the improv comedy group Iron Pyrits--and he's also one of her six housemates. Jason is everything Ana has always wanted in a man--he's sweet, responsible, funny, and beautiful to look at. In fact, whenever she does, the familiar zing inside seems to prove that he's the one. But getting him to fall for her hasn't been easy. Is it her size? Her nerves onstage? Or has she missed something that's been right in front of her all along? Maybe the zing factor isn't the most important thing. Maybe the kind of love that jumps out when you're least expecting it is. . . Praise for the Novels of Theresa Alan "A wonderful and fun read not to be missed!" --Chicklitbooks.com on The Girls' Global Guide to Guys "Reminiscent of Bridget Jones's Diary and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Alan's is a novel to be savored like a good box of chocolates." --Booklist on Who You Know

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How to Read a Moment, Mathias Nilges shows that time is inseparable from the stories we tell about it, demonstrating that the contemporary American novel offers new ways to make sense of the temporality that governs our present. “Time is a thing that grows scarcer every day,” observes one of Don DeLillo’s characters. “The future is gone,” The Baffler argues. “Where’s my hoverboard!?” a meme demands. Contemporary capitalism, a system that insists that everything happen at once, creates problems for social thought and narrative alike. After all, how does one tell the time of instantaneity? In this moment of on-demand service and instant trading, it has become difficult to imagine the future. The novel emerged as the art form of a rapidly changing modern world, a way of telling time in its progress. Nilges argues that this historical mission is renewed today through works that understand contemporaneity as a form of time shaping that props up our material world and cultural imagination. But the contemporary American novel does not simply associate our present with a crisis of futurity. Through analyses of works by authors such as DeLillo, Jennifer Egan, Charles Yu, and Colson Whitehead, Nilges illustrates that the novel presents ways to make sense of the temporality that controls our purportedly fully contemporary world. In so doing, the novel recovers a sense of possibility and hope, forwarding a dazzling argument for its own importance today.

Book excerpt: Be Prepared to Lead in the Moment: Assess, think, and respond on-the-spot Impromptu shows leaders how to think on their feet and respond eloquently in every situation. Never have there been so many opportunities to inspire and influence in everyday situations -- elevator chats, corridor conversations, networking gatherings, meetings, and ceremonial events. Indeed, today the most iconic leadership moments are spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment events that reveal the inner workings of the leader's mind. When these impromptu opportunities arise, leaders must be able to listen, think, and respond within seconds. They don't read a script from a page, they convey the narrative that is already in their mind. They can tailor a message—in a meeting, in the corridor, or in a tweet—to influence and inspire any audience. Those who shine in that moment are remembered for their leadership. Those who stumble are remembered for their gaffes, mixed messages, or insensitivity. Nobody remembers the leaders who retreat to their office, formulate a strategic plan, and distribute a memo the following week. Guided by her entrepreneurial success as founder of The Humphrey Group and her firm's work with tens of thousands of leaders over the past 30 years, Judith Humphrey makes clear the importance of preparing to be spontaneous -- as counterintuitive as that may sound! Drawing upon the best impromptu moments from the Greeks to the present, the book looks at every aspect of impromptu speaking. You will learn how to: Think like an impromptu leader Quickly read an audience of one or a thousand Collect your thoughts and craft a persuasive message 'Script' yourself within seconds for any occasion Avoid 'um's' and 'ah's' and use the right words at the right time Discover improv techniques that will enable you to shine Deliver your message with clarity, confidence, and conviction. The ability to speak on the spot is often seen as an innate gift, a talent of 'natural-born' leaders. The truth is, it's a skill that can be learned—a skill that is quickly becoming a must-have for anyone in a leadership position. Impromptu provides clear, actionable guidance to help you reach your full leadership potential. It will enable you to influence and inspire followers on the many 'small stages' that define our daily lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DO YOU WANT TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE, ETHICAL, AND PROFITABLE BUSINESS WITHOUT FEELING LIKE A SELLOUT? Are you willing to be your true self in business and accept the consequences—and rewards—of doing so? People are sick to death of being targeted, manipulated, and conned into sales that don’t enrich their lives. Humanity deserves better than predatory marketing. Customers want to do business with real people, not fakes. They want the truth—your truth—not your BS. In today’s age of increasing transparency, you have to look inside and get 100% real with yourself. With her sharp, expressive writing style, veteran anti-marketer Michelle Lopez Boggs walks you through her unique philosophy for selling without being a sellout. In this book you’ll discover: • Why customers are done with predatory marketing and why you should use the MEI principle—Motivate, Educate, and Inspire— as the foundation for all your content and communication • How being your true self (flaws, emotions, quirks, and all) is the most valuable currency and the most satisfying path to profits • How to infuse your unique voice, personality, talents, and perspectives into every facet of your business from your packaging and email newsletter to your funnel) and how critical this is for growth • The profit-butchering enemy of your attention—and what to focus on instead • Why you should keep the three ride-or-die essentials on your desk (and learn to say “f*ck everything else”) Part sales and marketing, part self-development, and packed with examples and research, The Anti-Marketing Manifesto will guide you to big profits by bringing your best to the people you’re here to serve.
