It has not been easy to get a true picture of the early days, because most of the pioneers have gone, and the records of early settlement are incomplete. Some who read this story will miss facts that to them are very important. Many of these facts we should gladly have used had we known them. There are other incidents that are too recent and too tragic to put into print as yet. Their absence does not prove that we do not know them; but it is neither wise nor kind to print everything one knows. The bare facts have been dressed in something of the garb they wore when they were put into action by the men of yesterday. No sin gle hero will satisfy a story like this unless you call his name Pioneer and the heroines too, are without number. Gathering these records has been a pleasant and profitable task, and it is hoped that our readers will find pleasure and profit in following what has been gathered. It has been gratifying to note the courteous response accorded to the writer by all who were approached for information.
