Book excerpt: Carbon fibers are the main component and load carrier within many high-temperature composites. Oxidative ablation of carbon fibers is the main failure mechanism of high-temperature composites and significantly affects the mechanical properties of the composites. The effects of the ablation of carbon fiber at high temperatures on carbon fiber mechanical properties, nevertheless, have not been systematically studied in the available literature. In the present investigation, the oxidative ablation behavior of carbon fibers from room temperature to 900°C has been systematically investigated by employing a thermogravimetric analyzer and in situ video detection. Detectable carbon fiber weight loss was initiated when the temperature was elevated to 600°C within the air environment. The video images showed that the color of the carbon fiber surfaces changed dramatically and then the fibers disappeared gradually, indicating that the carbon fibers underwent a chemical reaction, i.e., oxidative ablation. The static mechanical strength of carbon fiber at various temperatures was investigated and was found to start decreasing significantly at temperatures above 500°C, even though no obvious oxidative ablation occurred. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectrum reveal that the microstructure transition from graphite to nongraphite carbon is the main reason for strength reduction.

Book excerpt: Carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide matrix composites (C/SiC) are a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material that offers benefits for use in a wide range of high temperature structural applications. However the susceptibility of the carbon fibers to degradation in oxidizing environments has hindered the material's use in certain applications requiring long lives under oxidizing conditions. The susceptibility of carbon fibers to oxidation will be discussed as well as the enhancement (improvement in oxidation resistance) of C/SiC materials. Thermogravimetric analysis of carbon fibers shows susceptibility to oxidation in two distinct kinetic regimes. However, in the thermogravimetric (wt. loss) analysis of unstressed, unenhanced, seal coated C/SiC coupons, the two regimes were not observed due to crack closure and matrix effects, which inhibited the oxidation process. Stressed oxidation (creep rupture) tests put the material under a stress, which is a more realistic condition for many applications. In stressed oxidation tests, the two oxidation kinetics regimes were observed. These tests can provide better insight into how the material will perform in applications involving stress. Stressed oxidation of enhanced materials containing oxidation inhibitors showed significantly improved lives at the specific test conditions considered, although there was susceptibility to oxidation at intermediate temperatures.

Book excerpt: Long fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFT) possess high specific modulus and strength, superior damage tolerance and fracture toughness and have found increasing use in transportation, military, and aerospace applications. However, one of the impediments to utilizing these materials is the lack of performance data in harsh conditions, especially at elevated temperature. In order to quantify the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites, carbon fiber PAA composite plates containing 20% and 30% carbon fiber were produced using extrusion/compression molding process and tested at three representative temperatures, room temperature (RT 26°C), middle temperature (MID 60°C) and glass transition temperature (T[subscript g] 0°C). A heating chamber was designed and fabricated for the testing at elevated temperature. As temperature increases, flexural modulus, flexural strength, tensile modulus and tensile strength decrease. The highest reduction observed in stiffness (modulus) values of 30% CF/PAA at T[subscript g] in the 0° orientation is 75%. The reduction values were larger for the transverse (perpendicular to flow direction) samples than the longitudinal (flow direction) samples. The property reduction in 30% CF/PAA is larger than 20% CF/PAA. Furthermore, an innovative method was developed to calculate the fiber content in carbon fiber reinforced composites by burning off the neat resin and sample in a tube furnace. This method was proved to be accurate (within 1.5 wt. % deviation) by using burning off data obtained from CF/Epoxy and CF/Vinyl Ester samples. 20% and 30% carbon/PAA samples were burned off and carbon fiber content was obtained using this method. The results of the present study will be helpful in determining the end-user applications of these composite materials.

Book excerpt: This, the second special topical conference on the properties of Non-Metallic Materials at Low Temperatures, was sponsored by the International Cryogenic Materials Conference Board. The potential for plastics materials in the field of cryogenics is vast and as yet only partly explored. In addition, many other materials, which qualify for the title non-metallic but are not 'plastics', have numerous possible outlets in low temperature technology. This conference aimed at providing a forum, whereby specialists from Industry, the Universities and from Government sponsored Institutions could assemble to discuss the extent of our current knowledge. As it transpired, the meeting was also to high light the considerable gaps that still exist in our fundamental understanding of the low temperature behaviour of these materials. On this theme, during the course of the conference, a reference was made to an almost forgotten quotation by Lord Kelvin, who said: "When you cannot measure what you are speaking about, when you cannot express in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the stage of a science, whatever the matter be." This simple statement sums up the aims, objectives and hopefully the achievements of this conference. To discuss and disseminate the current knowledge on non-metallic materials in order that realistic predictions of in-service performance may be made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a review of the science and technology of the element carbon and its allotropes: graphite, diamond and the fullerenes. This field has expanded greatly in the last three decades stimulated by many major discoveries such as carbon fibers, low-pressure diamond, and the fullerenes. The need for such a book has been felt for some time. These carbon materials are very different in structure and properties. Some are very old (charcoal), others brand new (the fullerenes). They have different applications and markets and are produced by different segments of the industry.Few studies are available that attempt to review the entire field of carbon as a whole discipline. Moreover these studies were written several decades ago and a generally outdated since the development of the technology is moving very rapidly and scope of applications is constantly expanding and reaching into new fields such as aerospace, automotive, semiconductors, optics, and electronics. In this book the author provides a valuable, up-to-date account of both the newer and traditional forms of carbon, both naturally occurring and man-made. This volume will be a valuable resource for both specialists in, and occasional users of carbon materials.
