Book Synopsis A Middle English Syntax by : Tauno F. Mustanoja
Download or read book A Middle English Syntax written by Tauno F. Mustanoja and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a good orientation into the history of English grammar, several books are indispensable. One of those is Mustanoja’s A Middle English Syntax. However, for a long time this work was not readily available; the present edition changes that. This is a fac simile reprint from the 1960 publication which appeared as volume XXIII in ‘Mémoires de la Société Néophilologique de Helsinki’, with a new Introduction by Elly van Gelderen. Compared to Old English, Middle English has fewer grammars and textbooks devoted to it. This book provides an interesting supplement by going deeper into certain questions and, especially, into exceptions. The book points out differences with Old English and certain peculiarities of the Middle English system. It was originally written for students of Middle English literature but serves a linguist well in detailed descriptions of the parts of speech, the use of the various cases, gender, and number. Word order, complex sentences, and conjunctions were meant to be dealt with in a second volume, which was never published.
Book Synopsis Lessons on the Noun Phrase in English by : Walter Hirtle
Download or read book Lessons on the Noun Phrase in English written by Walter Hirtle and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguishing the components that make up the meaning of a noun enables us to understand what permits us to say "Ground temperature plus one degrees," or to invent "small is beautiful." A careful look at the meaning and role of -'s and of words like a/the, any/some, this/that, often found in noun phrases, reveals how they refer to the speaker's message. Examining pronouns pin-points the fundamental role of the representation of a grammatical person in all noun phrases.

Download or read book Explanation and Linguistic Change written by Willem F. Koopman and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the outcome of a workshop, held in Amsterdam in 1985, on the nature, even possibility, of explanation in Historical Linguistics: why changes take place and others do not, and why they occur at a particular time and place. The workshop, and this volume, aim to explore questions such as i) are the factors which explain the actuation of a change different from those that explain its implementation?; ii) is it possible to give a typology of changes?; iii) should linguistic explanation hope to meet the same requirements as explanation in the pure sciences?; iv) are all linguistic changes necessarily the product of variation?; v) should there be a formal theory of change apart from a general thoery of grammar?
