Book Synopsis Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition by : Roland N. Pittman
Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Synopsis The Design of Mammals by : John William Prothero
Download or read book The Design of Mammals written by John William Prothero and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite an astonishing 100 million-fold range in adult body mass from bumblebee bat to blue whale, all mammals are formed of the same kinds of molecules, cells, tissues and organs and to the same overall body plan. A scaling approach investigates the principles of mammal design by examining the ways in which mammals of diverse size and taxonomy are quantitatively comparable. This book presents an extensive reanalysis of scaling data collected over a quarter of a century, including many rarely or never-cited sources. The result is an unparalleled contribution to understanding scaling in mammals, addressing a uniquely extensive range of mammal attributes and using substantially larger and more rigorously screened samples than in any prior works. An invaluable resource for all those interested in the 'design' of mammals, this is an ideal resource for postgraduates and researchers in a range of fields from comparative physiology to ecology.
Book Synopsis The Pathway for Oxygen by : Ewald R. Weibel
Download or read book The Pathway for Oxygen written by Ewald R. Weibel and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare indeed for one book to be both a first-rate classroom text and a major contribution to scholarship. The Pathway for Oxygen is such a book, offering a new approach to respiratory physiology and morphology that quantitatively links the two. Professionalism in science has led to a compartmentalization of biology. Function is the domain of the physiologist, structure that of the morphologist, and they often operate with vastly disparate concepts and procedures. Yet the performance of the respiratory system depends both on structural and on functional properties that cannot be separated. The first chapter of The Pathway for Oxygen engages the student with the design and function of the vertebrate respiratory organs from a comparative viewpoint. The second chapter adds to that foundation the link between cell energetics and oxygen needs of the whole animal. With Chapter 3 the excitement begins--new ideas, fresh attacks on old problems, and a fuller account of the power of the quantitative approach Dr. Weibel has pioneered. The Pathway for Oxygen will be read eagerly by medical students, graduate students, advanced undergraduates in zoology--and by their professors.
Book Synopsis Principles of Metabolic Control in Mammalian Systems by : Herman
Download or read book Principles of Metabolic Control in Mammalian Systems written by Herman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we present the basic principles of metabolic control which we hope will serve as a foundation for the vast array of factual matter which the biochemist and the physician engaged in metabolic research must accumulate. Accordingly, we attempt to set forth these principles, along with sufficient explanation, so that the reader may apply them to the ever-expanding literature of biochemistry. If we are successful, this will provide a theoretical approach which can be applied to any given set of metabolic reactions. It is impossible to enumerate each and every biochemical reaction and pathway since such a work would be too unwieldy for efficient use. Rather, we hope our presentation of the principles of metabolic control will be sufficiently basic to be of lasting usefulness no matter how detailed biochemistry may become. We would like to be able to con dense biochemistry into a theoretical biology that will not only allow for the general treatment of any given reaction but will enable predic tions to be made as to the existence of necessary pathways and the con sequences of altered control. Such is not possible today, but this may be accomplished in the future. We believe it is now possible to institute the beginnings of such a theoretical biology.

Book Synopsis Mammalian Vestibular Physiology by : V. J. Wilson
Download or read book Mammalian Vestibular Physiology written by V. J. Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easy to underrate the importance of a sensory system whose receptor is buried deep within the skull and of whose performance we are usually not aware. It is only when it malfunctions that we know we have a ves tibular system! Unraveling the mechanisms by which activation of the vestibular labyrinth exerts its varied effects presents a great challenge, which increasing numbers of investigators are rushing to meet. At this time a period of transition appears to have been reached. On the one hand, physiological and anatomical techniques have provided extensive information about the properties of the receptor and of some of the path ways that link it to the musculature. On the other hand, extensive be havioral and psychophysical studies provide different insights into the mechanisms involved in vestibular reflexes. Until recently there has been relatively 1ittle interaction between the practitioners of these two widely different approaches. It has been our goal to assess and describe the progress that has been made in both areas and, when possible, to make a synthesis of the results. As will be seen, numerous questions are raised in the process, and we hope that they will help in pointing the way to further investigations. We are grateful to the authors and publishers who gave permission to reproduce many of the figures, and to our colleagues who have read and commented on all or part of the manuscript. Victor J.

Book Synopsis Mammalian Reproductive Biology by : F. H. Bronson
Download or read book Mammalian Reproductive Biology written by F. H. Bronson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique interdisciplinary overview of the way mammals reproduce, this volume synthesizes research done by laboratory physiologists, behaviorists, population ecologists, and animal breeders. F. H. Bronson has drawn together the disparate literature in these areas to provide students and researchers with a comprehensive and biologically integrated approach to the study of mammalian reproduction. Each chapter presents a wealth of issues and questions, summarizing the current consensus on interpretations as well as viable alternatives under debate. The book is principally concerned with how environmental factors regulate reproduction. Bronson proposes that a mammal's reproductive performance routinely reflects simultaneous regulation by several environmental factors that interact in fascinatingly complex ways. Environment is defined broadly, and the chapters give equal weight to ecological and physiological factors when considering how variables such as food availability, ambient temperature, photoperiod, and social cues interact to regulate a mammal's reproduction. Particular attention is given to seasonal breeding, and a taxonomically arranged chapter underscores the importance of comparative and evolutionary biology to an understanding of mammalian reproduction. Mammalian Reproductive Biology is a powerful argument for the value and importance of interdisciplinary approaches to research. Its almost 1,500 references constitute the most comprehensive bibliography to date on this topic. Bronson also gives detailed consideration to promising areas for future research. Well organized, carefully planned, and clearly written, this book will become standard reading for scientists concerned with any aspect of mammalian biology.
