Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you’re first and best at everything — except losing your first tooth? A sweet, relatable story about comparing yourself to others, losing teeth, and the value of good friends. Josie is the monkey-bars champion, the first one to read a whole book by herself, and the second-fastest runner in her class. But she’s the worst at losing teeth —the only kid in her class who still has all her baby teeth! One night, Josie finally feels a tooth wiggle, just a little, and she can’t wait to show her best friend, Richard. But nothing makes the tooth fall out — not hanging upside down, chomping on an apple, or even pulling on the tooth with a string — until Josie trips and goes splat and the tooth is lost for good. Now what can she leave under her pillow for the tooth fairy?

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of 2017 "[Teeth is] . . . more than an exploration of a two-tiered system—it is a call for sweeping, radical change." —New York Times Book Review "Show me your teeth," the great naturalist Georges Cuvier is credited with saying, "and I will tell you who you are." In this shattering new work, veteran health journalist Mary Otto looks inside America's mouth, revealing unsettling truths about our unequal society. Teeth takes readers on a disturbing journey into America's silent epidemic of oral disease, exposing the hidden connections between tooth decay and stunted job prospects, low educational achievement, social mobility, and the troubling state of our public health. Otto's subjects include the pioneering dentist who made Shirley Temple and Judy Garland's teeth sparkle on the silver screen and helped create the all-American image of "pearly whites"; Deamonte Driver, the young Maryland boy whose tragic death from an abscessed tooth sparked congressional hearings; and a marketing guru who offers advice to dentists on how to push new and expensive treatments and how to keep Medicaid patients at bay. In one of its most disturbing findings, Teeth reveals that toothaches are not an occasional inconvenience, but rather a chronic reality for millions of people, including disproportionate numbers of the elderly and people of color. Many people, Otto reveals, resort to prayer to counteract the uniquely devastating effects of dental pain. Otto also goes back in time to understand the roots of our predicament in the history of dentistry, showing how it became separated from mainstream medicine, despite a century of growing evidence that oral health and general bodily health are closely related. Muckraking and paradigm-shifting, Teeth exposes for the first time the extent and meaning of our oral health crisis. It joins the small shelf of books that change the way we view society and ourselves—and will spark an urgent conversation about why our teeth matter.

Do not assume content reflects current scientific knowledge, policies, or practices.... From the PREFACE. The want of a concise and familiar Treatise on the Teeth, containing information which may be useful to all those who have lost many of them, suggested the idea of this essay. There is respecting the Teeth a degree of delicacy generally felt which prevents advice being given even where requisite, and this frequently occurs among intimate friends: in such cases, a recommendation to read this Treatise may lead to the most beneficial results. The Author would impress upon all who read, or in any way profit by this work, that it would be an act of kindness to present it to any friend who may require the aid of a Dentist.

Readers will find detailed information on the epidemiology of individual diseases and disorders and on hot topics and methods in oral health research. The extensive first part of the book explores the international epidemiological literature regarding a wide range of conditions, from dental caries and periodontal diseases to halitosis and malocclusions. In each case, the prevalence, disease-specific measures, and associated factors are identified. Attention is then focused on cutting-edge research topics in oral epidemiology, such as the intriguing mechanisms linking oral diseases and chronic general diseases, life course epidemiology, and the role of socioeconomic determinants of oral health. The final part of the book is devoted to description of the epidemiological methods and tools applied in the field of oral health. Here, the coverage includes validation of questionnaires, data collection and data analyses, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my desire that the individuals who read this book will go on a journey of self-discovery just like I did. This book is designed for us to understand that our teeth are more important than we realize and that having healthy teeth is the first step toward good health. Discrimination is the end result of prejudice, racism, and the wielding power of the world’s institutions. By institutions, I am referring to those giant buildings that seem to have heavy metal doors that are normally locked from the inside. The keeper of the keys is the system that has been set in place by the institution that allows one group to enter and, by the same token, locks other groups out. Behind the heavy metal doors is a picture on the wall with a perfect smile on it. And if your teeth are straight, white, perfect, and are all present, you will hear a big clinging sound. The dead bolt will slide to the left, and the door will open wide for you. It really does not matter what race you are. Anyone who has this perfect smile is granted the rite of passage in which the criteria have changed over the years. When I set out to write this book, my thoughts were with individuals who were suffering shame and others who were struggling with the plight of missing teeth. If we do not make our teeth a priority in our youth, they will not be around to serve us in our old age. Hopefully, parents reading this book can give their children a better start. My desire is that in the future, after reading this book, we will be more inclined to have compassion and understanding with individuals who are struggling with their dental issues.
