Now, world-class literary writers introduce the book of the King James Bible in a series of beautifully designed, small-format volumes. The introducers' passionate, provocative, and personal engagements with the spirituality and the language of the text make the Bible come alive as a stunning work of literature and remind us of its overwhelming contemporary relevance.
Book Synopsis The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew by : Alexander Roberts
Download or read book The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew written by Alexander Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the MSS. attribute this book to Matthew, though the titles vary much. The letters prefixed, professing to be written to and by St. Jerome, exist in several of the MSS.; but no one who is acquainted with the style of Jerome's letters will think this one authentic. There are, however, in his works many allusions to some of the legends mentioned in this book. Chapter i.-xxiv. were edited by Thilo, chapters xxv. to the end are edited for the first time by Tischendorf. It is not very clear whether the Latin be original, or a direct translation from the Greek. In most part it seems to be original. The list of epithets, however, applied to the triangles of the Alpha in chapter xxxi. are pretty obviously mistranslations of Greek technical terms, which it might not be difficult to reproduce.

Book Synopsis The Origins of Christmas by : Joseph F. Kelly
Download or read book The Origins of Christmas written by Joseph F. Kelly and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When was Christmas first celebrated? How did December 25 become the date for the feast? How did the Bible’s “magi from the East” become three kings named Melchior, Caspar, and Balthasar who rode camels from three different continents to worship the newborn Christ? How did the Feast of the Nativity generate an entire liturgical season from Advent to Candlemas? Why did medieval and Renaissance artists portray Joseph as an old man? When did the first Christmas music appear? And who was the real Saint Nicholas? These and many other questions are answered in this revised and expanded edition of The Origins of Christmas. The story of the origins of Christmas is not well known, but it is a fascinating tale. It begins when the first Christians had little interest in Christ’s Nativity, and it finishes when Christmas had become an integral part of Christian life and Western culture. The Origins of Christmas covers a variety of topics in a concise and accessible style, and is suitable for group discussions.

Book Synopsis Joy Born At Bethlehem: 19 Christmas Sermons from the Ministry of Charles Spurgeon by : Charles Spurgeon
Download or read book Joy Born At Bethlehem: 19 Christmas Sermons from the Ministry of Charles Spurgeon written by Charles Spurgeon and published by Primedia E-launch LLC. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers,” was very mindful of the need to avoid seeing Christmas as a merely religious holiday, open to commercialization and frivolity. Accordingly, throughout most of his extensive ministry he refused to alter his teaching schedule to fit in a “Christmas” sermon, as is so common today. Looking through Spurgeon’s vast teaching archive, we find only 19 instances in which special attention was given to the topic of Christmas. Spurgeon’s focus in these 19 sermons is overwhelmingly the who and why of Christmas. He marveled at the fact that God would send his only Son into the world for people who in no way deserved it. Christ came into the world to save sinners. That was Spurgeon’s focus 150 years ago. We need that message now more than ever. Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
