Book excerpt: The Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional flow are linearized around a dominant uniform stream velocity. The concept of field modes in fluid mechanics is then applied to the often-treated and well-known problem of viscous incompressible flow over a semi-infinite flat plate fixed in an unbounded uniform stream. One of the results that emerges from this novel treatment of an old problem is that the usual notion of a displacement thickness leads naturally to a displacement boundary beyond which the streamlines of the viscous flow past the flat plate are indistinguishable from the streamlines due to potential flow past this boundary. Roy who has joined me as coauthors of this text, a credit which would have been given earlier to them as they were helping in a latent way in the evolution of the book for the past five years. Five years have elapsed on the intellectual journey of writing a PhD thesis e-book in title “Hall Effect on the Magnetohydrodynamic Flow of Some Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Conducting Fluids” in subject of physics. As Magnetohydrodynamic Flow is growing at a dazzling pace, this edition has been demanding in a different way. In this 1st edition, the book has been thoroughly described, enlarged and updated with Magnetohydrodynamic Flow. Gratitude is expressed to the students and teachers, both from India and abroad, who have sent in their valuable suggestions which have been given due consideration. We are sincerely thankful to our publisher, Newredmars Education. We are also deeply indebted to my guide Prof. Dr. G. S. Roy for his sustained support of this endeavour from its inception; his wisdom has made all the difference. Healthy criticism and suggestions for further improvement of the book are solicited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics of general laminar flows around the edge of a semi-infinite flat plate are investigated on the basis of the complete NavierStokes equations. The solution of this singular and nonlinear problem is obtained in an exact and linear manner in the form of a double series around the edge. It permits a rigorous discussion of the properties of flows around an edge, which are of importance in the practical applications as well as in the theory of viscous and nonviscous fluid motions. In particular, it becomes possible to check the reliability of the Kutta condition which represents a fundamental proposition in ideal flow theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book discusses the latest progresses and developments on complex systems research and intends to give an exposure to prospective readers about the theoretical and practical aspects of mathematical modelling, numerical simulation and agent-based modelling frameworks. The main purpose of this book is to emphasize a unified approach to complex systems analysis, which goes beyond to examine complicated phenomena of numerous real-life systems; this is done by investigating a huge number of components that interact with each other at different (microscopic and macroscopic) scales; new insights and emergent collective behaviours can evolve from the interactions between individual components and also with their environments. These tools and concepts permit us to better understand the patterns of various real-life systems and help us to comprehend the mechanisms behind which distinct factors shaping some complex systems phenomena being influenced. This book is published in conjunction with the International Workshop on Complex Systems Modelling & Simulation 2019 (CoSMoS 2019): IoT & Big Data Integration. This international event was held at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Main Campus, Penang, Malaysia, from 8 to 11 April 2019. This book appeals to readers interested in complex systems research and other related areas such as mathematical modelling, numerical simulation and agent-based modelling frameworks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION TO CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER A highly practical intro to solving real-world convective heat transfer problems with MATLAB® and MAPLE In Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer, accomplished professor and mechanical engineer Nevzat Onur delivers an insightful exploration of the physical mechanisms of convective heat transfer and an accessible treatment of how to build mathematical models of these physical processes. Providing a new perspective on convective heat transfer, the book is comprised of twelve chapters, all of which contain numerous practical examples. The book emphasizes foundational concepts and is integrated with explanations of computational programs like MATLAB® and MAPLE to offer students a practical outlet for the concepts discussed within. The focus throughout is on practical, physical analysis rather than mathematical detail, which helps students learn to use the provided computational tools quickly and accurately. In addition to a solutions manual for instructors and the aforementioned MAPLE and MATLAB® files, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer includes: A thorough introduction to the foundations of convective heat transfer, including coordinate systems, and continuum and thermodynamic equilibrium concepts Practical explorations of the fundamental equations of laminar convective heat transfer, including integral formulation and differential formulation Comprehensive discussions of the equations of incompressible external laminar boundary layers, including laminar flow forced convection and the thermal boundary layer concept In-depth examinations of dimensional analysis, including the dimensions of physical quantities, dimensional homogeneity, and dimensionless numbers Ideal for first-year graduates in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer is also an indispensable resource for practicing engineers in academia and industry in the mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous mathematical constants include the ratio of circular circumference to diameter, π = 3.14 ..., and the natural logarithm base, e = 2.718 .... Students and professionals can often name a few others, but there are many more buried in the literature and awaiting discovery. How do such constants arise, and why are they important? Here the author renews the search he began in his book Mathematical Constants, adding another 133 essays that broaden the landscape. Topics include the minimality of soap film surfaces, prime numbers, elliptic curves and modular forms, Poisson-Voronoi tessellations, random triangles, Brownian motion, uncertainty inequalities, Prandtl-Blasius flow (from fluid dynamics), Lyapunov exponents, knots and tangles, continued fractions, Galton-Watson trees, electrical capacitance (from potential theory), Zermelo's navigation problem, and the optimal control of a pendulum. Unsolved problems appear virtually everywhere as well. This volume continues an outstanding scholarly attempt to bring together all significant mathematical constants in one place.

Book excerpt: Interest in studying the phenomena of convective heat and mass transfer between an ambient fluid and a body which is immersed in it stems both from fundamental considerations, such as the development of better insights into the nature of the underlying physical processes which take place, and from practical considerations, such as the fact that these idealised configurations serve as a launching pad for modelling the analogous transfer processes in more realistic physical systems. Such idealised geometries also provide a test ground for checking the validity of theoretical analyses. Consequently, an immense research effort has been expended in exploring and understanding the convective heat and mass transfer processes between a fluid and submerged objects of various shapes. Among several geometries which have received considerable attention are plates, circular and elliptical cylinders, and spheres, although much information is also available for some other bodies, such as corrugated surfaces or bodies of relatively complicated shapes. The book is a unified progress report which captures the spirit of the work in progress in boundary-layer heat transfer research and also identifies potential difficulties and areas for further study. In addition, this work provides new material on convective heat and mass transfer, as well as a fresh look at basic methods in heat transfer. Extensive references are included in order to stimulate further studies of the problems considered. A state-of-the-art picture of boundary-layer heat transfer today is presented by listing and commenting also upon the most recent successful efforts and identifying the needs for further research.
