Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Jewish intellectual asked the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe: Would Chabad philosophy be helpful to an academically-inclined person, estranged from Judaism, who wanted to learn about his heritage? This free translation of the Rebbe's response probes deeply into the scope and significance of Chabad while emphasizing the importance of simplicity and sincerity in the performance of mitzvot. An essay on the general nature of Chabad Chasidic teachings and their impact on Jewish life and thought. The Rebbe explains that it is a "divine philosophy that opens the portals of wisdom and understanding" to the knowledge of G-d, indicating the path for every individual according to his capabilities. Discussing the importance of studying the inner, esoteric aspects of Torah, this essay demonstrates conclusively that anyone, regardless of background or "natural" intellectual faculties, can comprehend and benefit immeasurably from Chabad Chasidic philosophy. Includes fascinating facts of early Chabad-Lubavitch history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1941 and 1945, the years of cataclysm for European Jewry, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe published a remarkable monthly journal entitled Hakeriah Vehakedusha Reading and Holiness. A collection of discourses from this journal is published here for the first time in English translation. Many of the discourses have as their central theme the concepts of self-sacrifice for G-d and the Jewish people, repentance and strengthening the observance of Torah and Mitzvot. The Rebbe often speaks of the lessons to be learned from the earth-shattering events of that time and their connection to the coming of Mashiach. They were written for a broad audience and are accessible even to those who have never studied Chasidic philosophy. The two volumes include explanatory footnotes, a glossary of Hebrew terms, a general index and, in the second volume, an index of quotations and references for Volumes 1 and 2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminal work of Chabad Chasidic philosophy is considered to be the "last will and testament" of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. The discourse was released for the 10th of Shevat in the year 5710 (1950); on that day Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak passed away. Chasidim customarily study Basi LeGani each year in honor of the yahrzeit, and each year his successor, the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, explained another of its chapters in depth. The Rebbe's exposition of Basi LeGani, the first Chasidic discourse he spoke upon assuming the mantle of leadership in 5711 (1951), was also a declaration of his own mission and goals. This widely acclaimed English edition will enable many more Jews to participate in the study of this important work.

Book excerpt: Distilling the teachings and thought of Rabbi Simha Bunim, one of the foremost figures in the Przysucha school of Hasidism, this study sheds light both on what students of the Pryzsucha tradition believed as well as on its influence on Polish Hasidism at large. Pryzsucha Hasidism believed in a service to God that demanded both passion and analytical study, and sought to understand the human being, rather than God himself. This exploration of Rabbi Bunim's thought illustrates how the spiritual leader was able to transform Przysucha Hasidism into a genuine movement and, in doing so, become the dominant personality in the Hasidic community in Poland during the early part of the 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essay that forms the core of this book is an attempt to understand the developments that have occurred in Orthodox Jewry in America in the last seventy years, and to analyse their implications. The prime change is what is often described as ‘the swing to the right’, a marked increase in ritual stringency, a rupture in patterns of behaviour that has had major consequences not only for Jewish society but also for the nature of Jewish spirituality. For Haym Soloveitchik, the key feature at the root of this change is that, as a result of migration to the ‘New Worlds’ of England, the US, and Israel and acculturation to its new surroundings, American Jewry—indeed, much of the Jewish world— had to reconstruct religious practice from normative texts: observance could no longer be transmitted mimetically, on the basis of practices observed in home and street. In consequence, behaviour once governed by habit is now governed by rule. This new edition allows the author to deal with criticisms raised since the essay, long established as a classic in the field, was originally published, and enables readers to gain a fuller perspective on a topic central to today’s Jewish world and its development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sefer Yetzirah (the "Book of Creation"), one of the earliest Kabbalistic works, teaches that the letters of the Hebrew alphabet are the building blocks of creation. Each letter has its own significance, spiritual energy, and reason for existing. In this revised version of Rabbi Ginsburgh's best-selling The Alef-Beit, Jewish Thought Revealed Through the Hebrew Letters, he explains how each letter's name, form, and numerical value play a role in the creative process of the cosmos. He draws on the understandings of the well-known mystic, the Baal Shem Tov, in depicting how each letter has nine dimensions, with impact in three worlds--the physical, spiritual, and Divine. In every letter there is the true completion of the soul, a chance to unite consciousness with the code of creation. Includes glossary, footnotes, and index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hasidism Incarnate contends that much of modern Judaism in the West developed in reaction to Christianity and in defense of Judaism as a unique tradition. Ironically enough, this occurred even as modern Judaism increasingly dovetailed with Christianity with regard to its ethos, aesthetics, and attitude toward ritual and faith. Shaul Magid argues that the Hasidic movement in Eastern Europe constitutes an alternative "modernity," one that opens a new window on Jewish theological history. Unlike Judaism in German lands, Hasidism did not develop under a "Christian gaze" and had no need to be apologetic of its positions. Unburdened by an apologetic agenda (at least toward Christianity), it offered a particular reading of medieval Jewish Kabbalah filtered through a focus on the charismatic leader that resulted in a religious worldview that has much in common with Christianity. It is not that Hasidic masters knew about Christianity; rather, the basic tenets of Christianity remained present, albeit often in veiled form, in much kabbalistic teaching that Hasidism took up in its portrayal of the charismatic figure of the zaddik, whom it often described in supernatural terms.
