Book excerpt: This project describes development and problem solving efforts to realise a viable portable sensor for arsenic, applicable to drinking water. The work is the first dedicated effort towards this goal, after the preliminary investigations previously conducted at Cranfield University (Cooper, 2004 and Noh, 2005). Using polymeric gold ink BQ331 (DuPont Microcircuit Materials, Bristol, UK) as working electrode on screen printed strips, the electrochemical procedure was studied. Due to the wealth of research on electrochemical and non electrochemical methods for arsenic determination, this project attempts to capitalise on the unique advantages of the screen-printed gold surface. In particular, the issues surrounding the performance of the sensor were evaluated by electrochemical and spectroscopic means (including infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). A number of custom screen printed electrodes were prepared in house comparing sensor performance on compositional factors. An interference coming from silver interaction with chloride in the reference electrode was identified. As such, the design of the sensor needs to change to include either an immobilising layer, such as Nafion, over the silver, or to omit screen-printed silver altogether. The Nafion was presumed to work by excluding (or at least much reducing) the passage of negatively charged chloride ions to the silver surface preventing formation of soluble silver chloride complexes. The design of the sensor was considered in light of performance and sensitivity. The screen-printed electrodes were cut to facilitate a microband design lending favourable diffusive to capacitive current characteristics. With this design, As(III) detection was demonstrated comfortably at 5 ppb (in a copper tolerant 4 M HCl electrolyte) without electrode need for additional preparation procedures. This is below the World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulation level of 10 ppb in drinking water. The electrode materials are already mass manufacturable at an estimated cost less than £0.5 per electrode. The microband design could, in principle, be applied to mercury and other metal ions. The procedure for As(V) either with chemical or electrochemical reduction and determination still needs to be assessed. However, the presented electrode system offers a viable alternative to the colorimetric test kits presently employed around the world for arsenic in drinking water. Also, the Nicholson Method (Nicholson, 1965a), used for characterising electron transfer kinetics at electrode surfaces, was extended for application to rough surfaces using a fractal parameter introduced by Nyikos and Pajkossy (1988). This work includes mathematical derivation and numerical evaluation and gives a number of predictions for electrochemical behaviour. These predictions could not be tested experimentally, as yet, since the physical conditions must be carefully controlled.

Book excerpt: This collection of research papers, presented at meetings organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT), concerns a variety of issues relating to the area of sustainable development. WIT has a long and very successful record of organising conferences on the topic of sustainability, which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Any sustainable solutions that are derived solely from the perspective of a single discipline may have unintended damaging consequences that create new problems. Thus effective sustainable solutions require the collaboration of scientists and engineers from various disciplines, as well as planners, architects, environmentalists, policy makers, social scientists, and economists. The contents of this book reflect that interdisciplinary approach, and include topics under the main areas of: Sustainable development and planning; Disaster management; Air pollution; Urban transport; Ecosystems and Water resources management.

Book excerpt: The extraordinary quantity of material included in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry can make it extremely difficult to find a specific compound using only a general un derstanding of the basic rules for the arrangement of the subject matter (the so-called "System ofthe Last Position"). Consequently, subject indexes have been provided for the past few years to individual Handbook volumes, covering only a single section, or in some cases, a complete system number. During this period a comprehensive subject index-the Gmelin Index-was being prepared, whose first volume is now available. The broad distribution and extensive utilization enjoyed by the Gmelin Handbook in Eng lish-speaking countries has led to a decision to publish the Gmelin Index in the English lan guage. This decision was partly based on the fact that since the English language today oc cupies a preeminent position in the field of chemistry, a German-speaking user could utilize an English text much more readily than would be the case for an English-speaking user and a German text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater resources naturally contain high levels of arsenic in many parts of the world. Over the last two decades, the As-containing groundwater in South-East Asia has received much attention, but the situation is just as crucial in Latin America, where the number of studies is still relatively low, and the extent and severity of As-exposure in the populations has yet to be fully evaluated. This book aims to promote knowledge of the occurrence and genesis of As-rich groundwater in Latin America. It deals with constraints on the mobility of As in groundwater, As-uptake from soil and water by plants, As-propagation through the food chain, human health impacts, and As-removal technologies. Case studies are presented from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru, amongst others, and are viewed against the background of experience from other world regions. The book is a state-of-art overview of arsenic research in Latin America. It aims to create interest within the Latin American countries affected by the presence of arseniferous aquifers and to increase awareness among administrators, policy makers and company executives. It will also serve to inform the international scientific community, and improve international cooperation on arsenic in groundwater.

Book excerpt: Arsenic in Plants Comprehensive resource detailing the chemistry, toxicity and impact of arsenic in plants, and solutions to the problem Arsenic in Plants: Uptake, Consequences and Remediation Techniques provides comprehensive coverage of the subject, detailing arsenic in our environment, the usage of arsenicals in crop fields, phytotoxicity of arsenic and arsenic’s impact on the morphology, anatomy and quantitative and qualitative traits of different plant groups, including their physiology and biochemistry. The work emphasizes the occurrence of arsenic, its speciation and transportation in plants, and differences in mechanisms of tolerance in hyper-accumulator and non-accumulator plants. Throughout the text, the highly qualified authors delve into every facet of the interaction of arsenic with plants, including the ionomics, genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics in relation to arsenic toxicity, impact of exogenous phytohormones and growth-regulating substances, management of arsenic contamination in the soil-plant continuum, phytoremediation of arsenic toxicity and physical removal of arsenic from water. General discussion has also been included on subjects such as the ways through which this metalloid affects plant and human systems. Topics covered include: Introduction and historical background of arsenic and the mechanism of arsenic transport and metabolism in plants Arsenic-induced responses in plants, including impact on biochemical processes and different plant groups, from cyanobacteria to higher plants The role of phytohormones, mineral nutrients, metabolites and signaling molecules in regulating arsenic-induced toxicity in plants Genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, ionomic and transcriptional regulation during arsenic stress Strategies to reduce the arsenic contamination in soil-plant systems and arsenic removal by phytoremediation techniques Researchers, academics, and students of plant physiology, biotechnology, and agriculture will find valuable information in Arsenic in Plants to understand this pressing subject in full, along with its implications and how we can adapt our strategies and behaviors to promote reduced contamination through practical applications.
