Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Drainage of Lands, Towns, and Buildings The flat stone drains shown in Figs. 45 and 47 are economical forms of construction in some localities, namely, where the required slabs are cheap and abundant. The shoulders, shown in Fig. 47 as being left in the soil, may be in some cases better substituted by clearing the drain out level, and introducing two slabs of stone, meeting at the bottom, and having a stone wedged in between them at the top, the upper portion being filled in with loose stones. If the flat stones at the sides can be obtained 6 or 8 inches broad, and 15 inches thick, at about 4d. Per ton, an acre of land may be drained with drains 32 inches deep below the crowns of the gathered-up ridges, and laid at distances of r 5 feet, at a cost of about £2 1zs., exclusive of carriage of materials, and the ploughing by which the upper ridges are formed. Constructed as in Fig. 47, if the covering flags can be procured 12 inches wide and 2 inches thick, at the same rate per ton, the acre may be similarly drained for 8s. Or os. Less. For the draining of bogs, the arrangement represented in Fig. 49 is peculiarly applicable, all the materials being on the spot, as the whole drain is refilled with the peat itself, which is well known to resist the action of water with impunity. Provided the cutting of the drains be done in summer, when the material quickly becomes dried, and sufficient time is allowed between the successive opera tions cf cutting and refilling to effect the required con solidation, no better method is yet devised for effecting this kind of work. The liability of the mess in the bed of the drain to subside in detached parts, and with great irregularity, is certain to destroy any arrangement of tiles, pipes, or other artificial materials. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rudimentary Treatise on the Drainage of Towns and Buildings: Suggestive of Sanatory Regulations Conducive to the Health of an Increasing Population Two volumes of the Rudimentary Series - "The Art of Draining Districts and Lands, and the work now submitted to the reader - relate to the subject of drainage generally, with water supply as an auxiliary or necessary contingent: the removal of surplus waters and refuse on the one hand, and the supply of pure water on the other. The one volume applies to Districts and Lands; the other to Towns and Buildings. It becomes necessary to remark in this (the Third) Edition of the present work, that when the late Mr. Dempsey prepared the First and Second Editions, the whole subject of the Drainage of the Metropolis was in confusion. The most eminent engineers were in conflict as to the best mode of attaining the desired end. The plan eventually adopted, and now (1865) in progress, differs from that which Mr. Dempsey and many other engineers recommended. This, of course, is not conclusive as to the relative merits of the different schemes. Who were right and who were wrong, in these speculations, we shall not know for many years to come; until the Intercepting Main Drainage plan shall have had a fair trial by long-continued working. On this account it seems desirable to leave Mr. Dempsey's calculations and deductions in their original form; because they embody, or rather illustrate, one particular principle of Drainage, which may probably apply to many other large towns, irrespective of its adoption or rejection in the metropolis. By greatly enlarging the Appendix, space has been found for a succinct account of all that has been done in relation to the Main Drainage Scheme since the publication of the Second Edition of this volume, in 1854. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examinations for the Drainage of Lands It is not the province of this report to enter into the question of the desirability or value of drainage, as this is in ever case a matter of estimate and opinion, while land values, either rec aimed or unreclaimed, are Seldom alike in two localities. It may be broadly stated, however, that aside from the reclaimed swamp land near cities, the value of which can not be computed, it is well known, as stated by Professor Shaler, that for farming purposes reclaimed swamps furnish by far a greater store of available plant food than any other class of land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Drainage This book deals with the subject of drainage primarily from the agricultural standpoint, and the subject has been developed largely as a matter of applied soil-physics. Drainage is considered herein as a means of reclaiming additional areas and of making wet lands more productive. Reclamation of arid and wet lands affords the chief means of increasing our food producing areas and drawing a greater proportion of our population into the rural districts. The present volume is intended, first, as a text book for students of general agriculture or agricultural engineering; second, as a reference book for practical farmers; and third, as an aid to owners of wet, overflowed, marsh, swamp or alkaline land who desire to improve their holdings. The information presented herein has been gathered by the authors, as farmers, students and instructors, in the Corn Belt States and later in the West, where preliminary feasibility surveys and selection of lands for irrigation projects and drainage projects have been an important feature of our work. Review questions, general references and laboratory exercises have been included to help make up the kind of a book that has seemed to the writers to be needed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Drainage in New York Some of the most misleading soil in reference to wetness is found in the hill lands of southern New York. Much of that land has a good slope and sometimes it is almost precipitous. The slope would seem to insure good drainage but the structure of the soil is such that good drainage does not. Exist. Much of the land has a moderately porous soil underlain by an impervious or hardpan subsoil. The rainfall is absorbed into this loose top soil and trapped by the subsoil so that it is removed only by slow percolation and by evaporation. In addition springs are of com mon occurrence and spread down the slope in the form of a fan of wet soil. Many other special types of wet soil occur but. The above covers those that are most frequently met. Indications of wet soil are heaving in winter, failure of seed to germinate, bare patches or missing trees, pale green leaves, slow and stunted growth of crops and either a black or a pale, washed-out mottled color of the soil. Also the tendency to puddle and become lumpy under till age are further evidences of wetness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drainage of Habitable Buildings IN the early part of the year 1881, I was employed to write for the Plumber and Decorator, and Journal of Gas and Sanitary Engineering, a series of articles which now comprise this work; and in writing upon such a subject as Habitable Buildings, I elected to touch, but briefly, upon what has been done in such an insanitary manner in the past, and to point out mainly what should be done to render a dwelling thoroughly sanitary as regards its drainage arrangements. The title therefore of The Drain age of Habitable Buildings suggested itself to me as an appropriate one. It is a great question if there is any necessity at all for a preface to such a book, but I beg to take the liberty with my readers of opening this edition with a few words of a prefatory nature. For many years past I have made a special and particular study of the Science of House Drainage, and that fact being known was the reason of my being employed to write this work for the above Journal, in the pages of which it appeared.
