Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A differential approximation for radiative transport is obtained which leads to a radiation term of the same order as the conduction term in the gas dynamic energy equation. It may be used to generate radiative energy flux and boundary conditions. As a demonstration, the plane-parallel Milne problem is worked out. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the temperature of a gas is not too high and the density of a gas is not too low, the transfer of heat by radiation is usually negligibly small in comparison with that by conduction and convection. However, in the hypersonic flow of space flight, particularly in the re-entry of a space vehicle, and in the flow problem involving nuclear reaction such as in the blast wave of nuclear bomb or in the peaceful use of the controlled fusion reaction, the temperature of the gas may be very high and the density of the gas may be very low. As a result, thermal radiation becomes a very important mode of heat transfer. A complete analysis of such high temperature flow fields should be based upon a study of the gasdynamic field and the radiation field simultaneously. Hence during the last few years, considerable efforts have been made to study such interaction problems between gasdynamic field and radiation field and a new title, Radiation Gasdynamics, has been suggested for this subject. Even though radiative transfer has been studied for a long time by astro physicists, the interaction between the radiation field and the gadsynamic field has been only extensively studied recently.
Book Synopsis The Method of Differential Approximation by : Y.I. Shokin
Download or read book The Method of Differential Approximation written by Y.I. Shokin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very glad that this book is now accessible to English-speaking scientists. During the three years following the publication of the original Russian edition, the method of differential approximation has been rapidly expanded and unfortunately I was unable to incorporate into the English edition all of the material which whould have reflected its present state of development. Nevertheless, a considerable amount of recently obtained results have been added and the bibliography has been enlarged accordingly, so that the English edition is one third longer than the Russian original. Mathematical rigorousness is a basic feature of this monograph. The reader should therefore be familiar with the theory of partial differential equations and difference equations. Some knowledge of group theory as applied to problems in physics, especially the theory of Lie groups, would also be useful. The treatment of the approximation of gas dynamic equations focuses on the question of how to characterize the typical features of difference equations on the basis of the related differential approximation, which can be discussed using the fully developed theory of partial differential equations.

Topics on high-speed shocks, stellar atmospheres, and meteorology are also encompassed.
Download or read book Radiation and Reentry written by S Penner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation and Reentry is an integrated review of a series of publications dealing with radiative transfer theory, applied spectroscopy, radiation gas dynamics, and ablation phenomena. This book contains seven chapters and begins with a presentation of opacity calculations under conditions for which detailed considerations of spectral line structures and widths are not required. The discussion then shifts to the basic methods involved in the formulation of radiative transfer problems; origin and definition of the Planck and Rosseland mean free paths; the conservation equations for reacting, multicomponent gas mixtures with proper allowance for radiative energy flux; and similarity parameters in radiation gas dynamics. These topics are followed by a summary of data relevant to the optically thick, optically thin, and isothermal cases for air in local thermodynamic equilibrium. A chapter describes the radiative properties of spherical particles and their particle size distributions. Another chapter considers the estimation of radiant-energy transmission through atmosphere. The concluding chapters explore the radiation transfer effects on the flow about a re-entry body and the specific problems of the effect of radiant-energy transfer on acoustic waves, shock wave structure, and shock and boundary layers. These chapters also examine the theoretical and experimental studies on the ablation of re-entry vehicles. This book is of great value to educated nonspecialists who are interested in the application of radiation field to high-speed atmospheric entry.
Book Synopsis Modern Developments in Gas Dynamics by : W. H. Loh
Download or read book Modern Developments in Gas Dynamics written by W. H. Loh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled "Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer" was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled "Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics" and "Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics." Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Problems of Engineering by : William F. Ames
Download or read book Nonlinear Problems of Engineering written by William F. Ames and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Problems of Engineering reviews certain nonlinear problems of engineering. This book provides a discussion of nonlinear problems that occur in four areas, namely, mathematical methods, fluid mechanics, mechanics of solids, and transport phenomena. Organized into 15 chapters, this book begins with an overview of some of the fundamental ideas of two mathematical theories, namely, invariant imbedding and dynamic programming. This text then explores nonlinear integral equations, which have long occupied a prominent place in mathematical analysis. Other chapters consider the phenomena associated with essentially divergent small-divisor series, such as may occur in the formal solution of differential equations that represent the oscillations of conservative dynamical systems. This book discusses as well the mechanics of idealized textiles consisting of inextensible filaments. The final chapter deals with the use of the PeacemanâRachford alternating direction implicit method for solving the finite difference analogs of boundary value problems. This book is a valuable resource for engineers and mathematicians.
Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics by : Dale R. Durran
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics written by Dale R. Durran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations, with focus on atmospheric and oceanic flows. The book covers both the essentials of building a numerical model and the more sophisticated techniques that are now available. Finite difference methods, spectral methods, finite element method, flux-corrected methods and TVC schemes are all discussed. Throughout, the author keeps to a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a mathematical text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. The book establishes a concrete link between theory and practice using an extensive range of test problems to illustrate the theoretically derived properties of various methods. From the reviews: "...the books unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics."
