There is a widespread reluctance in industry to use temperature to speed up the separation process, influence the selectivity of a separation or implement novel detection techniques. However, the technology has now matured and could revolutionize chromatography as we see it today. Better equipment, such as heating systems able to generate faster heating rates, is becoming more readily available. Also, columns based on silica gel, which can withstand higher temperatures for an extended period, are now being introduced. Nevertheless, further technological and methodical efforts are needed to establish the method in a regulated environment like the pharmaceutical industry. This is the only text to cover all the practical aspects, as well as the underlying theoretical principles, of setting up an HPLC system for high-temperature operation. It is not intended solely for academics but will also benefit the researcher interested in more practical considerations. The author is a recognized expert and has conducted several studies with partners from industry to validate the method. Many real examples from these studies have been included in the book. The aim is to support practitioners in the creation of their own protocols without the need to rely solely on trial and error. The book starts with a brief definition of high-temperature liquid chromatography before going on to cover: system set up; the heating system; mobile phase considerations; suitable stationary phases; method development using temperature programming; analyte stability, and special hyphenation techniques using superheated water as a mobile phase. In each chapter, experimental data is used to illustrate the main statements and the advantages over conventional HPLC are evaluated. The book concludes with a critical outlook on further developments and applications underlining the necessary advances needed to make high-temperature HPLC more robust.

Evidence given to support this picture includes data pertaining to colligative properties of acids, bases, and salts and also conductance, dielectric constants, distribution between immiscible solvents, and spectral absorption in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet. The acids upon which attention is centered are proton-donor compounds that are measurably ionized in water, such as aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids, substituted phenols and mineral acids. The bases of principal interest are likewise compounds capable of forming ions in water, for example, aliphatic and aromatic amines and derivatives of guanidine or pyridine. The solvents emphasized are hydrocarbons and halohydrocarbons, but data for dipolar aprotic solvents (for example, acetone, acetonitrile, and nitrobenzene) are included. Contrasts in acid-base behavior and in acidity and basicity scales in aprotic and water-like solvents are discussed. The role of hydrogen bonding in aprotic solvents is discussed at length. Important types of hydrogen-bonded structures include chelate rings; self-associated acids, bases, and salts; hydrogen-bonded ion pairs; and homo- and heteroconjugate cations and anions. Examples are given in which hydrogen bonding of these types affects such properties as the absorption spectrum of a salt, the catalytic effect of an acid, and the accurate location of a titration endpoint. Solutions in these solvents are of technological interest in connection with novel battery systems and chemical synthesis, while studies of ion solvation and transport properties have fostered academic interest. This monograph is primarily concerned with electrolytic solutions although discussion of non-electrolyte solutions has not been excluded. We have deliberately omitted consideration of the important area of solvent extraction, since this has been adequately covered elsewhere. Our contributors were asked to review and discuss their respective areas with particular reference to differences in technique necessitated by use of non-aqueous solvents while not reiterating facts well-known from experience with aqueous solutions. We have striven to build their contributions into a coherent and consistent whole. Another paper points out that the energy change associated with the solvation of ions can be represented as the sum of two energy terms; firstly, from the dielectric polarization of the solvent molecules in the continuous dielectric medium; and secondly, due to specific ion-solvent interactions in the inner solvation shells of the ions. The energy contribution of the latter is minimal but can show comparatively large differences in various types of solvents. Another paper describes the chemistry of solutions in highly associated strong protonic acid solvents, including sulphuric acid, oleums, fluorosulfuric acid, and hydrogen fluoride. Organic chemists, analytical chemists, investigators, and scientists whose works involve physical or inorganic chemistry will find the collection truly beneficial.
