Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a group G with a finite set of generators, S, it is natural to ask if the product of n generators from S evaluate to the identity. The enumerative version of this problem, known as the cogrowth problem, counts the number of such products and studies the associated counting sequence. Many cogrowth sequences are known. This thesis focuses on the free products of finite groups: Specifically, cyclic and dihedral groups. Such groups have the property that their cogrowth generating functions are algebraic functions, and thus, are solutions to implicit polynomial equations. Using algebraic elimination techniques and free probability theory, we establish upper bounds on the degrees of the polynomial equations that they satisfy. This has implications for asymptotic enumeration, and makes it theoretically possible to determine the functions explicitly.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are based on the talks given at two special sessions at the AMS Sectional meetings held in 2004. The articles cover various topological and asymptotic aspects of group theory, such as hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, asymptotic cones, Thompson's group, Nielsen fixed point theory, homology, groups acting on trees, groups generated by finite automata, iterated monodromy groups, random walks on finitely generated groups, heat kernels, and currents on free groups.

Book Synopsis Groups St Andrews 1997 in Bath: Volume 2 by : C. M. Campbell
Download or read book Groups St Andrews 1997 in Bath: Volume 2 written by C. M. Campbell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-18 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume book contains selected papers from the international conference "Groups St. Andrews 1997 in Bath". The articles are arranged in roughly alphabetical order and cover a wide spectrum of modern group theory. There are articles based on lecture courses given by five main speakers together with refereed survey and research articles contributed by other conference participants. Proceedings of earlier "Groups St. Andrews" conferences have had a major impact on the development of group theory and these volumes should be equally important.

Book Synopsis Complexity and Randomness in Group Theory by : Frédérique Bassino

This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows new directions in group theory motivated by computer science. It reflects the transition from geometric group theory to group theory of the 21st century that has strong connections to computer science. Now that geometric group theory is drifting further and further away from group theory to geometry, it is natural to look for new tools and new directions in group theory which are present.

Book Synopsis Topics in Geometric Group Theory by : Pierre de la Harpe
Download or read book Topics in Geometric Group Theory written by Pierre de la Harpe and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-10-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Pierre de la Harpe provides a concise and engaging introduction to geometric group theory, a new method for studying infinite groups via their intrinsic geometry that has played a major role in mathematics over the past two decades. A recognized expert in the field, de la Harpe adopts a hands-on approach, illustrating key concepts with numerous concrete examples. The first five chapters present basic combinatorial and geometric group theory in a unique and refreshing way, with an emphasis on finitely generated versus finitely presented groups. In the final three chapters, de la Harpe discusses new material on the growth of groups, including a detailed treatment of the "Grigorchuk group." Most sections are followed by exercises and a list of problems and complements, enhancing the book's value for students; problems range from slightly more difficult exercises to open research problems in the field. An extensive list of references directs readers to more advanced results as well as connections with other fields.
