Published in 1868, this novel captures the spirit of exploration and adventure in the exotic and perilous environment of the Amazon rainforest. Arthur Ashurst embarks on a journey to the Amazon to find his uncle, who has been conducting research in the region. Along the way, Arthur encounters various obstacles, including treacherous wildlife, hostile environments, and the complexities of navigating the dense jungle. With the help of his uncle and their guide Carlos, Arthur learns about the rich biodiversity of the Amazon and gains a deeper appreciation for the natural world. The novel includes various adventures, such as encounters with dangerous animals, navigating river rapids, and overcoming challenges posed by the jungle. Throughout the story, themes of bravery, curiosity, and the importance of understanding and respecting nature are explored. W.H.G. Kingston's adventure novels, including "On the Banks of the Amazon," were popular during the Victorian era and have continued to be appreciated for their engaging storytelling and educational value. Book Synopsis In the Amazon Jungle by : Algot Lange
Download or read book In the Amazon Jungle written by Algot Lange and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Amazon Jungle: Adventures in Remote Parts of the Upper Amazon River, Including a Sojourn Among Cannibal Indians When Mr. Algot Lange told me he was going to the headwaters of the Amazon, I was particularly interested because once, years ago, I had turned my own mind in that direction with considerable longing. I knew he would encounter many set-backs, but I never would have predicted the adventures he actually passed through alive. He started in fine spirits: buoyant, strong, vigorous. When I saw him again in New York, a year or so later, on his return, he was an emaciated fever-wreck, placing one foot before the other only with much exertion and indeed barely able to hold himself erect. A few weeks in the hospital, followed by a daily diet of quinine, improved his condition, but after months he had scarcely arrived at his previous excellent physical state. Book Synopsis In the Heart of the Amazon Forest by : Henry Walter Bates
Download or read book In the Heart of the Amazon Forest written by Henry Walter Bates and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most impressive of all Victorian scientists but also a marvellous writer, Bates' (1825-1892) account of his years in the upper reaches of the Amazon is almost too good to be true - a great monument to human inquisitiveness as he battles great hoards of malevolent reptiles and insects in his quest for ever more obscure specimens on ever more narrow and creeper-choked tributaries. Great Journeys allows readers to travel both around the planet and back through the centuries – but also back into ideas and worlds frightening, ruthless and cruel in different ways from our own. Few reading experiences can begin to match that of engaging with writers who saw astounding things: Great civilisations, walls of ice, violent and implacable jungles, deserts and mountains, multitudes of birds and flowers new to science. Reading these books is to see the world afresh, to rediscover a time when many cultures were quite strange to each other, where legends and stories were treated as facts and in which so much was still to be discovered.
Book Synopsis Travels on the Amazon by : Alfred Russel Wallace

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT was on the morning of the 26th of May, 1848, that after a short passage of twenty-nine days from Liverpool, we came to anchor opposite the southern entrance to the River Amazon, and obtained our first view of South America. In the afternoon the pilot came on board, and the next morning we sailed with a fair wind up the river, which for fifty miles could only be distinguished from the ocean by its calmness and discoloured water, the northern shore being invisible, and the southern at a distance of ten or twelve miles. Early on the morning of the 28th we again anchored; and when the sun rose in a cloudless sky, the city of Pará, surrounded by the dense forest, and overtopped by palms and plantains, greeted our sight, appearing doubly beautiful from the presence of those luxuriant tropical productions in a state of nature, which we had so often admired in the conservatories of Kew and Chatsworth. The canoes passing with their motley crews of Negroes and Indians, the vultures soaring overhead or walking lazily about the beach, and the crowds of swallows on the churches and house-tops, all served to occupy our attention till the Custom-house officers visited us, and we were allowed to go on shore. Pará contains about 15,000 inhabitants, and does not cover a great extent of ground; yet it is the largest city on the greatest river in the world, the Amazon, and is the capital of a province equal in extent to all Western Europe. It is the residence of a President appointed by the Emperor of Brazil, and of a Bishop whose see extends two thousand miles into the interior, over a country peopled by countless tribes of unconverted Indians. The province of Pará is the most northern portion of Brazil, and though it is naturally the richest part of that vast empire, it is the least known, and at present of the least commercial importance. The appearance of the city from the river, which is the best view that can be obtained of it, is not more foreign than that of Calais or Boulogne. The houses are generally white, and several handsome churches and public buildings raise their towers and domes above them. The vigour of vegetation is everywhere apparent. The ledges and mouldings support a growth of small plants, and from the wall-tops and window-openings of the churches often spring luxuriant weeds and sometimes small trees. Above and below and behind the city, as far as the eye can reach, extends the unbroken forest; all the small islands in the river are wooded to the water's edge, and many sandbanks flooded at high-water are covered with shrubs and small trees, whose tops only now appeared above the surface. The general aspect of the trees was not different from those of Europe, except where the "feathery palm-trees" raised their graceful forms; but our imaginations were busy picturing the wonderful scenes to be beheld in their dark recesses, and we longed for the time when we should be at liberty to explore them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voyage Up the River Amazon, Including a Residence at Para IN these stirring times, when all anglo-saxondom is on the qui-vive for novelty, and the discovery of a new watering place is hailed with more enthusiasm than the discovery of a new planet - when the universal Yankee nation has so nearly exhausted all the whereabouts which modern facilities for locomotion have brought so conveniently within its reach; -when the Old World has become also an old story, and Summer excursions to St. Petersburg and Tornea, and Winter sojourns in Australia and Types, have afforded amusement, not only to travelers themselves, but to those who, at their own fire-sides, like equally well to take a trip to the ends of the Earth in their comfortable arm-chairs; it has been a mat ter of surprise to me, that those who live upon the excitement of seeing and telling some new thing, have so seldom betaken themselves to our Southern continent. Promising indeed to lovers of the marvelous is that land, where the highest of Earth's mountains seek her brightest skies, as though their tall peaks sought a nearer acquaintance with the most glorious of stars; where the mightiest of rivers roll majestically through primeval forests of boundless extent, concealing, yet bringing forth the most beautiful and varied forms of animal and vegetable existence; where Peruvian gold has tempted, and Amazonian women have repulsed, the unprincipled adventurer; and where Jesuit missionaries, and luckless traders, have fallen victims to cannibal Indians, and epicurean anacondas. CHAPTER XV CONCLUSION OF THE VOYAGE ON THE PURUS "VTO account of the river Amazon would be satisfactory if the tapir were not noticed; and I feel the more justified in recording what I know about it that there seems to be no modern and reliable history of the animal accessible. The most recent "popular natural history" that I have seen copies, word for word, the accounts given in a work published twenty years ago; and this last work has to rely largely on such ancient writers as Humboldt and Schomburgk; men not over-reliable, and not very close observers of what they did see, especially the first-named traveller. The Amazonian tapir may be compared in size to a small ox; and weighs, I should think (for I have never actually seen one in the scales), about 400 pounds. It is a thick-set, heavily built animal, with a remarkably piggish external appearance, especially when lying down. The hide is half an inch thick when freshly stripped off, and much more in some places; but it is not particularly tough, and knife, spear or arrow will penetrate it easily enough; nor is the animal very tenacious of life. A single rifle bullet, of small size, drops it at once, and a comparatively small wound with arrow, or dart, will disable it; and it speedily dies, though it is full of blood. The skin is very smooth and tightly drawn on the animal, and is of a blackish brown hue, and sparsely covered with coarse hair. As a rule it is encased in mud, and its true colour is only seen when the animal is dead and cleaned; or when it emerges from a prolonged bath, or in very wet weather. It is eminently a fluvial animal. I have never seen any of them except in the immediate neighbourhood of large rivers. They do not even visit lakes and pools, except some of those...
