Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blennies are diverse group of bony fishes found around the globe. Most blennies are small and somewhat difficult to identify, so until recently these fish did not occupy the interests of many ichthyologists and even fewer ecologists. With nearly 900 species, blennies are important members of most coastal marine communities. This book should stimula

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume provides an original synthesis and novel overview of Antarctic fish biology, detailing the evolution of these fish in some of the most unusual and extreme environments in the world. Focusing on one group of fish, the notothenoioids, which contain the majority of the current organismal diversity, this book describes a fauna that has evolved in isolation and experienced incredible adaptive radiation by acquiring numerous physiological specializations. Darwin's finches and African cichlids may be joined by Antarctic fishes as exemplars of adaptive radiation. The books' coverage is detailed and comprehensive, and the author clearly recognizes the fact that these fish are a component of a most interesting and biologically unique ecosystem and environment. Topics in Antarctic Fish Biology include past and present environments, fossil records, taxonomic composition of fauna, systematic relationships, diversification, and physiological adaptations.

Book excerpt: Intertidal Fishes describes the fishes inhabiting the narrow strip of habitat between the high and low tide marks along the rocky coastlines of the world. It analyzes the specialized traits of these fishes that have adapted to living in the dynamic and challenging space where they are alternately exposed to the air and submerged in water with the ebb and flow of the tides. This book provides a comprehensive account of fishes largely overlooked in many previous studies of intertidal organisms and emphasizes how they differ from fishes living in other deeper-water habitats. Coverage includes air breathing, movements and homing, sensory systems, spawning and parental care, feeding habits, community structure, systematic relationships, distribution patterns, and the fossil record in the intertidal zone. - Written by an international team of 21 experts on intertidal fish biology - Worldwide coverage of intertidal fishes - Comprehensive phylogenetic listing of all fish families with intertidal members - Global biogeographic analysis involving over 700 species from 86 sites - Outlines field and laboratory methods pertinent to studying intertidal fishes - Thorough ecological coverage with chapters on vertical distribution, movements and homing, reproduction, feeding, and community structure - Covers the physiology of aerial and aquatic respiration, osmoregulation, and sensory systems

Book excerpt: The poles undergo climate changes exceeding those in the rest of the world in terms of their speed and extent, and have a key role in modulating the climate of the Earth. Ecosystems adapted to polar environments are likely to become vulnerable to climate changes. Their responses allow us to analyse and foresee the impact of changes at lower latitudes. We need to increase our knowledge of the polar marine fauna of continental shelves, slopes and deep sea, as identifying the responses of species and communities is crucial to establishing efficient strategies against threats to biodiversity, using international and cross-disciplinary approaches. The IPY 2007-2009 was a scientific milestone. The outstanding contribution of Marine Biology is reflected in this volume and the next one on “Adaptation and Evolution in Marine Environments – The Impacts of Global Change on Biodiversity” from the series “From Pole to Pole”, making these volumes a unique and invaluable component of the scientific outcome of the IPY.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 47. A systematic study was made of the calanoid copepod genus Haloptilus found in Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl and Bongo plankton Subantarctic seas and adjacent waters. A total of 799 adult copepods representing eight species of Haloptilus were found, of which only one species (H. ocellatus) was truly endemic to the Antarctic, occurring exclusively in waters south of the Antarctic Convergence. Three other species that were also found in the Antarctic were H. fons, H. oxycephalus, and H. longicirrus, of which the last is a new record and the first two are known as more or less cosmopolitan species. Four warmwater species found at stations just north to the Subantarctic were H. spiniceps, H. ornatus, H. longicornis, and H. paralongicirrus, of which the last is a new record. All species are redefined with pertinent descriptions and illustrations. A key is presented for identification of the species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take your knowledge of fishes to the next level Fishes of the World, Fifth Edition is the only modern, phylogenetically based classification of the world’s fishes. The updated text offers new phylogenetic diagrams that clarify the relationships among fish groups, as well as cutting-edge global knowledge that brings this classic reference up to date. With this resource, you can classify orders, families, and genera of fishes, understand the connections among fish groups, organize fishes in their evolutionary context, and imagine new areas of research. To further assist your work, this text provides representative drawings, many of them new, for most families of fishes, allowing you to make visual connections to the information as you read. It also contains many references to the classical as well as the most up-to-date literature on fish relationships, based on both morphology and molecular biology. The study of fishes is one that certainly requires dedication—and access to reliable, accurate information. With more than 30,000 known species of sharks, rays, and bony fishes, both lobe-finned and ray-finned, you will need to master your area of study with the assistance of the best reference materials available. This text will help you bring your knowledge of fishes to the next level. Explore the anatomical characteristics, distribution, common and scientific names, and phylogenetic relationships of fishes Access biological and anatomical information on more than 515 families of living fishes Better appreciate the complexities and controversies behind the modern view of fish relationships Refer to an extensive bibliography, which points you in the direction of additional, valuable, and up-to-date information, much of it published within the last few years Fishes of the World, Fifth Edition is an invaluable resource for professional ichthyologists, aquatic ecologists, marine biologists, fish breeders, aquaculturists, and conservationists.
