Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In various branches of fluid mechanics, our understanding is inhibited by the presence of turbulence. Although many experimental and theoretical studies have significantly helped to increase our physical understanding, a comp- hensive and predictive theory of turbulent flows has not yet been established. Therefore, the prediction of turbulent flow relies heavily on simulation stra- gies. The development of reliable methods for turbulent flow computation will have a significant impact on a variety of technological advancements. These range from aircraft and car design, to turbomachinery, combustors, and process engineering. Moreover, simulation approaches are important in materials - sign, prediction of biologically relevant flows, and also significantly contribute to the understanding of environmental processes including weather and climate forecasting. The material that is compiled in this book presents a coherent account of contemporary computational approaches for turbulent flows. It aims to p- vide the reader with information about the current state of the art as well as to stimulate directions for future research and development. The book puts part- ular emphasis on computational methods for incompressible and compressible turbulent flows as well as on methods for analysing and quantifying nume- cal errors in turbulent flow computations. In addition, it presents turbulence modelling approaches in the context of large eddy simulation, and unfolds the challenges in the field of simulations for multiphase flows and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of engineering flows in complex geometries. Apart from reviewing main research developments, new material is also included in many of the chapters.

Book excerpt: This volume includes articles on the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of various wave phenomena. For many years Waves 2003 and its five prior conferences have been an important forum for discussions on wave propagation. The topic is equally important for fundamental sciences, engineering, mathematics and, in particular, for industrial applications. Areas of specific interest are acoustics, electromagnetics, elasticity and related inverse and optimization problems. This book gives an extensive overview of recent developments in a very active field of scientific computing.

Book excerpt: The contents of the book cover topics on vortex dynamics in a variety of flow problems and describe observational measurements and their interpretation. The book contains 13 chapters that first include vortices in the earth and planetary sciences related to vortices in the Venus plasma wake and also on tropical cyclones and on rotating shallow water in the earth's atmosphere. Vortices in fluid problems include airplane wake vortices, vorticity evolution in free-shear flows, together with axisymmetric flows with swirl, as well as thermal conductivities in fluid layers. Vortices in relativistic fluids, in magnetic disks, solitons and vortices, and relaxation for point vortices were also examined. Other chapters describe conditions in a vortex bioreactor and in vortex yarn structures.

Book excerpt: Physical arguments are developed to show how aerodynamic sound is generated as a result of the movement of vortices, or of vorticity, in an unsteady fluid flow. In a very simple model the aeolian tone is attributed to the dipolelike flow caused by the stretching of vortex rings. There is no net stretching of vortex rings in a free flow, but each moving element of vorticity still causes a local dipole-like flow, so that equal and opposite elements act together to form quadrupoles. Mathematical developments follow. The simple aeolian tone model is shown to be valid for low Strouhal numbers, the general result also incorporating the effect of the fluctuating Bernoulli pressure at the surface of the body. The free flow quadrupole model is shown to be exact, and also to agree with Lighthill's result. Using vorticity as a common basis, the compressible flow is compared to the corresponding incompressible one, the hydrodynamic field and the relationship to classical field theory being discussed. Book excerpt: The book provides a survey of numerical methods for acoustics, namely the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). It is the first book summarizing FEM and BEM (and optimization) for acoustics. The book shows that both methods can be effectively used for many other cases, FEM even for open domains and BEM for closed ones. Emphasis of the book is put on numerical aspects and on treatment of the exterior problem in acoustics, i.e. noise radiation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introduction to the branch of fluid mechanics concerned with the production of sound by hydrodynamic flows. It is designed for a one semester introductory course at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level. Great care is taken to explain underlying fluid mechanical and acoustic concepts, and to describe fully the steps in a complicated derivation. The discussion deals specifically with low Mach number flows, which enables the sound produced by `vortex-surface' interactions to be analyzed using the `compact Green's function'. This provides a routine procedure for estimating the sound, and an easy identification of those parts of a structure that are likely to be important sources of sound.
