Book excerpt: Literary history has conventionally viewed Milton as the last real practitioner of the epic in English verse. Herbert Tucker's spirited book shows that the British tradition of epic poetry was unbroken from the French Revolution to World War I.
Book Synopsis Allusion to the Poets by : Christopher Ricks
Download or read book Allusion to the Poets written by Christopher Ricks and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allusion to the words and phrases of ancestral voices is one of the hiding-places of poetry's power. Poets appreciate the great debts that they owe to previous poets, and are often duly and newly grateful. Allusion to the Poets consists of twelve essays - four published here for the first time- on allusion and its relations, in particular on the use that poets in English have made of the very words of poets in English. The first half of the book, on 'The Poet as Heir', consists of six chapters devoted to individual poets, Augustan, Romantic, and Victorian: Dryden and Pope, Burns, Wordsworth, Byron, Keats, and Tennyson. Allusion is always a form of inheritance, not to be hoarded or squandered. The critical andcreative question is its imaginative co-operation with other kinds of legacy - with whatever for a particular poet or for a particular time is judged to be an unignorable inheritance: of a throne, perhaps, or of land; of intermixed languages; of the human senses; of money; of literature itself; orof our planet, long-lived but not eternal. The second half of the book is six essays on allusion's affiliations: to plagiarism (allusion being plagiarism's responsible opposite); to metaphor (allusion being a form that metaphor may take); to loneliness in poetry (allusion constituting company). And on allusion within poetry to prose (A E.Housman); on translation as exercising allusion (David Ferry); and on the clash between one poet's practice and his critical principles (Yvor Winters).

Book Synopsis Alfred, Lord Tennyson: Selected Poetry by : Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Download or read book Alfred, Lord Tennyson: Selected Poetry written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago Tennyson had begun to be dismissed as a poet whose work embodied everything the modern world was looking to leave behind. He still seems to readers to embody the substance of the Victorian era more fully than any other poet—but nowadays that is counted in his favor. Critics continue to find layers of complexity in poems once thought simplistic—while appreciating with fresh ears Tennyson’s aural mastery. This new edition includes the two long poems In Memoriam and Maud: A Monodrama in their entirety, all the short poems for which Tennyson remains famous, and a generous selection of his lesser-known poetry, together with a concise introduction to the poet and his work, and substantial headnotes for In Memoriam, Maud, and Idylls of the King. Unlike other editions that provide a selection of Tennyson’s work, this one includes both marginal glosses of obscure or archaic words and phrases, and extensive annotations at the bottom of each page. Appendices of visual material are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an examination of Tennyson's 'domestic poetry' - his portrayals of England and the English - in their changing nineteenth-century context, this book demonstrates that many of his representations were 'fabrications', more idealized than real, which played a vital part in the country's developing identity and sense of its place in the world.
Book Synopsis The Perversity of Poetry by : Dino Franco Felluga
Download or read book The Perversity of Poetry written by Dino Franco Felluga and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the dominant literary form, poetry was gradually eclipsed by the realist novel; indeed, by 1940 W. H. Auden was able to note, "Poetry makes nothing happen." In The Perversity of Poetry, Dino Franco Felluga explores the cultural background of poetry's marginalization by examining nineteenth-century reactions to Romantic poetry and ideology. Focusing on the work of Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron, as well as periodical reviews, student manuals, and contemporary medical journals, the book details the period's two contending (and equally outrageous) claims regarding poetry. Scott's poetry, on the one hand, was continually represented as a panacea for a modern world overtaken by new principles of utilitarianism, capitalism, industrialism, and democracy. Byron's, by contrast, was represented either as a cancer in the heart of the social order or as a contagious pandemic leading to various pathological symptoms. The book concludes with a coda on Alfred Lord Tennyson, which illustrates how the Victorian reception of Scott and Byron affected the most popular poetic genius of midcentury. Ultimately, The Perversity of Poetry uncovers how the shift to a rhetoric of health allowed critics to oppose what they perceived as a potent and potentially dangerous influence on the age, the very thing that would over the course of the century be marginalized into such obscurity: poetry, thanks to its perverse insistence on making something happen.
Book Synopsis The Role of Memory in the Poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson by : Violet E Beasley
Download or read book The Role of Memory in the Poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson written by Violet E Beasley and published by David Beasley. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By analyzing Tennyson's use of memory in his poetry, this study shows Tennyson as the abiding experimentalist in the use of the poetic memory—through it, he presents his diverse themes in a variety of ways. Discussed in this book are selections from his earliest volumes and “Poems (1842)”, “In Memoriam”, “Maud”, and “Idylls of the King”, which are chosen not only for their rich illustrative variety in the use of memory but also because they span the whole of his poetic career and, therefore, attest to his consistent concern with memory.

Book Synopsis The Cultural Production of Matthew Arnold by : Antony H. Harrison
Download or read book The Cultural Production of Matthew Arnold written by Antony H. Harrison and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Matthew Arnold as an eminent poet and the preeminent critic of his generation constitutes a remarkable historical spectacle orchestrated by a host of powerful Victorian cultural institutions. The Cultural Production of Matthew Arnold investigates these constructions by situating Arnold’s poetry in a number of contexts that partially shaped it. Such analysis revises our understanding of the formation of the elite (and elitist) male literary-intellectual subject during the 1840s and 1850s, as Arnold attempts self-definition and strives simultaneously to move toward a position of ideological influence upon intellectual institutions that were contested sites of economic, social, and political power in his era. Antony H. Harrison reopens discussion of selected works by Arnold in order to make visible some of their crucial sociohistorical, intertextual, and political components. Only by doing so can we ultimately view the cultural work of Arnold “steadily and ... whole,” and in a fashion that actually eschews this mystifying premise of all Arnoldian inquiry which, by the early twentieth century, had become wholly naturalized in the academy as ideology.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Introduction to Victorian Poetry by : Linda K. Hughes
Download or read book The Cambridge Introduction to Victorian Poetry written by Linda K. Hughes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian poetry was read and enjoyed by a much larger audience than is sometimes thought. Publication in widely-circulating periodicals, reprinting in book reviews, and excerpting in novels and essays ensured that major poets such as Tennyson, Browning, Hardy and Rossetti were household names, and they remain popular today. The Cambridge Introduction to Victorian Poetry provides an accessible overview of British poetry from 1830 to 1901, paying particular attention to its role in mass media print culture. Designed to interest both students and scholars, the book traces lively dialogues between poets and explains poets' choices of form, style and language. It also demonstrates poetry's relevance to Victorian debates on science, social justice, religion, imperialism, and art. Featuring a glossary of literary terms, a guide to further reading, and two examples of close readings of Victorian poems, this introduction is the ideal starting-point for the study of verse in the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis The Lyric in Victorian Memory by : Veronica Alfano
Download or read book The Lyric in Victorian Memory written by Veronica Alfano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of nineteenth-century poems that remember, yearn for, fixate on, and forget the past. Reflecting the current critical drive to reconcile formalist and historicist approaches to literature, it uses close readings to trace the complex interactions between memory as a theme and the (often-memorable) formal traits – such as brevity, stanzaic structure, and sonic repetition – that appear in the lyrics examined. This book considers the interwoven nature of remembering and forgetting in the work of four Victorian poets. It uses this theme to shed new light on the relationship between lyric and narrative, on the connections between gender and genre, and on the way in which Victorians represented and commemorated the past.
