Book Synopsis On Slugs and Puffs in Transitional Pipe Flow by : I. J. Wygnanski
Download or read book On Slugs and Puffs in Transitional Pipe Flow written by I. J. Wygnanski and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditionally sampled hot-wire measurements were taken in a pipe at Reynolds numbers corresponding to the onset of turbulence. The pipe was smooth and carefully aligned so that turbulent slugs appeared naturally at a Reynolds number greater than 50,000. Transition could be initiated at lower Reynolds numbers by introducing disturbances into the inlet. For slightly disturbed inlet, turbulent slugs were observed which occupied the entire cross section of the pipe, growing in length as they proceed downstream. When a large distrubance was introduced into the inlet, the turbulent regions which were convected downstream were designated as puffs. Results of the study are discussed.

Book excerpt: A classical problem in fluid mechanics, laminar to turbulent transition in pipe flow, was investigated. Transition in pipe flow was first studied in detail by Reynolds (1883) and continued subsequently by numerous researchers. Nevertheless, there are still number of unknown issues that need clarification. As is well known, two distinct types of flow structure exist during a laminar to turbulent transition in pipes, namely puffs and slugs, termed by Wygnanski (1973). Investigations described in this dissertation were concentrated in the development of puffs and slugs in a pipe at different Reynolds numbers, following some preliminary research works. Also considered is a transformation from puffs to slugs through puff splittings, occurring while they propagate in a pipe or by an increase in Reynolds number. In low Reynolds number pipe flows, a dissipation of puffs was observed and then investigated. The time between when puffs were created and dissipated was termed `full- lifetime' and measured directly by a pressure transient. According to the investigations, possible evolutions of puffs were found and discussed.

This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of turbulent ?ow and the transition from laminar to turbulent ?ow are the most important unsolved problems of ?uid mechanics and aerodynamics. - sides being a fundamental question of ?uid mechanics, there are numerous app- cations relying on information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent ?ow. For example, the control of transition to turbulence is - pecially important in (1) skin-friction reduction of energy ef?cient aircraft, (2) the performance of heat exchangers and diffusers, (3) propulsion requirements for - personic aircraft, and (4) separation control. While considerable progress has been made in the science of laminar to turbulent transition over the last 30 years, the c- tinuing increase in computer power as well as new theoretical developments are now revolutionizing the area. It is now starting to be possible to move from simple 1D eigenvalue problems in canonical ?ows to global modes in complex ?ows, all - companied by accurate large-scale direct numerical simulations (DNS). Here, novel experimental techniques such as modern particle image velocimetry (PIV) also have an important role. Theoretically the in?uence of non-normality on the stability and transition is gaining importance, in particular for complex ?ows. At the same time the enigma of transition in the oldest ?ow investigated, Reynolds pipe ?ow tran- tion experiment, is regaining attention. Ideas from dynamical systems together with DNS and experiments are here giving us new insights.
Book Synopsis On Transition in a Pipe. Part II. The Equilibrium Puff by : I. Wyganski
Download or read book On Transition in a Pipe. Part II. The Equilibrium Puff written by I. Wyganski and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditionally sampled hot wire measurements were taken in a pipe at low Reynolds numbers between 2700 and 2000 corresponding to the onset of turbulence as a result of a large perturbation in the flow. This type of transition gives rise to a turbulent puff which maintains itself indefinitely around Re=2200. The structure of the puff was investigated in some detail and was found to be very different from the structure of the fully developed turbulent pipe flow, nevertheless it is independent of the character to the disturbance which created it. The purpose of the study was to gain some insight into the mechanism of transition in a pipe. (Author).

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origin of Species Charles Darwin The origin of turbulence in fluids is a long-standing problem and has been the focus of research for decades due to its great importance in a variety of engineering applications. Furthermore, the study of the origin of turbulence is part of the fundamental physical problem of turbulence description and the philosophical problem of determinism and chaos. At the end of the nineteenth century, Reynolds and Rayleigh conjectured that the reason of the transition of laminar flow to the 'sinuous' state is in stability which results in amplification of wavy disturbances and breakdown of the laminar regime. Heisenberg (1924) was the founder of linear hydrody namic stability theory. The first calculations of boundary layer stability were fulfilled in pioneer works of Tollmien (1929) and Schlichting (1932, 1933). Later Taylor (1936) hypothesized that the transition to turbulence is initi ated by free-stream oscillations inducing local separations near wall. Up to the 1940s, skepticism of the stability theory predominated, in particular due to the experimental results of Dryden (1934, 1936). Only the experiments of Schubauer and Skramstad (1948) revealed the determining role of insta bility waves in the transition. Now it is well established that the transition to turbulence in shear flows at small and moderate levels of environmental disturbances occurs through development of instability waves in the initial laminar flow. In Chapter 1 we start with the fundamentals of stability theory, employing results of the early studies and recent advances.
Book Synopsis Direct Numerical Simulation of Transition to Turbulence and Turbulence Control in Pipe Flow by : Baofang Song
Download or read book Direct Numerical Simulation of Transition to Turbulence and Turbulence Control in Pipe Flow written by Baofang Song and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this thesis is the transition to turbulence and turbulence control in pipe flow. In pipes turbulence arises despite the linear stability of the laminar flow (subcritical transition) and directly from onset the flow is spatio-temporally complex. Given sufficiently strong perturbations, turbulence appears in localized patches (puffs) at low Reynolds numbers. At high Reynolds number, patches aggressively grow (slugs) and eventually render the flow fully turbulent. The questions of when and how turbulence starts to grow have long challenged scientists and will be discussed in-dep ...

Book Synopsis Advances in Turbulence VI by : S. Gavrilakis
Download or read book Advances in Turbulence VI written by S. Gavrilakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Turbulence VI presents an update on the state of turbulence research with some bias towards research in Europe, since it represents an almost complete collection of the paper presentations at the Sixth European Turbulence Conference, sponsored by EUROMECH, ERCOFTAC and COST, and held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, July 2-5, 1996. The problem of transition, together with the structural description of turbulence, and the scaling laws of fully developed turbulence have continued to receive most attention by the research community and much progress has been made since the last European Turbulence Conference in 1994. The volume is thus geared towards specialists in the area of flow turbulence who could not attend the conference, as well as anybody who wishes quickly to assess the most active current research areas and the groups associated with them.
Book Synopsis Origin of Turbulence by : Hua-Shu Dou
Download or read book Origin of Turbulence written by Hua-Shu Dou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the new discovery of the origin of turbulence from Navier–Stokes equations. The fully developed turbulence is found to be composed of singularities of flow field. The mechanisms of flow stability and turbulent transition are described using the energy gradient theory, which states all the flow instability and breakdown resulted from the gradient of the total mechanical energy normal to the flow direction. This approach is universal for flow instability in Newtonian flow and non-Newtonian flow. The theory has been used to solve several problems, such as plane and pipe Poiseuille flows, plane Couette flow, Taylor–Couette flow, flows in straight coaxial annulus, flows in curved pipes and ducts, thermal convection flow, viscoelastic flow, and magnet fluid flow, etc. The theory is in agreement with results from numerical simulations and experiments. The analytical method used in this book is novel and is different from the traditional approaches. This book includes the fundamental basics of flow stability and turbulent transition, the essentials of the energy gradient theory, and the applications of the theory to several practical problems. This book is suitable for researchers and graduate students.
