Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary study of the human drama of replacement. Is one’s irreplaceability dependent on surrounding oneself by a replication of others? Is love intrinsically repetitious or built on a fantasy of uniqueness? The sense that a person’s value is blotted out if someone takes their place can be seen in the serial monogamy of our age and in the lives of ‘replacement children’ – children born into a family that has recently lost a child, whom they may even be named after. The book investigates various forms of replacement, including AI and doubling, incest and bedtricks, imposters and revenants, human rights and ‘surrogacy’, and intertextuality and adaptation. The authors highlight the emotions of betrayal, jealousy and desire both within and across generations. On Replacement consists of 24 essays divided into seven sections: What is replacement?, Law & society, Wayward women, Lost children, Replacement films, The Holocaust and Psychoanalysis. The book will appeal to anyone engaged in reading cultural and social representations of replacement.

Book Synopsis Adequacy of Pension Systems in Europe: An analysis based on comprehensive replacement rates by : Elsa Fornero
Download or read book Adequacy of Pension Systems in Europe: An analysis based on comprehensive replacement rates written by Elsa Fornero and published by CEPS. This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to develop indicators to highlight the ability of different national pension systems to enable individuals to maintain their living standards at retirement. Authors Margherita Borella and Elsa Fornero of the University of Turin and CeRP, perform the analysis using data and projections on different European countries and propose the use of a 'COmprehensive Replacement' (CORE) rate. Their aim is to compute, for a set of countries representative of the different European welfare and pension systems, both an actual (data-based) version of CORE, based on ECHP data, and to project its evolution into the future. The paper is organised as follows. Section 1 provides a theoretical framework as well as a review of the literature on the topic. Section 2 contains the computation of replacement rates based on ECHP data. In Section 3 CeRPSAM projections are used to compute COREs over time. Section 4 concludes.

Twenty minutes later, the girl's mother turns up, panicked and distraught. It doesn't take long to clear things up, and mother and daughter are soon reunited and sent on their way. Miles away, the body of a man is discovered, floating in a bathtub, but the most surprising discovery of all is that he isn't dead. Despite his injuries, he is very much alive. Two seemingly unrelated events. But as DS Harper begins to investigate, disturbing connections between the two incidents start to surface, and suddenly it's not clear where the danger truly lies. Harper must find out, and quickly. Because someone, or something, is closing in and she needs to uncover the truth before it's too late... Weaving together the trademark folklore inspiration that readers loved in Little Darlings, with the procedural narrative force of a brilliant mystery, this is the excellent and unnerving new novel from Melanie Golding. * * * Readers are captivated by The Replacement!: I don't think I breathed properly throughout this brilliantly crafted thriller . . .
