Book excerpt: Numerical modeling of fluid flow and dissolved species transport in the subsurface is a challenging task, given variability and measurement uncertainty in the physical properties of the rock, the complexities of multi-fluid interaction, and limited computational resources. Nonetheless, this thesis seeks to expand our modeling capabilities in the context of contaminant hydrogeology. We describe the numerical simulator CompFlow Bio and use it to model invasion of a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminant through the vadose zone and below the water table in a fractured porous rock. CompFlow Bio is a three-phase, multicomponent, deterministic numerical model for fluid flow and dissolved species transport; it includes capillary pressure and equilibrium partitioning relationships. We have augmented the model to include randomly generated, axis-aligned, discrete fracture networks (DFNs). The DFN is coupled with the porous medium (PM) to form a single continuum. The domain is discretized using a finite-volume scheme in an unstructured mesh of rectilinear control volumes (CVs). Herein we present the governing equations, unstructured mesh creation scheme, algebraic development of fracture intersection CV elimination, and coupling of PM CVs over a fracture plane to permit asperity contact bridged flow. We include: small scale two-phase water-air and NAPL-water simulations to validate the practice of intersection CV elimination; small scale simulations with water-air, NAPL-water, and NAPL-water-air systems in a grid refinement exercise and to demonstrate the effect of asperity contact bridged flow; intermediate scale 3D simulations of NAPL invading the saturated zone, based on the Smithville, Ontario, site; intermediate scale 2D and 3D simulations of NAPL invading the vadose zone and saturated zone with transient recharge, based on the Santa Susana Field Laboratory site, California. Our findings indicate that: the formulation provides a practical and satisfactory way of modeling three-phase flow in discretely fractured porous rock; numerical error caused by spatial discretization manifests itself as several biases in physical flow processes; that asperity contact is important in establishing target water saturation conditions in the vadose zone; and simulation results are sensitive to relative permeability-saturation-capillary pressure relationships. We suggest a number of enhancements to CompFlow Bio to overcome certain computational limitations.

Book excerpt: In this work, we used a high-resolution micro-CT scanner integrated with a three-phase core-flooding apparatus to perform two- and three-phase flow experiments on fractured sandstone and carbonate rock samples. The study aimed at investigating how the fluids in the matrix interact with those in the fracture conduit when oil spreadability plays a key role. In-situ fluid distribution maps are compared under spreading and nonspreading conditions during secondary and tertiary gas injection processes. In the case of spreading fluid system and secondary gas injection process, the oil phase in the matrix is not trapped. The injected gas invades large oil-filled pores in the matrix and displaces oil into the fracture while leaving relatively thick spreading layers of the defending fluid in the crevices. These layers play a pivotal role in maintaining the hydraulic connectivity of oil and ultimately lower remaining oil saturation significantly. In case where the initial oil saturation in the matrix is hydraulically trapped due to a preceding waterflood, gas first displaces brine before accessing oil. When gas reaches trapped oil globules, the oil spreads between brine in the corners and gas in the center of the elements and becomes reconnected. In both scenarios, the oil phase maintains its hydraulic conductivity through spreading layers and drains into the fracture. This phenomenon has a significant impact on oil production from matrix in fractured oil reservoirs. However, infrequent oil layers observed under nonspreading condition are not stable and collapse easily as gas/oil capillary pressure is increased during gas injection. This means that oil has poor connectivity that hinders its movement from the matrix to the fracture. In another group of experiments, the effect of wettability on matrix-fracture interactions is investigated by performing tertiary gas injection on an oil-wet fractured limestone sample. The distribution of the measured in-situ contact angles indicated that the wettability alteration in the matrix surrounding the fracture was relatively less uniform and lower than that in the intact matrix. This was attributed to the presence of fracture, which reduced the invasion of crude oil into the neighboring matrix during drainage. The insight developed in this work using different rock types, wettability conditions, and three-phase saturation histories may have direct implications for the design of EOR schemes involving gas injection.

Book excerpt: We present the results of systematic micro-scale experimental investigations of multi-phase flow through fractured rock samples under a wide range of flow conditions. The results of the study have direct applications in fluid flow through fractures in conventional reservoirs and hydraulically-induced fractures in ultra-tight unconventional reservoirs. We generate high-resolution, three-dimensional maps of fluid distribution within a rough-walled fracture and its neighboring matrix using a miniature water-wet, fractured sandstone core sample. These maps along with steady-state pressure drop data are then used to shed light on the dominant flow mechanisms and preferential flow paths through the matrix and fracture domains as well as fluid transfer between them during numerous drainage and imbibition displacement cycles. Due to the topology of the fracture in the medium and the magnitude of the local capillary pressures that are established under varying flow conditions, different flow mechanisms govern the transport of the wetting phase through the fracture and matrix, i.e., fracture layer flow, fracture bulk flow, and advancement through matrix pores. The competition between these transport mechanisms is regulated by the medium as it identifies the flow path with minimum pressure drop from the inlet to the outlet of the hybrid matrix-fracture system. The resulting balance determines the magnitude of fluid transfer experienced by the neighboring matrix and ultimate recovery as a result. In the second category of the experiments, we probe two- and three-phase flow displacement processes in proppant-packed fractured shale samples under varying stress conditions. Three sets of experiments are performed to represent the fluid flow behavior through hydraulic fractures in shale oil, shale gas, and shale gas-condensate reservoirs, respectively. In each set of experiments, we study geomechanical deformation and consequent multi-phase flow factors that reduce effective hydrocarbon permeability that in turn results in early production loss in the above-mentioned unconventional reservoirs. We examine various types of proppants including regular sand, white sand, resin-coated sand, and ISP ceramic. Different packings of the proppants including multi-layer, uniform mono-layer, and non-uniform mono-layer, are also tested under severe closure stress conditions. For the first time, wettability alteration of proppant packs due to severe embedment and deposition of shale organic matter is reported at the pore scale. Significantly improved insight developed in this work can be used to design new proppants to effectively maintain hydraulic conductivity of the fractures for extended period of time.
