Simple variable amplitude loading spectra were applied to test samples, and the crack propagation stress intensity factor, KPR, was subsequently measured. The data were condensed to two equations ("master curves") that describe the influence of an unloading cycle after constant amplitude loading and a single overload cycle, respectively. The results suggest that load interaction effects are caused by residual compressive stresses ahead of the crack front, whereas the influence of crack closure is minor.

Book excerpt: The importance of delay (or, retardation in the rate of fatigue crack growth) produced by load interactions in variable-amplitude loading on the accurate prediction of fatigue lives of aircraft and other engineering structures has been recognized for some time and has begun to receive greater attention in recent years. Recent investigations showed that the effects of delay can be quite large, and that these effects need to be taken into account in developing improved fatigue analysis procedures for aircraft and other engineering structures. A number of models (based on the concepts of crack closure, residual stress intensity factor, etc.) have been proposed to account for the effects of delay. These models, while successfully predicting trends in the rate of fatigue crack growth for randomized load spectra, appear to break down for ordered spectra. Several basic problems contributed to the lack of complete success, and needs to be resolved in the development of improved models for predicting load interaction effects (chiefly delay) on fatigue crack growth.

Book excerpt: A study was conducted to explore some of the load and temperature interaction effects on the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) of polycrystalline superalloy IN100. Load interaction testing in the form of single overloads was performed at 316° C and 649° C. Temperature interaction testing was performed by cycling between 316° C and 649° C in blocks of 1, 10, and 100 cycles. After compiling a database of constant temperature, constant amplitude FCGR for IN100, fatigue crack growth predictions assuming no load or temperature interactions were made. Experimental fatigue crack propagation data were then compared with these predictions to assess interaction effects. The fracture mechanisms observed during interaction testing using a scanning electron microscope were compared with the mechanisms present during constant temperature, constant amplitude testing. Overload interaction testing led to full crack retardation at 2.0 x overloads for both 316° C and 649° C testing. Overloading by 1.6 x at both temperatures led to retarded crack growth, whereas 1.3 x overloads at 649° C created accelerated crack growth and at 316° C the crack growth was retarded. One block alternating temperature interaction testing grew significantly faster than the non-interaction prediction, while 10 block alternating temperature interaction testing also grew faster but not to the same extent. One hundred block alternating testing grew slower than non-interaction predictions. Possible explanations for the interaction effects responsible for the observed crack growth acceleration and retardation are discussed.

The transferability of fatigue laws, determined under constant amplitude loading, to variable amplitude fatigue requires at least an additional variable, whose evolution with crack length accounts for the interaction effects between cycles of different types. The crack opening level (Kop) is usually employed for this purpose because it can be determined from the experiments and compared with predictions from models or FEM analyses. This paper presents an analysis of fatigue crack growth on M(T) specimens of medium carbon steel specimens and using FEM analyses. The specimens are subjected to repeated blocks of cycles made up of one or several overloads separated by a variable number of baseline cycles. The experiments are simulated by FEM analyses, taking into account the cyclic plastic behavior of the low carbon steel. The main objective of this study is to better understand the mechanisms at the origin of interactions effects due to the presence of overloads (or underloads) at different locations of the block loading. It is concluded that the interaction effects are closely related to the cyclic plastic behavior of the material and namely to the Bauschinger effect.
