Book Synopsis Drip Irrigation for Agriculture by : Jean-Philippe Venot
Download or read book Drip Irrigation for Agriculture written by Jean-Philippe Venot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially associated with hi-tech irrigated agriculture, drip irrigation is now being used by a much wider range of farmers in emerging and developing countries. This book documents the enthusiasm, spread and use of drip irrigation systems by smallholders but also some disappointments and disillusion faced in the global South. It explores and explains under which conditions it works, for whom and with what effects. The book deals with drip irrigation 'behind the scenes', showcasing what largely remain 'untold stories'. Most research on drip irrigation use plot-level studies to demonstrate the technology’s ability to save water or improve efficiencies and use a narrow and rather prescriptive engineering or economic language. They tend to be grounded in a firm belief in the technology and focus on the identification of ways to improve or better realize its potential. The technology also figures prominently in poverty alleviation or agricultural modernization narratives, figuring as a tool to help smallholders become more innovative, entrepreneurial and business minded. Instead of focusing on its potential, this book looks at drip irrigation-in-use, making sense of what it does from the perspectives of the farmers who use it, and of the development workers and agencies, policymakers, private companies, local craftsmen, engineers, extension agents or researchers who engage with it for a diversity of reasons and to realize a multiplicity of objectives. While anchored in a sound engineering understanding of the design and operating principles of the technology, the book extends the analysis beyond engineering and hydraulics to understand drip irrigation as a sociotechnical phenomenon that not only changes the way water is supplied to crops but also transforms agricultural farming systems and even how society is organized. The book provides field evidence from a diversity of interdisciplinary case studies in sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean, Latin America, and South Asia, thus revealing some of the untold stories of drip irrigation.

Book Synopsis Irrigation Efficiency and Water Balance of the Little Wind Unit on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming by : Samantha P. Rosado
Download or read book Irrigation Efficiency and Water Balance of the Little Wind Unit on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming written by Samantha P. Rosado and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In semi-arid states such as Wyoming that receive 12 inches or less of rainfall annually, supplemental irrigation water is paramount to maintain productive agricultural systems. Anytime water is stored, transported, or distributed, however, only a fraction makes it to its final destination. Assessment and updating of irrigation system efficiency, and infrastructure, is a recognized need on many western reservations. Irrigation efficiency hasn't been quantified for the Little Wind Unit, the largest irrigation system on the Wind River Indian Reservation (WRIR) in Wyoming, since 1994, when investigators found overall irrigation efficiency to be between 35 and 40%, equating to 4,000 to 8,000 acre-feet of water loss during the irrigation season. In this study, two different methods were used to quantify and locate potential water losses in the Little Wind Unit: the calculation of an agricultural water balance and targeted geophysics techniques. A water balance was developed for May through September from 1990 to 2013 to quantify monthly losses and identify long-term changes in the larger system. In addition, GEM2, an electromagnetic geophysical sensor that measures resistivity with depth, was used to determine seepage loss for the main delivery canal. Synoptic flow measurements were used to assess the effectiveness of the GEM2 in mapping and quantifying seepage losses and to calculate conveyance efficiency. The purpose of the research was to generate site-specific information for the WRIR to assess irrigation system water losses for improved irrigation efficiency for a group of irrigation systems that have historically contributed to unsatisfied water demands among water users. Results of the twenty-four year water balance revealed large errors and data gaps associated with the inflows, outflows, diversions, and precipitation data, which made closing the water balance impossible and identified specific needs for better data. Irrigation efficiencies ranged from 50 to 70% for the LWU, but large variability impacts the understanding of irrigation efficiency. Economic assessment showed that in some years more profits could have been realized with better irrigation efficiencies. Irrigation efficiency decreased linearly with increased diversions for the study period, showing no difference in terms of management (diversions) in wet or dry years. Conveyance efficiencies for reaches measured in the main canal of Ray were greater than 85%. Based on the results, greater temporal and spatial distribution data are needed to fully assess irrigation system performance, in order to make agriculture on the Reservation productive and sustainable.
