This literature tends to focus on quot;directquot; spillovers related to the levels of research and development (Ramp;D) produced by the trading partners.Lumenga-Neso, Olarreaga, and Schiff argue that quot;indirectquot; trade-related Ramp;D spillovers also take place between countries even if they do not trade with each other. These indirect spillovers are associated with available (rather than produced) levels of Ramp;D. If Country A imports from Country B and Country B imports from Country C, C could transmit knowledge to Country A even if A does not trade directly with Country C.The authors' empirical results suggest that these indirect trade-related spillovers are at least as important as the direct spillovers and may be more so. The results strengthen the view that trade matters in the international transmission of Ramp;D.The results also suggest that the existence of these indirect effects reduces the importance of bilateral trade patterns as determinants of the level of foreign Ramp;D spillovers through trade.This paper - a product of Trade, Development Research Group - is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the relationship between openness and growth. Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether trade promotes North-South and South-South technology spillovers at the industry level, and how the absorptive capacity of the South affects the impact of the technology spillovers. It uses "effective" instead of "available" trade-related R&D in the South by incorporating human capital as a measure of absorptive capacity, then develops a method to measure the indirect trade-related R&D among the South and its effects on technology spillovers. Iteration and bootstrap methods are used to estimate parameters and their standard errors with data from 16 manufacturing industries in 25 developing countries over the period 1976-1998. Estimation results show that: (i) North-South direct R&D spillovers through trade are substantial, but South-South indirect R&D spillovers are very small; these results are robust both for the pooled data and for each single industry. And (ii) the absorptive capacity in the South is rather low on average, but it has a great potential to increase given one unit increase in their human capital.

Book excerpt: The empirical analysis in "International R&D Spillovers" (Coe and Helpman, 1995) is first revisited by applying modern panel cointegration estimation techniques to an expanded data set that we have constructed for the purpose of this study. The new estimates confirm the key results reported in Coe and Helpman about the impact of domestic and foreign R&D capital stocks on TFP. In addition, we show that domestic and foreign R&D capital stocks have measurable impacts on TFP even after controlling for the impact of human capital. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to include institutional variables, such as legal origin and patent protection, in order to allow for parameter heterogeneity based on a country's institutional characteristics. The results suggest that institutional differences are important determinants of total factor productivity and that they impact the degree of R&D spillovers.

Book excerpt: After many years of rapid expansion, China’s growth is slowing to more sustainable levels and is rebalancing, with consumption becoming the main growth driver. This transition is likely to have negative effects on its trading partners in the near term. This paper studies the potential spillovers to the ASEAN-5 economies through trade, commodity prices, and financial markets. It finds that countries with closer trade linkages with China (Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand) and net commodity exporters (Indonesia and Malaysia) would suffer the largest impact, with growth falling between 0.2 and 0.5 percentage points in response to a decline in China’s growth by 1 percentage point depending on the model used and the nature of the shock. The impact could be larger if China’s slowdown and rebalancing coincides with bouts of global financial volatility. There are also opportunities from China’s rebalancing, both in merchandise and services trade, and there is preliminary evidence that some ASEAN-5 economies are already benefiting from these trends.

Book excerpt: In many countries, a sizable share of international trade is carried out by intermediaries. While large firms tend to export to foreign markets directly, smaller firms typically export via intermediaries (indirect exporting). I document a set of facts that characterize the dynamic nature of indirect exporting using firm-level data from Vietnam and develop a dynamic trade model with both direct and indirect exporting modes and customer accumulation. The model is calibrated to match the dynamic moments of the data. The calibration yields fixed costs of indirect exporting that are less than a third of those of direct exporting, the variable costs of indirect exporting are twice higher, and demand for the indirectly exported products grows more slowly. Decomposing the gains from indirect and direct exporting, I find that 18 percent of the gains from trade in Vietnam are generated by indirect exporters. Finally, I demonstrate that a dynamic model that excludes the indirect exporting channel will overstate the welfare gains associated with trade liberalization by a factor of two.

To address this question, we analyze the effects of tacit knowledge spillovers from Nokia in the context of a quasi-natural experiment in Finland, the closure of Nokia’s mobile device division in 2014 and the massive labor movement it implied. We apply a two-stage difference-in-differences approach with heterogeneous treatment to estimate the causal effects of hiring former Nokia employees. Our results provide new evidence supporting the positive causal role of former Nokia workers on firm performance. The evidence of the positive spillovers on firms is particularly strong in terms of employment and value added.
