Applications include the estimation of technical efficiency in agricultural grazing systems (dairy, beef and mixed) and specifically for dairy farms. The conclusions indicate that it is now necessary to help small dairy farms in order to make them more efficient. These results can be compared with the technical efficiency of a sample of Spanish dairy processing firms presented by Magdalena Kapelko and co-authors.

Compared with previous studies, which mostly focus on industries, this paper focuses on a geographic area instead. By applying the stochastic frontier framework, this paper arrives at four major findings: first, resource-based firms are more technically efficient on average than non-resource-based firms; second, foreign investment is beneficial to the improvement of technical efficiency; third, there is no evidence that ownership affects the technical efficiency of firms in Gansu province; and fourth, bigger firms tend to operate with more technical efficiency than smaller firms.

Attempting to overcome methodological limitations and underlying assumptions of other studies, The Growth Process in East Asian Manufacturing Industries re-examines the role of total factor productivity (TFP) growth and aims to identify the sources of output growth in these East Asian economies. Chia-Hung Sun aims to explain how TFP growth differs from technological progress, and demonstrates why this study favours the use of the varying coefficients frontier model rather than the conventional scholastic frontier approach. He goes on to statistically test whether manufacturing industries in East Asia homogeneously applied the best practice production technology, and investigates the TFP growth slowdown in East Asian manufacturing sectors.

As part of the reform programme, and in line with prevailing economic thinking, India has been privatising its large, ungainly public sector. One assumption underlying this programme is the dogma that public sector enterprises are doomed to inefficiency, and that competitive market forces can be relied on to make firms more efficient once they are privatised. But is this really true? Combining rigorous data analysis with case studies to provide a balanced evaluation of the process of deregulation and privatisation within the overall context of economic reforms, the author demonstrates, remarkably, that, contrary to the prevailing view, private sector firms do not outperform public sector firms across all sectors. He also shows that revenue-raising considerations have weighed more heavily with the government than efficiency objectives. Overall, this study of the reform process in India, with its unique longstanding mix of private and public sectors, will be of great interest to all those studying reform and transition worldwide.
