Book excerpt: In ancient Greece, epiphanies were embedded in cultural production, and employed by the socio-political elite in both perpetuating pre-existing power-structures and constructing new ones. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of the history of divine epiphany as presented in the literary and epigraphic narratives of the Greek-speaking world. It demonstrates that divine epiphanies not only reveal what the Greeks thought about their gods; they tell us just as much about the preoccupations, the preconceptions, and the assumptions of ancient Greek religion and culture. In doing so, it explores the deities who were prone to epiphany and the contexts in which they manifested themselves, as well as the functions (narratives and situational) they served, addressing the cultural specificity of divine morphology and mortal-immortal interaction. Divine Epiphany in Greek Literature and Culture re-establishes epiphany as a crucial mode in Greek religious thought and practice, underlines its centrality in Greek cultural production, and foregrounds its impact on both the political and the societal organization of the ancient Greeks.

Book excerpt: An epiphany is a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple or commonplace occurrence. What greater epiphany than to see the hand and power of God present in our everyday lives and situations? Epiphanies: Insights for Everyday Life is a journey through the commonplace of life's highs and lows seen through eyes of spiritual perception. Allow God to give you insight into your life as He guides you to your destiny through a series of epiphanies. I encourage you to take a few moments and read the beautiful writings of a special friend of mine, Miss Tiffany Anderson. In times like these, words become more delicate and friendships seem rare, but we can find a place of true solitude in just giving ourselves an intimate place to become involved mentally and spiritually with God through words penned by this gifted new writer. Enjoy! - Nancy Harmon of Nancy Harmon Ministries Minister Tiffany Anderson; a phenomenal teacher, student of the Word, and servant of Almighty God; pens this wonderful work entitled, Epiphanies: Insights for Everyday Life. It is exciting to see what began as a daily encourager for friends transform into a book of revelation to the nations. She articulates necessary truths that have the potential to transform the lives of every reader. The concepts are presented with such clarity that it makes it easy to comprehend and apply to one's life. It is my pleasure and honor to recommend this relevant work. I pray that it will be a blessing to your everyday life as it has been to mine. - Pastor Rueben Speight, Greater Destiny International Ministries "Sometimes the big lessons in life flow from the smallest moments. Book excerpt: This volume, the latest contribution to the international Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti (CJH), investigates New Testament and Septuagint descriptions of theophanic interactions with the world. The CJH project aims to improve the understanding of the individual New Testament writings as part of the culture of Hellenistic Judaism. This final volume complements studies on Philo, Josephus, non-textual evidence, and non-canonical pseudepigraphal writings, and focuses on the development of linguistic and theological concepts within and between the LXX and the New Testament. Thematically, the volume considers the possible impact of religious experiences on biblical texts: according to the biblical authors Israel experienced God as speaking and acting on its behalf, occasionally in visible, audible, and tangible ways. Indeed, scripture presents itself as beginning with epiphanies of the divine. Contributors: Andy Angel, Richard H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the book-While scrolling through posts on your social media, do you also stop at a random quote and feel like the universe sent it across just for you?Well, 'Dhi's Oracle of Divine Guidance' is supposed to be just that-a self-help collection of Dhi's (the Author's alter ego and the narrator of her works) musings and epiphanies covering all spheres of life and its range of conflicting emotions that are meant to be flipped through intuitively until you arrive at the one, you're meant to ponder over concerning the situation in your life at the time. The way to use it-With a relaxed frame of mind and your eyes closed, hold this self-help oracle in your hand gently and take a few deep breaths, focusing only on them and emptying your mind of all thoughts. Then proceed to request the universe to speak to you and guide you with what you need to do through this means. Be free and expressive as you do this, not thinking so much about how you're framing your words or how you ought to speak to the 'High Power'. Allow this to be a cathartic experience if you must. There is nothing wrong in being desperate for guidance as long as it's sincere and not done with a mind already made up.Flip through the pages with your eyes still closed and stop when your intuition asks you to-don't second guess it. The epiphany you'll thus arrive at, will be what the universe will want you to mull over in terms of where you're at in your life and will require you to introspect honestly, without trying to justify or vilify yourself before the universe. The universe has no ulterior motive in making you believe what isn't true, so denial won't support the divine guidance.Let Dhi assist you on your personal journey.

Each of us has traumas, triggers, and painful experiences that have shaped our existence in this world. We carry these burdens with us as we navigate the realities of our lives. Learning to embody the truth of imago Dei is our catalyst for healing. We are each made in the image of God, and the Spirit of God lives within us. Therefore, we are allowed to listen to our Spirit. We are invited to develop our own Divine intuition, and we are empowered to trust our inner voice. We don't need anyone else's permission to navigate our life and faith, except our own. With the powerful voice of a woman, pastor, mother, and advocate, Rev. Aurelia Dávila Pratt gives us the compassionate nudge and tools we need to access our inner authority. By stepping out of harmful belief systems informed by white supremacy and scarcity, we can step into healthy paradigms of abundance, liberation, and power. A Brown Girl's Epiphany is a love letter to all of us in need of guidance on our journey. Honest, vulnerable, and humble, Pratt imagines a world where the walking wounded become the fully healed and liberated, where our inner work becomes the starting point for creating heaven on earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and final volume in a trilogy of prayer manuals compiled by Publishers Weekly religion editor Phyllis Tickle as a contemporary Book of Hours to guide Christians gently yet authoritatively through the daily offices. The Divine Hours is the first major literary and liturgical reworking of the sixth-century Benedictine Rule of fixed-hour prayer. This beautifully conceived and thoroughly modern three-volume guide will appeal to the theological novice as well as to the ecclesiastical sophisticate. Making primary use of the Book of Common Prayer and the writings of the Church Fathers, The Divine Hours is also a companion to the New Jerusalem Bible, from which it draws its Scripture readings. The trilogy blends prayer and praise in a way that, while extraordinarily fresh, respects and builds upon the ancient wisdom of Christianity. The third and final book in the set, Prayers for Springtime, provides prayers, psalms, and readings for this season associated with rebirth. Compact, it is perfect for those seeking greater spiritual depth. As a contemporary Book of Hours, The Divine Hours: Prayers for Springtime heralds a renewal of the tradition of disciplined daily prayer, and gives those already using the first two volumes the completion they are seeking. With this volume, the series culminates with three prayer manuals encompassing the liturgical and calendar year with the offices for every day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores religious epiphanies in which there is the appearance of God, a god or a goddess, or a manifestation of the divine or religious reality as received in human experience. Drawing upon the scriptures of various traditions, ancillary religious writings, psychological and anthropological studies, as well as reports of epiphanic experiences, the book presents and examines epiphanies as they have occurred across global religious traditions and cultures, historically and up to the present day. Primarily providing a study of the great range of epiphanies in their phenomenal presentation, Kellenberger also explores issues that arise for epiphanies, such as the matter of their veridicality (whether they are truly of or from the divine) and the question of whether all epiphanies are of the same religious reality.

Book excerpt: ‘Our greatest blessings come to us by way of mania, provided it is given us by divine gift,’ – says Socrates in Plato’s Phaedrus. Certain forms of alteration of consciousness, considered to be inspired by supernatural forces, were actively sought in ancient Greece. Divine mania comprises a fascinating array of diverse experiences: numerous initiates underwent some kind of alteration of consciousness during mystery rites; sacred officials and inquirers attained revelations in major oracular centres; possession states were actively sought; finally, some thinkers, such as Pythagoras and Socrates, probably practiced manipulation of consciousness. These experiences, which could be voluntary or involuntary, intense or mild, were interpreted as an invasive divine power within one’s mind, or illumination granted by a super-human being. Greece was unique in its attitude to alteration of consciousness. From the perspective of individual and public freedom, the prominent position of the divine mania in Greek society reflects its acceptance of the inborn human proclivity to experience alteration of consciousness, interpreted in positive terms as god-sent. These mental states were treated with cautious respect, and in contrast to the majority of complex societies, ancient and modern, were never suppressed or pushed to the cultural and social periphery.
