Book Synopsis Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus by : Sophie Hohmann
Download or read book Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus written by Sophie Hohmann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the final collapse of the Soviet Union, the so-called 'last empire', in 1991, the countries of Central Asia - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan - and of the Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia - became independent nations. These countries, previously production centres under the socialist planning system of the Soviet Union, have made enormous economic adjustments in order to develop - or attempt to develop - along capitalist lines. As this study will show, however, inequality in Central Asia and the Caucasus is widening, as the Soviet systems of healthcare and state provisions disappear. Rejecting the Cold War-era East/West paradigm often used to analyse the development of these nations, this study analyses development along the North-South lines which characterise the migration patterns and poverty levels of much of the rest of the developed world. This opens up new avenues of research, and helps us understand why it is, for instance, that this region is better characterised as a 'new South' - as skilled workers flood out of the territories and into Russia and Western Europe. Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus draws together detailed analyses of the development of migration economics as the region's oil wealth further enhances its strategic and economic importance to Russia, the US, the Middle East and to the EU.

Book Synopsis Paris: A Curious Traveler's Guide by : Eleanor Aldridge
Download or read book Paris: A Curious Traveler's Guide written by Eleanor Aldridge and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh approach to visiting the “city of love” In the last few years, Paris has undergone a huge transformation. It’s fostered one of the coolest creative scenes in Europe, some of the continent’s best nightlife, and a “bistronomy” movement that has influenced dining around the globe. Yet while millennial travelers pour into the city, travel guides continue to focus on a staid checklist approach to Paris’s big attractions. There’s currently no book on the market aimed at younger (perhaps more budget-conscious) American visitors that truly captures the city’s revived energy—until this one. A Curious Traveler’s Guide to Paris will direct readers to the best paintings in the Centre Pompidou and tell them how to beat the lines at the Orangerie. It will guide them to quirky, little-known museums and secret squares. It will tell them how to find the city’s coolest speakeasies, best neo- bistros, and most unusual boutiques. Informative yet opinionated, it is an insider’s guide to Paris without pretension.

Book Synopsis Franco-Americans in Massachusetts by : Edith Szlezák
Download or read book Franco-Americans in Massachusetts written by Edith Szlezák and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the United States of America, French is of importance in only two areas, Louisiana and New England, the latter often being referred to as the Québec d'en bas for its high number of French-Canadian immigrants. Among the six states that constitute New England, Massachusetts is the one that attracted most of them, Québécois as well as Acadiens. Despite the high number of citizens of French-Canadian origin and the proximity to Canada, French has been losing ground as a langue du foyer in all of New England but especially in the southern part. This sociolinguistic study concentrates on the process of language decay among the French-Canadian population of Massachusetts. Based on a corpus consisting of 87qualitative interviews and a quantitative questionnaire survey of 392 questionnaires in 7 areas (covering the centers of French-Canadian immigration throughout Massachusetts),this study approaches the topic in a new, broader angle by encompassing the following aspects: ananalysis of U.S. Census data on ancestry and language use, an overview of the history of French-Canadian presence in Massachusetts, various specificities of the varieties of Canadian French spoken there, as well as ananalysis of the extralinguistic factors, such as the heterogeneity of the French-speaking population, and the intralinguistic consequences, such as unskilled code-switching,of language decay.
