Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an extensive survey of previous literature dealing with the provenance of the song in Deuteronomy 32, a renewed discussion of its text and language as well as an analysis of its poetic structure with the help of a new method. The author tests the tenability of older theories and proposes a new theory based on systematic research into the intertextual links with other parts of the Hebrew Bible and extra-biblical literature of the Ancient Near East. Separate sections are dedicated to the song's descriptions of the relationship between YHWH and the gods and to the identity of the hostile people to which the song refers. The author concludes that a pre-exilic date is extremely likely for the song in its entirety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathan MacDonald examines the term 'monotheism' and its appropriateness as a category for analysing the Old Testament. He traces the use of 'monotheism' since its coinage in 1660 and argues that its use in Old Testament scholarship frequently reflects a narrowed, intellectualistic conception of religion."Finally, MacDonald's volume is a valuable contribution to the discussion because it is also a fine example of biblical theology, a truly insightful exposition of some of the significant themes in the book of Deuteronomy, accompanied by a fine, detailed exposition of crucial passages in the book. [...] This book is highly recommended for all who are interested in the debate concerning biblical monotheism and the larger study of Israel's religious identity."Robert Gnuse in Biblica, Vol. 86 (2005), No. 4, 558-560"This is one of the most significant and exciting books of biblical theology I have read for some time, illustrating how the Bible can come to life when critical attention is paid to the contemporary context of its interpretation."Philip Jenson in Themelios, Vol. 29 (2004), No. 2, 56-57

It is a collection of censuses, laws, and traditions concerning the sojourn of the people of Israel in the wilderness and of the first conquests of the territories promised to Israel. Yet it also carries narrative of notable events and lessons. Both aspects of Numbers benefit from their development in these targums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophet Joseph Patrick Oyone Meye brings enlightenment on Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and the Redemption of humanity as I offer insights in this book Divine Model. In the attempts to win Men’s heart to Christ and to others, build a studier faith. We elaborates on the salvation that Jesus made available to mankind by dying on the Cross, bringing redemption from sin and a means back to God the Father. We explain how redemption “works,” and how the Ultimate Sacrifice brought it about, in order to fully grasp the importance of that Sacrifice and our Redemption. Here, sin and death, the origin and consequences are explained in contrast to Lord Jesus’ life restoring sacrifice. As Christ had been the binding golden thread between the seemingly estranged Old and New Testaments of the Bible, We begins our elucidation with the Old Covenant Mosaic Laws, Rituals Sacrifices, the Tabernacle, and various significant Feasts, outlines the salient points of the history of God’s chosen people (the Jews), and transitions towards the New Covenant and Jesus’ role in the seamless fusion of the two Biblical divisions. In the process, you will come to realize the full impact of Christ’s sacrifice of Himself on our salvation and restoration to God’s favor. Ultimately, We point out how the Lord Jesus Christ becomes the Divine Model, the highest example for humankind in living a life that is the most pleasing to the Father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard theory of Old Testament canon formation describes a literary process of linear development in three successive stages. In spite of intermittent criticism, the theory has continued to find its place in textbooks and introductions. Here Stephen B. Chapman marshals all of the important counter-arguments to the theory and proposes a fresh way to conceive of the canonical process, based upon evidence internal and external to the biblical text.He argues against the standard theory by exposing its internal inconsistencies and critiquing its methodological presuppositions, especially its assumptions about human agency and the nature of 'canonization.' Using Charles Altieri's literary application of Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor's theory of the self, the author redescribes the canonization of the Old Testament as a process of 'strong evaluation', whose goal was to provide a religious framework for the evaluation of personal and communal alternatives, rather than the imposition of ideology. He redefines the Old Testament 'canon' as the theological 'grammar' formed by the coordination of discrete scriptures into a coherent collection, but retaining their plurality as integral to canonicity.Stephen B. Chapman also demonstrates that the status of the prophetic writings prior to their canonization has remained an intractable problem for the standard theory. He shows how nomistic assumptions about canonization have sustained the view that the prophetic corpus was always subordinate to the Pentateuch, even though this view is at odds with the exegetical evidence. By detailed analysis of 'canon-conscious' editing within the Pentateuch and the prophetic corpus, he illustrates how collections of Law and Prophets developed simultaneously and mutually influenced each other.
