Book excerpt: While Mark Twain remains one of our most quintessentially American writers, the actual boyhood experiences that fueled his most enduring literature remained largely unexplored—until now. Twain's early years were a decidedly un-innocent time, marked by deaths of friends and family and his father's bankruptcy. Twain dealt with those personal tragedies through humor and the tall tale. From the time that a ten-year-old Samuel Clemens lit out on his own and boarded his first Mississippi steamer to his first encounter with a traveling "mesmerizer" (which ignited his lifelong penchant for acting and spectacle), from the brooding sense of guilt and fear of eternal damnation inculcated into him at church to the superstitions and stories of witchcraft he learned from the blacks on his farm, Powers unforgettably shows how Mark Twain was shaped by the distinctly American landscape, culture, and people of Hannibal, Missouri. Jay Parini, the celebrated biographer of Robert Frost, called Dangerous Water "a long-needed evocation of the boyhood of the man who invented boyhood for all time. . . . An immensely shrewd and deeply engaging book, a great gift to all of us who love Twain."

Finn has no doubt that the corpse he found while diving was a victim of foul play ? just as there's no doubt that he wants Holly. Now the two will have to come together to outwit a criminal who's already gotten away with murder.

A World War II German U-boat commander is asked to lend his expertise in hunting down this submarine. He coaches the officers about the sub’s possible maneuvers to attack their frigate. Navy frigate USS Barbey is selected to search for the sub. However, with just a skeleton crew, the frigate is plagued with mishaps, including torpedoes fired by the submarine they seek. A Chinese destroyer gets involved demanding the release of the submarine. Naval tensions rise between the destroyer and the frigate. A nearby New Zealand frigate fires a salvo and the Chinese leave the area. The skipper of the USS Barbey is promoted to Captain and sent on another mission advising an Indonesian frigate demanding the Chinese leave one of their islands. A naval battle ensues. Filled with intrigue and excitement, On Dangerous Water is a story of adventure as battling naval ships fight for their right to own the untamable high seas.

Book excerpt: For David Philpott, a successful middle-aged land-developer, the rebellion against his "perfect" life begins innocently enough with his decision to buy a bicycle. Soon he is cycling several miles a day before breakfast; then he decides to bicycle to his annual Florida vacation. The next stop is riding across Canada. This bike journey only whets Philpott's appetite for adventure, however, and soon he becomes preoccupied with the ultimate challenge: a solo sail around the world. From Halifax he sails to Bermuda, the Caribbean, and then out into the Atlantic. During the endless days on the water, Philpott goes back over his life, his attitudes, his accomplishments and dissatisfactions, in a rite of passage that turns into catastrophe when a storm wrecks his boat, leaving him helpless and drifting, running out of food and water, and coming to grips with the increasing certainty that he will die alone at sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first documented moves to claim and administer some of these far-flung islands took place during the early nineteenth century. The Spanish, as the colonial power in the Philippines, undertook occasional surveys of Scarborough Shoal from 1800 onward. Spain never made a formal declaration of sovereignty over the feature but included it on some maps as part of the Philippine archipelago. Emperor Gia Long, who founded the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam, declared sovereignty over the Paracel Islands in 1816. Prior to that, Vietnamese authorities had been officially sanctioning salvage operations in the islands for several decades. Vietnam continued to make occasional use of the islands during the 1830s and 1840s, after which official interest lapsed. In 1843, Captain Richard Spratly aboard the British whaler Cyrus claimed to be the first to discover the island that bears his name. Eventually the entire island group would come to be known as the Spratlys. The British East India Company had been conducting surveys of the islands from the late eighteenth century and in 1868, the British Admiralty compiled the results of those efforts into a new nautical chart of the South China Sea. That map displayed nine distinct islands and reefs in the western portion of the grouping, including Spratly Island itself. In the east, it showed a largely empty expanse of water dotted with reefs whose existence could not be confirmed. The chart labeled this area "Dangerous Ground," a nickname it still bears. The map was revised in 1881 and reproduced by nearly every country with an interest in the South China Sea, including the United States. It would remain the standard chart of the area until the 1950s. No government showed much interest in the islands themselves until 1877 when the British colonial authorities in Labuan, North Borneo registered a claim to Spratly Island and Amboyna Cay on behalf of London. Those two features were listed as possessions by the British Colonial Office from 1891 to 1933, though the British never vigorously pursued the claim. Despite later revisionism, Qing Dynasty documents and actions show that Chinese officials considered Hainan Island to be the southernmost limit of their authority. There is no record of any Chinese objections to Gia Long's annexation of the Paracels or subsequent Vietnamese activity there. When German and Japanese ships carrying insured British copper wrecked on the islands in 1895 and 1896, Chinese authorities foreswore any responsibility for them. Chinese fishers had salvaged the wrecks, prompting the insurance company to demand compensation from those responsible. This was transmitted through the United Kingdom's embassy in Beijing and its consul in Hoihow (modern Haikou). In response, Chinese officials in Liangguang-supervising Guangxi and Guangdong provinces, including Hainan-insisted the islands were unclaimed as far as they were concerned"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Be Dammed is an alarming reminder of the high stakes in the management—and perils in the mismanagement—of water in the western United States. It seems deceptively simple: even when clear evidence was available that the Colorado River could not sustain ambitious dreaming and planning by decision-makers throughout the twentieth century, river planners and political operatives irresponsibly made the least sustainable and most dangerous long-term decisions. Arguing that the science of the early twentieth century can shed new light on the mistakes at the heart of the over-allocation of the Colorado River, authors Eric Kuhn and John Fleck delve into rarely reported early studies, showing that scientists warned as early as the 1920s that there was not enough water for the farms and cities boosters wanted to build. Contrary to a common myth that the authors of the Colorado River Compact did the best they could with limited information, Kuhn and Fleck show that development boosters selectively chose the information needed to support their dreams, ignoring inconvenient science that suggested a more cautious approach. Today water managers are struggling to come to terms with the mistakes of the past. Focused on both science and policy, Kuhn and Fleck unravel the tangled web that has constructed the current crisis. With key decisions being made now, including negotiations for rules governing how the Colorado River water will be used after 2026, Science Be Dammed offers a clear-eyed path forward by looking back. Understanding how mistakes were made is crucial to understanding our contemporary problems. Science Be Dammed offers important lessons in the age of climate change about the necessity of seeking out the best science to support the decisions we make.

Orr has cleared his. He will enhance the perception of his readers.” —Harold Bloom “A poetry critic and poet himself, David Orr’s work often explores a gray area of literary professionalism and process. A columnist for the New York Times Book Review. . . . Orr shows himself to be a reader interested in cutting through noise, particularly with the realities of writing and publishing in a popular culture.” —Ploughshares In his wry debut collection of poetry, celebrated critic David Orr ponders the dark underworld of the ordinary, as he traverses the suburban gothic landscape of modern America. Orr finds and names what’s at the core of being human: sorrow, kindness, familial love, and memory. The poems are playful, fashioned of fables, familiar objects, and the supernatural, inviting every reader to enter in. From “The Abduction”: . . . Later, he would wake each night screaming In helpless confusion, but at the time There was just the sun, the beach, the sun, the saltwater And dark forms being kind. Only a month After the incident, having lost the skill Of knowing what was real, he walked Into headlights he had thought were his wife. David Orr teaches at Rutgers University in addition to serving as the poetry columnist for the New York Times Book Review. A native of South Carolina, he lives in Princeton, New Jersey.
