Book Synopsis "Liberty to the Downtrodden" by : Matthew J. Grow
Download or read book "Liberty to the Downtrodden" written by Matthew J. Grow and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas L. Kane (18221883), a crusader for antislavery, womens rights, and the downtrodden, rose to prominence in his day as the most ardent and persuasive defender of Mormons religious liberty. Though not a Mormon, Kane sought to defend the much-reviled group from the Holy War waged against them by evangelical America. His courageous personal intervention averted a potentially catastrophic bloody conflict between federal troops and Mormon settlers in the now nearly forgotten Utah War of 185758. Drawing on extensive, newly available archives, this book is the first to tell the full story of Kanes extraordinary life. The book illuminates his powerful Philadelphia family, his personal life and eccentricities, his reform achievements, his place in Mormon history, and his career as a Civil War general. Further, the book revises previous understandings of nineteenth-century reform, showing how Kane and likeminded others fused Democratic Party ideology, anti-evangelicalism, and romanticism.

Download or read book Live in Liberty written by Daniel Bush and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systemic problem plagues the local and global church: we habitually lose the gospel. The gospel has been equated with everything from personal prosperity to laws for virtuous living. But all such perceptions paralyze the mission of the church, which is aimed at finding true abundant and joyful life in Christ. In Galatians, the Apostle Paul engages in a passionate defense of the gospel. It may be a short book, but the consequences of its teaching are truly enormous. Martin Luther found such joy and peace in its pages that he said, "The Epistle to the Galatians is my epistle. To it I am as it were in wedlock. It is my Katherine"--Luther's beloved wife. The critical message of Galatians takes us into the heart of an experience--the enjoyment of God's presence and everlasting peace--one which sets us free to love and be loved. In Live in Liberty, Daniel Bush and Noel Due bring out the spiritual message of Paul's words, helping you apply it to your mind and soul so that you may experience the liberating presence of God. Also included is a study guide by Lee Beckham.--Publisher description.

Book Synopsis Freedom and Its Betrayal by : Isaiah Berlin
Download or read book Freedom and Its Betrayal written by Isaiah Berlin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These celebrated lectures constitute one of Isaiah Berlin's most concise, accessible, and convincing presentations of his views on human freedom—views that later found expression in such famous works as "Two Concepts of Liberty" and were at the heart of his lifelong work on the Enlightenment and its critics. When they were broadcast on BBC radio in 1952, the lectures created a sensation and confirmed Berlin’s reputation as an intellectual who could speak to the public in an appealing and compelling way. A recording of only one of the lectures has survived, but Henry Hardy has recreated them all here from BBC transcripts and Berlin’s annotated drafts. Hardy has also added, as an appendix to this new edition, a revealing text of "Two Concepts" based on Berlin’s earliest surviving drafts, which throws light on some of the issues raised by the essay. And, in a new foreword, historian Enrique Krauze traces the origin of Berlin’s idea of negative freedom to his rejection of the notion that the creation of the State of Israel left Jews with only two choices: to emigrate to Israel or to renounce Jewish identity.

Book Synopsis On Ordered Liberty by : Samuel Gregg
Download or read book On Ordered Liberty written by Samuel Gregg and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Ordered Liberty goes beyond the liberal and conservative divide, asking its readers to think about the proper ends of human choice and actions in a free society. Beginning with the insights of Alexis de Tocqueville and some natural law sources, author Samuel Gregg suggests that integral law must be distinguished from most contemporary visions of freedom. This requires, he believes, a complete repudiation of utilitarian ideas as incompatable with human nature and further analysis of the basic but often neglected-question: what is man?
Book Synopsis Cultivating Race by : Watson W. Jennison
Download or read book Cultivating Race written by Watson W. Jennison and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the eighteenth century to the eve of the Civil War, Georgia's racial order shifted from the somewhat fluid conception of race prevalent in the colonial era to the harsher understanding of racial difference prevalent in the antebellum era. In Cultivating Race: The Expansion of Slavery in Georgia, 1750–1860, Watson W. Jennison explores the centrality of race in the development of Georgia, arguing that long-term structural and demographic changes account for this transformation. Jennison traces the rise of rice cultivation and the plantation complex in low country Georgia in the mid-eighteenth century and charts the spread of slavery into the up country in the decades that followed. Cultivating Race examines the "cultivation" of race on two levels: race as a concept and reality that was created, and race as a distinct social order that emerged because of the specifics of crop cultivation. Using a variety of primary documents including newspapers, diaries, correspondence, and plantation records, Jennison offers an in-depth examination of the evolution of racism and racial ideology in the lower South.

Book Synopsis Queen Liberty: The Concept of Freedom in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by : Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz
Download or read book Queen Liberty: The Concept of Freedom in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth written by Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Liberty traces the history of an idea that lay at the foundation of political thought in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and at the same time a certain political myth that formed a core element of Polish noble culture. Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz seeks to trace the evolution of the ideal of “golden liberty” from the state’s creation in the sixteenth century through to the distinctive degeneration of the idea and attempts at resuscitating it in the eighteenth century. She highlights what was different or even odd about the Polish concepts, as well as how they dovetailed into the broader European tradition stretching back to antiquity. This book broadens the European perspective of scholarship on the Republican tradition and presents the fascinating political thought of the ‘Republic of the Two Nations’.
