Book Synopsis The Economic Theory of Product Differentiation by : John Beath
Download or read book The Economic Theory of Product Differentiation written by John Beath and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-02-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few industries in modern market economies that do not manufacture differentiated products. This book provides a systematic explanation and analysis of the widespread prevalence of this important category of products. The authors concentrate on models in which product selection is endogenous. In the first four chapters they consider models that try to predict the level of product differentiation that would emerge in situations of market equilibrium. These market equilibria with differentiated products are characterised and then compared with social welfare optima. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between horizontal and vertical differentiation as well as to the related issues of product quality and durability. This book brings together the most important theoretical contributions to these topics in a succinct and coherent manner. One of its major strengths is the way in which it carefully sets out the basic intuition behind the formal results. It will be useful to advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in industrial economics and microeconomic theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The discrete choice approach provides an ideal framework for describing the demands for differentiated products and can be used for studying most product differentiation models in the literature. By introducing extra dimensions of product heterogeneity, the framework also provides richer models of firm location and product selection."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis How Does Industrialization Affect the Structure of International Trade? the Japanese Experience in the Pacific Basin, 1975-85 by : Sayuri Shirai
Download or read book How Does Industrialization Affect the Structure of International Trade? the Japanese Experience in the Pacific Basin, 1975-85 written by Sayuri Shirai and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-08-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a theoretical model to address the issue of how industrialization affects the structure of international trade. Considering both horizontal and vertical product differentiation, the model shows that intra-industry trade increases when product quality improvement emerges in a developing country and when a difference in relative factor endowments between a developed and a developing countries shrinks. To promote understanding of the conclusions of the model, the paper also uses actual trade data between Japan and Indonesia and between Japan and Korea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Spulber demonstrates how the intermediation theory of the firm explains firm formation by showing why firms arise in a market equilibrium with costly transactions. In addition, the theory helps explain how markets work by.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Industrial Organization by : Luis M. B. Cabral
Download or read book Introduction to Industrial Organization written by Luis M. B. Cabral and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-08-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an issue-driven introduction to industrial organization. Over the past twenty years, the study of industrial organization—the analysis of imperfectly competitive markets—has grown from a niche area of microeconomics to a key component of economics and of related disciplines such as finance, strategy, and marketing. This book provides an issue-driven introduction to industrial organization. It includes a vast array of examples, from both within and outside the United States. While formal in its approach, the book is written in a way that requires only basic mathematical training. Supplemental materials posted on the Web make more extensive use of algebra and calculus.
Book Synopsis Product Differentiation by : Mario Pezzino
Download or read book Product Differentiation written by Mario Pezzino and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goods, even if they satisfy identical needs, are not always identical. At the same time, consumers are not identical either: they can have different income and different preferences regarding product characteristics. Goods are horizontally differentiated when they represent different varieties (e.g. different colours, different designs, etc.) of a certain product. The coloured chairs on the cover of this book are an example of horizontal differentiation. Two products are vertically differentiated instead when one good is of a higher quality compared to the other. If all chairs on the cover were identical in colour, but one of them were of a higher quality, then that would be an example of vertical product differentiation. The objective of the book is to extend the theoretical literature on product differentiation. Specifically, the book addresses the following questions. What are the effects of the introduction of quality standards in a vertically differentiated oligopoly? What are the economics of competition between homogenous and horizontally differentiated products? What is the advertising behaviour of firms when magazines are differentiated platforms to reach consumers?

Book Synopsis The Economics of Tourism Destinations by : Guido Candela
Download or read book The Economics of Tourism Destinations written by Guido Candela and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims at providing an overview of the main economic issues related to tourism activities. While tourism is an important sector, contributing to more than 10% of the European Union’s GDP, research and teaching at the university level has only recently grown to a considerable level, and the field still lacks a firm research methodology. This book approaches tourism economics as an applied field of study in which tourism markets are represented as imperfect markets, with asymmetric and incomplete information among agents, bounded rationality, and with a strong presence of externalities and public goods. The economic issues studied in the book are approached both intuitively, largely using examples and case studies, and formally, with mathematical formalizations in text boxes.
