Book Synopsis Slaves of One Master by : Matthew S. Hopper
Download or read book Slaves of One Master written by Matthew S. Hopper and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging history of the African diaspora and slavery in Arabia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Matthew S. Hopper examines the interconnected themes of enslavement, globalization, and empire and challenges previously held conventions regarding Middle Eastern slavery and British imperialism. Whereas conventional historiography regards the Indian Ocean slave trade as fundamentally different from its Atlantic counterpart, Hopper’s study argues that both systems were influenced by global economic forces. The author goes on to dispute the triumphalist antislavery narrative that attributes the end of the slave trade between East Africa and the Persian Gulf to the efforts of the British Royal Navy, arguing instead that Great Britain allowed the inhuman practice to continue because it was vital to the Gulf economy and therefore vital to British interests in the region. Hopper’s book links the personal stories of enslaved Africans to the impersonal global commodity chains their labor enabled, demonstrating how the growing demand for workers created by a global demand for Persian Gulf products compelled the enslavement of these people and their transportation to eastern Arabia. His provocative and deeply researched history fills a salient gap in the literature on the African diaspora.

Book Synopsis For Men and Elders by : Monica Wilson
Download or read book For Men and Elders written by Monica Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this volume completes with a wealth of case material and against the background of a whole century, Monica Wilson's detailed study of the Nyakyusa-Ngonde people of Tanzania and Malawi. The unusual age-village system for which the Nyakyusa are well known has broken down under the economic presures of the prohibition of cattle raiding, lad shortage and labour migration and the changing values of the 20th century. The book traces the roots of these developments which are parallelled in many parts of Africa and emphasize the zig-zag nature of the path of social change.
Book Synopsis Arab Versus European by : Norman Robert Bennett
Download or read book Arab Versus European written by Norman Robert Bennett and published by Holmes & Meier Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work analyzes competition between followers of two major world religions for mastery of the east central region of Africa. Bennett meticulously traces the process by which European economic and political rivalry with the Muslim rulers of east central Africa became transformed into a holy war against the Arabs. Bennett documents these complex relationships through three stages of their development: the first contacts of Arabs, Europeans, and Africans (1800 to 1870s); the peaceful competition of the 1880s; and the downfall of Zanzibar dominions in the last part of the 19th century.
