Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length book on the major theme of symmetry in graphs. Forming part of algebraic graph theory, this fast-growing field is concerned with the study of highly symmetric graphs, particularly vertex-transitive graphs, and other combinatorial structures, primarily by group-theoretic techniques. In practice the street goes both ways and these investigations shed new light on permutation groups and related algebraic structures. The book assumes a first course in graph theory and group theory but no specialized knowledge of the theory of permutation groups or vertex-transitive graphs. It begins with the basic material before introducing the field's major problems and most active research themes in order to motivate the detailed discussion of individual topics that follows. Featuring many examples and over 450 exercises, it is an essential introduction to the field for graduate students and a valuable addition to any algebraic graph theorist's bookshelf.

He has also had a great influence on the development of algebra, and particularly group theory in China. The present volume consists of a collection of essays on various aspects of group theory written by some of his former students and colleagues in honour of his 80th birthday. The papers contain the main general results, as well as recent ones, on certain topics within this discipline. The chief editor, Zhe-Xian Wan, is a leading algebraist in China.

Book excerpt: This book contains recent contributions to the fields of rigidity and symmetry with two primary focuses: to present the mathematically rigorous treatment of rigidity of structures and to explore the interaction of geometry, algebra and combinatorics. Contributions present recent trends and advances in discrete geometry, particularly in the theory of polytopes. The rapid development of abstract polytope theory has resulted in a rich theory featuring an attractive interplay of methods and tools from discrete geometry, group theory, classical geometry, hyperbolic geometry and topology. Overall, the book shows how researchers from diverse backgrounds explore connections among the various discrete structures with symmetry as the unifying theme. The volume will be a valuable source as an introduction to the ideas of both combinatorial and geometric rigidity theory and its applications, incorporating the surprising impact of symmetry. It will appeal to students at both the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as post docs, structural engineers and chemists.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide in depth coverage of selected areas of graph theory, and throughout the focus is mainly on symmetry properties of graphs. Standard topics on graph automorphisms are presented early on, while in later chapters, more specialised topics are tackled, such as graphical regular representations and pseudosimilarity. The four final chapters are devoted to the reconstruction problem, and here greater emphasis is given to those results that involve the symmetry of graphs. As much as possible, the authors have tried to present results and proofs which are not often to be found in textbooks. Any student who has mastered the contents of this book will be well prepared for current research in many aspects of the theory of graph automorphisms and the reconstruction problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is convergent consensus among scientists that many social, economic and ?nancial phenomena can be described by a network of agents and their inter- tions. Surprisingly, even though the application ?elds are quite different, those n- works often show a common behaviour. Thus, their topological properties can give useful insights on how the network is structured, which are the most “important” nodes/agents, how the network reacts to new arrivals. Moreover the network, once included into a dynamic context, helps to model many phenomena. Among the t- ics in which topology and dynamics are the essential tools, we will focus on the diffusion of technologies and fads, the rise of industrial districts, the evolution of ?nancial markets, cooperation and competition, information ?ows, centrality and prestige. The volume, including recent contributions to the ?eld of network modelling, is based on the communications presented at NET 2006 (Verbania, Italy) and NET 2007 (Urbino, Italy); offers a wide range of recent advances, both theoretical and methodological, that will interest academics as well as practitioners. Theory and applications are nicely integrated: theoretical papers deal with graph theory, game theory, coalitions, dynamics, consumer behavior, segregation models and new contributions to the above mentioned area. The applications cover a wide range: airline transportation, ?nancial markets, work team organization, labour and credit market.

Book excerpt: A graph X is said to be integral if all eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of X are integers. This property was first defined by Harary and Schwenk who suggested the problem of classifying integral graphs. Since the general problem of classifying integral graphs seemed too difficult, graph theorists started to investigate special classes of graphs which included trees, graphs of bounded degree, regular graphs and Cayley graphs. What proves so interesting about this problem is that no one can yet identify what the integral trees are or which 5-regular graphs are integral. In this thesis, integral Cayley graphs are studied. Several topics on the integral Cayley graphs are presented. First, a classification of integral Cayley graphs over abelian groups in terms of the associated Boolean algebra of the subgroups is presented. Secondly, the notions of character and representation integrality are introduced. It has been shown that character integrality is a weaker notion than representation integrality. An internal classification of character integral subsets is proved. General results about representation integral subsets are presented and in an attempt to generalize the results from abelian to non-abelian case, Hamiltonian and dihedral groups are studied. Thirdly, two open problems about integrality of Cayley graphs are solved. Simple eigenvalues in Cayley graphs are studied, and some observations lead to two interesting results in this topic. Finally, the classification of cubic and 4-regular integral Cayley graphs are presented. A general approach to characterize all integral Cayley graphs over abelian groups is presented. Furthermore, a sharp upper bound over the size of the group in terms of the graph degree has been suggested and proved. The thesis concludes with a section devoted to open problems and conjectures in this area.
