Book Synopsis Education And The Struggle For Democracy by : Carr, Wilfred
Download or read book Education And The Struggle For Democracy written by Carr, Wilfred and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade there has been a series of radical changes to the educational system of England and Wales. This book argues that any serious study of these changes has to engage with complex questions about the role of education in a modern liberal democracy. Were these educational changes informed by the needs and aspirations of a democratic society? To what extent will they promote democratic values and ideals? These questions can only be adequately addressed by making explicit the political ideas and the underlying philosophical principles that have together shaped the English educational system. To this end, the book provides a selective history of English education which exposes the connections between decisive periods of educational change and the intellectual and political climate in which it occurred. It also connects the educational policies of the 1980s and 90s to the political ideas of the New Right in order to show how they are part of a broader political strategy aimed at reversing the democratic advances achieved through the intellectual and political struggles of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book proposes that a democratic educational vision can only effectively be advanced by renewing the 'struggle for democracy' - the historical struggle to create forms of education which will empower all citizens to participate in an open, pluralistic and democratic society.
Book Synopsis The Nature of the Right by : Gill Seidel
Download or read book The Nature of the Right written by Gill Seidel and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume challenges and extends the definition of right and right-wing discourse as traditionally conceived in male scholarship. The eleven papers share a common perspective: a critique of the ideology of 'natural difference' as the basis for oppression of the dominated group. In a radical feminist analysis, the relation of domination between the sexes is seen as central to the projects of the right, in which the constructions of 'nations', 'races' and 'gender' present variations in time and space. In its linking of oppressions, this books makes an important and timely contribution to feminist theory and puts the case for a radical and altogether coherent rethinking of right-wing political space.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Reorganizing Schools by : Stewart Ranson
Download or read book The Politics of Reorganizing Schools written by Stewart Ranson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990. The rapid decline in the birth rate in the 1970s and the resulting fall in school rolls had a dramatic effect on the curriculum, staffing, organization and management of schools. This book focuses on the national and local politics surrounding school closures, amalgamations and the replacement of sixth forms with tertiary colleges. The author illuminates the changing politics of education through an analysis based on research in LEAs including Birmingham and Manchester. He explores the roles of central government, local education authorities and the politics of increased parental choice. The book shows how spare capacity in schools captures the political struggle between those concerned to protect the post-war tradition of educational opportunity for all and the New Right who want to seize the chance to place schools in the market place, expanding consumer choice and public accountability.

Download or read book Consuming Public Services written by Nicholas Deakin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public services are now at the centre of political debate in Britain: the National Health Service, education, housing, transport, social services, planning and the police are all matters of wide public and academic concern. So far the initiative in this debate has come overwhelmingly from the Right. Consuming Public Services offers a response from the Left. It presents a vivid panorama of the range of opportunities and problems that would be thrown up by the introduction of greater user control into Britain's public services. The contributors explore the theme of user control in seven public services that differ widely in character and organization. The editors' introduction sets these discussions in the context of a broader analysis and their concluding essay draws the threads together to provide a wide-ranging yet integrated analysis.

Book Synopsis Genres in the Internet by : Janet Giltrow
Download or read book Genres in the Internet written by Janet Giltrow and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-28 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together for the first time pragmatic, rhetorical, and literary perspectives on genre, mapping theoretical frontiers and initiating a long overdue conversation amongst these methodologies. The diverse approaches represented in this volume meet on common ground staked by Internet communication: an arena challenging to traditional ideas of genre which assume a conventional stability at odds with the unceasing innovations of online discourse. Drawing on and developing new ideas of genre, the research reported in this volume shows, on the contrary, that genre study is a powerful means of testing commonplaces about the Internet world and, in turn, that the Internet is a fertile field for theorising genre.
Book Synopsis Educational Leadership and Antonio Gramsci by : Howard Stevenson
Download or read book Educational Leadership and Antonio Gramsci written by Howard Stevenson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book explores the life and ideas of Italian Marxist theoretician Antonio Gramsci, and argues his work has considerable contemporary relevance when re-considering educational leadership in today’s age of crises. Gramsci’s theory of hegemony has provided an invaluable intellectual resource for those seeking to bring about radical change in the complex context of contemporary capitalist societies. In particular, his focus on the role of organic intellectuals engaging in an ongoing ideological struggle across economic, political and civil society helps to locate his notion of hegemony as a theory of leadership that is deeply rooted in pedagogical processes. This volume focuses on transformatory change both in and through education, reframing traditional notions of educational leadership as educative leadership, in which leadership for change, within and beyond educational institutions, is understood in pedagogical terms. This volume will be of pivotal interest to academics, researchers, and postgraduates in the fields of educational leadership, the sociology of education, and education policy and politics. Practitioners interested in educational leadership and social theory, and those active in social movements, may also find the book of use.
