Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha and Omaha Men I became a resident of Omaha in 1870 and lived here for many years. Here I was married, here our four children were born and here one of them died. After an absence of a number of years, and having sold a newspaper business in Oregon and thus being footloose, I concluded to return to Omaha and publish something of a history of the city I first saw as a boy and when it was a very small community. I found that an exhaustive history of Omaha and Douglas County had just been published by an eastern firm and that my old friend, Attorney Ed. F. Morearty, had recently had published an interesting story of Omaha covering the period of his residence here, from 1880, and hence I modified my plan and concluded to publish a booklet of modest size and at a modest price. I have endeavored to cover the ground in a concise manner and trust that what I have to say will be found of general interest and that it may prove to be of historical value to some extent. In Washington County when I was a boy I knew a man who did quite a business in making wine out of wild grapes gathered on the Elkhorn river. His selling price was a dollar a gallon and when one of the neighbors told him that he could well afford to sell it for less he said: "One gallon one dollar; one dollar one gallon. That is easy to remember. I am not much on figures and if I should charge 85 cents a gallon, for instance, I would get all balled up in making change." So with this publication: One booklet one dollar; one dollar one booklet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Omaha: From the Pioneer Days to the Present Time It will be noticed that the chroniclers used the word South, when it should have been west, and north when it should have been east, with reference to the river as it runs past Omaha. This is easily accounted for by the fact that in those days the Missouri river was generally sup posed to run east and west, or nearly so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of Omaha When Columbus sailed back to Spain, in 1492, and told of the wonderful country he had discovered, men were at first surprised and then anxious to see it for themselves. Spain, France and England were rich and populous countries and one after another fitted out expeditions to explore the new world. These expeditions were placed in charge of brave soldiers who, upon landing, at once claimed possession of the land in the name of the King. The English voyagers laid claim to the middle portion of the Atlantic coast while the French sailors landed further north. These colonies kept increasing in numbers and grad ually pushed their settlements west The French colonists moved toward the southwest and northwest while the Spaniards sailed to both sides of the new continent, some landing on the eastern shore in what is now Florida, while others reached the west shore of Mexico. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha Illustrated: A History of the Pioneer Period and the Omaha of to-Day; Embracing Reliable Statistics and Information, With Over Two Hundred Illustrations, Including Prominent Buildings, Portraits and Sketches of Leading Citizens Through no fault of the publishers there have been a few unavoidable omissions in the matter ofillustrations, both portraits and buildings. Several prominent citizens whose portraits would have made the book more complete, were absent from the city until too late to admit of making engrav ings. The unfinished state of some few buildings, also, of which it was impossible to obtain even comprehensive drawings, rendered it impracticable to have satisfactory cuts made. Book excerpt: For the last fifteen years, Gregory Halpern has been photographing in Omaha, Nebraska, steadily compiling a lyrical, if equivocal, response to the American Heartland. In loosely-collaged spreads that reproduce his construction-paper sketchbooks, Halpern takes pleasure in cognitive dissonance and unexpected harmonies, playing on a sense of simultaneous repulsion and attraction to the place. Omaha Sketchbook is ultimately a meditation on America, on the men and boys who inhabit it, and on the mechanics of aggression, inadequacy, and power.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Men of Nebraska: A Book of Portraits This volume is the initial one of a series, new and unique in design, and is the first effort made to collect in a volume a considerable number of portraits of the citizens who have been foremost in furthering the interests of their county or community. Heretofore all attempts in the direction of securing and preserving the portraits of the worthy ones identified with any section of country has been carried on in such manner and the cost made so great to those who should have been interested, that only a few received representation, and as a portrait record such a volume generally has been of small value. In this work the greatest effort of the publishers has been to make it as complete as possible. Perfection is not claimed for this work, nor can a compilation of this class be made complete, for no matter how painstaking the publishers and their representatives in the field may be, there are influences beyond their power to control that preclude the carrying out of their plans in the fullest. It is with regret that many portraits of worthy and enterprising citizens have been omitted from this volume. Yet this book is representative of the sterling element of the count. But few of the pioneers who during life were active in business and public affairs and who are now numbered with the dead, have been neglected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Omaha; Or Walks and Talks Among the Old Settlers The early history of Omaha is to some extent the early history nof Nebraska, and this 'is true to some degree even in the history of later years. Hence we often hear even now our city referred to, by jealous rivals in our State, as the State of Omaha, and the State as its suburbs. The greater portion of this volume has never before appeared -ih print. Some of it, however, has been published before, but in differ ent shape. My information has been obtained from the very best and most reliable sources - from the old settlers' themselves, from the early legislative journals, and from the early newspapers. For valuable assistance and information I am indebted to Hon. A. J. Hanscom, Hon. A. J. Poppleton, Gen. Estabrook, A. D. Jones, Esq., Byron Reed, Esq., Dr. Miller, John A. Creighton, John T. Bell, Mr. And Mrs. W. P. Snowden, Mrs. W. D. Brown, Judge Porter, Martin Dunham, Thomas Riley, Maj. Armstrong and many other prominent old settlers.
