Book excerpt: For the last fifteen years, Gregory Halpern has been photographing in Omaha, Nebraska, steadily compiling a lyrical, if equivocal, response to the American Heartland. In loosely-collaged spreads that reproduce his construction-paper sketchbooks, Halpern takes pleasure in cognitive dissonance and unexpected harmonies, playing on a sense of simultaneous repulsion and attraction to the place. Omaha Sketchbook is ultimately a meditation on America, on the men and boys who inhabit it, and on the mechanics of aggression, inadequacy, and power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha and Omaha Men I became a resident of Omaha in 1870 and lived here for many years. Here I was married, here our four children were born and here one of them died. After an absence of a number of years, and having sold a newspaper business in Oregon and thus being footloose, I concluded to return to Omaha and publish something of a history of the city I first saw as a boy and when it was a very small community. I found that an exhaustive history of Omaha and Douglas County had just been published by an eastern firm and that my old friend, Attorney Ed. F. Morearty, had recently had published an interesting story of Omaha covering the period of his residence here, from 1880, and hence I modified my plan and concluded to publish a booklet of modest size and at a modest price. I have endeavored to cover the ground in a concise manner and trust that what I have to say will be found of general interest and that it may prove to be of historical value to some extent. In Washington County when I was a boy I knew a man who did quite a business in making wine out of wild grapes gathered on the Elkhorn river. His selling price was a dollar a gallon and when one of the neighbors told him that he could well afford to sell it for less he said: "One gallon one dollar; one dollar one gallon. That is easy to remember. I am not much on figures and if I should charge 85 cents a gallon, for instance, I would get all balled up in making change." So with this publication: One booklet one dollar; one dollar one booklet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis My Omaha Obsession by : Miss Cassette
Download or read book My Omaha Obsession written by Miss Cassette and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Omaha Obsession takes the reader on an idiosyncratic tour through some of Omaha’s neighborhoods, buildings, architecture, and people, celebrating the city’s unusual history. Rather than covering the city’s best-known sites, Miss Cassette is irresistibly drawn to strange little buildings and glorious large homes that don’t exist anymore as well as to stories of Harkert’s Holsum Hamburgers and the Twenties Club. Piecing together the records of buildings and homes and everything interesting that came after, Miss Cassette shares her observations of the property and its significance to Omaha. She scrutinizes land deeds, insurance maps, tax records, and old newspaper articles to uncover a property’s singular story. Through conversations with fellow detectives and history enthusiasts, she guides readers along her path of hunches, personal interests, mishaps, and more. As a longtime resident of Omaha, Miss Cassette is informed by memories of her youth combined with an enduring curiosity about the city’s offbeat relics and remains. Part memoir and part research guide with a healthy dose of colorful wandering, My Omaha Obsession celebrates the historic built environment and searches for the people who shaped early Omaha.
