Book Synopsis Architecture and Spectacle: A Critique by : Gevork Hartoonian
Download or read book Architecture and Spectacle: A Critique written by Gevork Hartoonian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on six leading contemporary architects: Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Bernard Tschumi, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and Steven Holl, this book puts forward a unique and insightful analysis of "neo-avant-garde" architecture. It discusses the spectacle and excess which permeates contemporary architecture in reference to the present aesthetic tendency for image making, but does so by applying the tectonic of theatricality discussed by the 19th-century German architect Gottfried Semper. In doing so, it breaks new ground by opening up a dialogue between the study of the past and the design of the present. The work of each discussed architect is seen as addressing a historiographical problem. To this end, and this is the second important aspect of this book, the chosen buildings are discussed in terms of the thematic of the culture of building (the tectonic of column and wall for example) rather the formal, and this through a discussion that is informed by the latest available theories. Having set the aesthetic implication of the processes of the digitalization of architecture, the book's conclusion highlights "strategies" by which architecture might postpone the full consequences of digitalization, and thus the becoming of architecture as ornament on its own right.
Book Synopsis Libraries, Literatures, and Archives by : Sas Mays
Download or read book Libraries, Literatures, and Archives written by Sas Mays and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not only does the library have a long and complex history and politics, but it has an ambivalent presence in Western culture – both a site of positive knowledge and a site of error, confusion, and loss. Nevertheless, in literary studies and in the humanities, including book history, the figure of the library remains in many senses under-researched. This collection brings together established and up-and-coming researchers from a number of practices – literary and cultural studies, gender studies, book history, philosophy, visual culture, and contemporary art –with an effective historical sweep ranging from the time of Sumer to the present day. In the context of the rise of archive studies, this book attends specifically and meta-critically to the figure of the library as a particular archival form, considering the traits that constitute (or fail to constitute) the library as institution or idea, and questions its relations to other accumulative modes, such as the archive in its traditional sense, the museum, or the filmic or digital archive. Across their diversity, and in addition to their international standard of research and writing, each chapter is unified by commitment to analyzing the complex cultural politics of the library form.

Book excerpt: The International Building Exhibition 1984/87 in Berlin constitutes one of the most remarkable examples to discuss "open architecture". Almost 10,000 dwellings were constructed or restored in the Kreuzberg districts adjacent to the Berlin Wall, inhabited about halfway by immigrants. The renowned author Esra Akcan, related in many ways to Turkey, Berlin and the USA, narrates the history and reverberations of this architectural-political event.

Book Synopsis Building Institution by : Kim Förster
Download or read book Building Institution written by Kim Förster and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: »Building Institution« chronicles the expansion of architecture as a profession and discipline in the postmodern era. Kim Förster traces the compelling history of the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, which was active in New York from 1967 to 1985. Drawing on extensive archival research and oral histories, he constructs a collective biography that details the Institute's diverse roles and the dynamic interplay between research and design, education, culture, and publishing. By exploring the transformation of cultural production into a practice as well as the culturalization and global postmodernization of architecture, the volume contributes significantly to the institutional history of architecture.
Book Synopsis Histories of Architecture Education in the United States by : Peter L. Laurence
Download or read book Histories of Architecture Education in the United States written by Peter L. Laurence and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histories of Architecture Education in the United States is an edited collection focused on the professional evolution, experimental and enduring pedagogical approaches, and leading institutions of American architecture education. Beginning with the emergence of architecture as a profession in Philadelphia and ending with the early work, but unfinished international effort, of making room for women and people of color in positions of leadership in the field, this collection offers an important history of architecture education relevant to audiences both within and outside of the United States. Other themes include the relationship of professional organizations to educational institutions; the legacy of late nineteenth-century design concepts; the role of architectural history; educational changes and trans-Atlantic intellectual exchanges after WWII and the Cold War; the rise of the city and urban design in the architect’s consciousness; student protests and challenges to traditional architecture education; and the controversial appearance of environmental activism. This collection, in other words, provides a relevant history of the present, with topics of concern to all architects studying and working today.
Book Synopsis Resisting Postmodern Architecture by : Stylianos Giamarelos
Download or read book Resisting Postmodern Architecture written by Stylianos Giamarelos and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first appearance in 1981, critical regionalism has enjoyed a celebrated worldwide reception. The 1990s increased its pertinence as an architectural theory that defends the cultural identity of a place resisting the homogenising onslaught of globalisation. Today, its main principles (such as acknowledging the climate, history, materials, culture and topography of a specific place) are integrated in architects’ education across the globe. But at the same time, the richer cross-cultural history of critical regionalism has been reduced to schematic juxtapositions of ‘the global’ with ‘the local’. Retrieving both the globalising branches and the overlooked cross-cultural roots of critical regionalism, Resisting Postmodern Architecture resituates critical regionalism within the wider framework of debates around postmodern architecture, the diverse contexts from which it emerged, and the cultural media complex that conditioned its reception. In so doing, it explores the intersection of three areas of growing historical and theoretical interest: postmodernism, critical regionalism and globalisation. Based on more than 50 interviews and previously unpublished archival material from six countries, the book transgresses existing barriers to integrate sources in other languages into anglophone architectural scholarship. In so doing, it shows how the ‘periphery’ was not just a passive recipient, but also an active generator of architectural theory and practice. Stylianos Giamarelos challenges long-held ‘central’ notions of supposedly ‘international’ discourses of the recent past, and outlines critical regionalism as an unfinished project apposite for the 21st century on the fronts of architectural theory, history and historiography.

Book Synopsis IAUS, the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies by : Suzanne Frank
Download or read book IAUS, the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies written by Suzanne Frank and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a combined memoir and impressionistic history of the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies. At first affiliated with New York's Museum of Modern Art and Cornell University, the Institute housed architects, artists and historians who worked on creative design and intellectual projects and would become world renown. Its creation and direction was in the hands of its able leader, Peter Eisenman. Besides a documentary study of the work that went on there, among an international clearing house, the book is laced with impressions of the author's experience there. It has been in the works for over 12 years and was originally financed by the Graham Foundation for the Study of the Fine Arts and has subsequently been aided by Dr. Jenny Kaufmann. The photographs of the Institute at the height of its activity are included and so does an original ground plan of its West 40th Street office done by Scott Brandi who also designed the book. It ends with 27 interviews of prominent members of the Institute who comment on it and their experiences. The book should appeal to architecture students and those interested in architecture and urbanism of the seventies when the government in the United States was more reasonable in economic and political equity.
Book Synopsis New York Design at Home by : Anthony Iannacci
Download or read book New York Design at Home written by Anthony Iannacci and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic tour through designers’ own spaces, from a Greenwich Village town home to a Park Slope brownstone and beyond. Designers’ homes often serve as laboratories where they are free to experiment. These spaces are filled with the designer’s most personal and cherished objects, furnishings, and artwork that are concentrated expressions of their style and interests. New York Design at Home profiles 27 homes and looks at how these creative professionals—among them David Gresham, Ellen Hanson, Benjamin Pardo, Ariel Ashe, and many more—approach design in their personal space. Like most New York City residents, they are decorating with much smaller budgets than they have on their work projects, but they find creative ways to deal with tiny bathrooms, awkward and unusable kitchens, and shared living spaces. Photographed by Noe DeWitt, New York Design at Home highlights the carefully considered details within each interior—the Pablo Picasso painting reproduced as wallpaper, the kitchen utensils on display, textiles that provide pops of color in an otherwise monochromatic space—and captures the creative essence of these homes with new, never-before-published images.
Book Synopsis Oswald Mathias Ungers and Rem Koolhaas by : Lara Schrijver
Download or read book Oswald Mathias Ungers and Rem Koolhaas written by Lara Schrijver and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lara Schrijver examines the work of Oswald Mathias Ungers and Rem Koolhaas as intellectual legacy of the 1970s for architecture today. Particularly in the United States, this period focused on the autonomy of architecture as a correction to the social orientation of the 1960s. Yet, these two architects pioneered a more situated autonomy, initiating an intellectual discourse on architecture that was inherently design-based. Their work provides room for interpreting social conditions and disciplinary formal developments, thus constructing a `plausible' relationship between the two that allows the life within to flourish and adapt. In doing so, they provide a foundation for recalibrating architecture today.
