A teamster is permitted to enter the freight house and look for such freight, knowing approximately where it is likely to be located. After finding the freight he may then go to the cashier's Office and Obtain a check called a memorandum check, and the freight will be surrendered by the delivery clerk upon presentation Of this check. This system, although it requires the driver to spend more time at the freight house, is Of considerable advantage to consignees in cases Of error on the de livery check or Of delay in the arrival Of the waybill causing the agent's Office delay in making out the delivery check. Time Spent by Wagons in Freight Yards. It was desired first to find the percentage Of the day spent in the freight yards by the average teamster Of large trucking concerns handling miscellaneous freight. Observations made for twenty-one days on the one and two-horse trucks Of two Of the largest master teamsters in the city showed that these wagons spent approximately one-third Of the working day in the freight yards. Figs. 2 and 3 show graphically the results from these Observations. As seen by these plots the teams spent approximately one-third of the working day in the railroad yard. A third firefighter jumped up from his chair to look out a window—“Oh my God!” he shouted to the other men, “Run!” A 50-foot-tall steel tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses had just collapsed on Boston’s waterfront, disgorging its contents as a 15-foot-high wave of molasses that at its outset traveled at 35 miles an hour. It demolished wooden homes, even the brick fire station. The number of dead wasn’t known for days. It would be years before a landmark court battle determined who was responsible for the disaster.

Book excerpt: Daniel Gookin was a pioneering settler who resided in Virginia and Massachusetts, taking an interest in and writing about the Native Americans, toward whom he felt sympathy. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Gookin moved to his father's plantation in Virginia when he was aged only eighteen in 1630. Given a reference to his being a 'souldier', it is assumed that Gookin spent at least part of his youth in the military. Later in life he moved to the colonies of Massachusetts, becoming familiar with these and other lands. Gookin travelled to London on business multiple times, acting to relay information about newly discovered areas, their suitability for settlement, and challenges facing the colonists. Gookin gained distinction for his efforts to build rapport with the Native Americans. He promoted the conversion of natives to Christianity, with the eventual goal of permanent, peaceful coexistence. He also wrote two books about the native populations, and encouraged peace when violent conflicts such as King Philip's War broke out. He was also an early advocate for the lessening British influence upon the colonies. Frederick Gookin published this biography of his ancestor in 1912, piecing together many disparate sources in order to shed light on Daniel's life and deeds.
