Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Saint Paul's, Vol. 3 of 3: A Tale of the Plague and the Fire In less than a week after it had been converted into a pest-house, the cathedral was crowded to overflowing. Upwards Of three hundred pallets were set up in the nave, in the aisles, in the transepts, and in the choir, and even in the chapels. But these proving insufficient, many poor wretches who were brought thither were placed on the cold flags, and protected only by a single blanket. At night the scene was really terrific. The imperfect light borne by the attendants fell on the couches, and revealed the livid countenances Of their occupants; while the vaulted roof rang with shrieks and groans so horrible and heart-piercing as to be scarcely endured, except by those whose nerves were firmly strung, or had become blunted by their constant recurrence. At such times, too, some unhappy creature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Pauls, Vol. 1: A Monthly Magazine; October 1867 to March 1868 Ir may perhaps be allowed to the Editor of a new magazine to address himself personally to his wished-for readers from the rostrum of his first page, and to say a few words on his own behalf and on that of his fellow-labourers, in justification of the enterprise which he and they are commencing. He begs to assure such of the public as will kindly interest them selves in the matter, that the saint pauls magazine is not established, on and from this present 1st of October, 1867, on any rooted and matured conviction that such a periodical is the great and pressing want of the age. He believes that the spirited proprietors of the work are actuated by a belief that the undertaking may be made to be successful and commercially profitable to themselves by a liberal expenditure of capital, and by zeal and care on their part. He thinks that the writers who are joined with himself in the work have under taken their tasks with a double feeling, - that the labourer is worthy of his hir'e, - and that he will be found worthy, also, of praise if his work be well done. He is aware, also, that he will have some with him whose object itwill be to find a vehicle for the expression of the ideas with which they are laden. For himself, he can say, that in becoming the Editor of a new magazine it is his object to work in his profession as a man of letters, successfully, - with credit to himself, if it may be possible, - and with some advantage, if that also may be possible, to those increasing thousands of readers whom the progress of education is producing. The saint pauls magazine is not started because another special publication is needed to satisfy the requirements of the reading world, but because the requirements of the reading world demand that there shall be many such publications to satisfy its needs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell of St. Paul's, Vol. 1 of 2 The lodgers, then, being such as these, came to the bare room because it was cheap and warm. Here there was every night a great fire built up - one that would last from midnight until six in the morning: they had, therefore, warmth. A jet of gas was also burning all night, so that the people had light. The lodgers dropped in one after the other and lay down; soon they grew warm: perhaps they were hungry - well, no great matter, better a hundred nights without supper than one in the cold. The air of the room presently became so foul that it might have reminded the historical student (if any were present) of N ewgate, Ludgate, or the Compter in the old days. They cared nothing for the foul air they were warm. The walls streamed: the floor was hard: the place was crammed: their companions were as wretched as themselves: - but they were warm. In the morning they would have to get up and go out and face the cold again: meantime, they were warm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell of St. Paul's, Vol. 1 of 3 And varied experiences we might be led to expect whole mines of accumulated wisdom and treasures Of sagacity. On examination, however, we find that their experiences have all gone for nothing. Their minds are empty, entirely empty. What they learn one day they forget the next; in fact, they never do learn: they do not put together events and draw conclusions: they pay no heed to the wants and desires Of any but themselves: they know not any past and they look not for any future their ideas on the conduct of life have nothing at all to do with the complex civilisa tion which is around them but does not con tain them.
