Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook to the Bright-Shadow World develops three closely related issues. The first is the position that fairytales and folktales are of value today because they encourage the growth of capabilities important in our postmodern world. Each of us, like the fairytale hero, sets out on his/her own quests, seeks his/her own identity, faces his/her own dilemmas with few resources but wit, imagination, and a certain power of improvisation. King develops the implications of this situation for such common fairytale problems as learning to read the world productively; navigating various kinds of "edges;" exploiting power sources; developing highly personal moral commitments; problem solving; and data collecting. The second concern of this book is with the development of a system for analyzing narrative structure. The formula offered here involves an examination of interactions among actors, physical settings, lines of force, and power sources as a narrative moves toward its denouement. This system facilitates the classifying, and contrasting of narratives, and illuminates the structure of both narrative and lived experience. Finally, this book is concerned with myth-making or world-making processes. It is shown that traditional narrative actually points to and delineates another dimension of existence (here called "the Bright-Shadow World") that operates by rules of its own and may be penetrated by individuals from our ordinary world. Inferences about the Bright-Shadow World drawn from traditional narrative are described and evaluated.

Book excerpt: The former Director of National Intelligence speaks out in this New York Times bestseller When he stepped down in January 2017 as the fourth United States Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper had been President Obama's senior intelligence advisor for six and a half years, longer than his three predecessors combined. He led the US Intelligence Community through a period that included the raid on Osama bin Laden, the Benghazi attack, the leaks of Edward Snowden, and Russia's influence operation on the 2016 U.S election. In Facts and Fears, Clapper traces his career through the growing threat of cyberattacks, his relationships with Presidents and Congress, and the truth about Russia's role in the presidential election. He describes, in the wake of Snowden and WikiLeaks, his efforts to make intelligence more transparent and to push back against the suspicion that Americans' private lives are subject to surveillance. Finally, it was living through Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and seeing how the foundations of American democracy were--and continue to be--undermined by a foreign power that led him to break with his instincts grown through more than five decades in the intelligence profession, to share his inside experience. Clapper considers such controversial questions as, is intelligence ethical? Is it moral to intercept communications or to photograph closed societies from orbit? What are the limits of what we should be allowed to do? What protections should we give to the private citizens of the world, not to mention our fellow Americans? Is there a time that intelligence officers can lose credibility as unbiased reporters of hard truths by asserting themselves into policy decisions? Facts and Fears offers a privileged look inside the United States intelligence community and addresses with the frankness and professionalism for which James Clapper is known some of the most difficult challenges in our nation's history.

With the rising costs of health care and the exponential growth of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and cancer, people are looking for a new way to relate to their bodies in order to optimize health and wellness. Currently many are willing to be more pro-active when it comes to their health, and want to be more responsible for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Documented research now proves that a person's thoughts or emotions can affect the immune system, create muscle pains, and manifest as digestion issues. In these pages, you will learn about the mind-body connection as viewed in the Western medicine and Eastern disciplines. This book is a resource that details an array of health conditions with their presenting symptoms, Western treatment methods, the underlying mental-emotional component, complete with action steps you can take to assist in your healing process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live every day without being aware that fear controls many of our choices and decisions. The consequences our fear-based behavior has on our life and relationships also contributes to the collective fear and distrust in the world. When we recognize fear for what it really is, we can initiate an effort to deal with it. In The Truth About Love and Fear, author Rudolf Eckhardt shows how we can take individual responsibility for our issues by addressing our fears and insecurities. This will transform our lives and the lives of those around us. He provides answers to questions about consciousness, life, and relationships and discusses how life is about being and not about doing; you can be a powerful person, rather than just engaging in acts of power; true change is different from changing your feelings, perception, thoughts, and behaviors; it feels to experience unconditional love; fear and guilt have power; and love and fear influence your mind and control your behavior. The Truth About Love and Fear leads you to a new understanding of the nature of unconditional love, acceptance, and trust and explains the potential of your personal power and the lack of it in your life. It challenges your present way of thinking, makes you question your perception, ad changes your belief of who you are and the way you see your relationships and life. It alters your thoughts of your past, your present, and your future.

Consider them an opportunity to practice new skills with confidence and become empowered as you parent. In Parenting with a Purpose, author Diana R. Boggia shows you how to embrace those moments as she presents strategies to remedy misbehavior, increase self-confidence, and empower you as you learn to take control in a positive way, without yelling or harsh punishment. Culled from her weekly syndicated newspaper parenting column, Family Matters, Boggias guide paves a path for parents, providing practical, easy-to-apply strategies to eliminate daily chaos and resolve behavioral concerns with ease. She discusses how to retrain your child with positive interventions to eliminate confrontations, de-escalate temper tantrums, soothe your child to sleep, or implement a time-out with success, not anger; teach your child to wait patiently while you are on the phone, to pick up after himself, to develop thoughtful manners, and to develop a strong sibling bond, all accomplished while building independence and self-confidence; communicate so your child can understand exactly what you are asking of him; implement the effectiveness of multisensory communication, which can change the dynamics of your entire family. Parenting with a Purpose shows you how to incorporate small changes that will make a difference in your childs life and help you to parent with passion and joy. Anyone can be a parent, but it takes a parent armed with skills and continuous dedication to raise a resilient, thoughtful, self-confident child.
