Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old New England Traits The Editor of this little volume does not deem it incumbent upon him to explain in what way the author's manuscript came into his possession. He hopes it may be enough for him to say, that the writer believed himself to be the only person whose memory retained most of the incidents and anecdotes herein recorded; and a long and familiar acquaintance with his character enables the Editor to state, that entire credence is due to his narrative of facts, written down as occurring within his own knowledge and to his relation of whatever he alleges himself to have derived from others. Book excerpt: Old New England Traits By George Lunt The Editor of this little volume does not deem it incumbent upon him to explain in what way the author's manuscript came into his possession. A slight veil of mystery seems to have been originally thrown over the story; especially in regard to the names of persons; but, as all who are familiar with the locality will at once recognize its general features, the Editor has thought it best, for the benefit of others not so well informed, to make all proper explanations on this point in the Index. Sometimes, New England has been spoken of as devoid of the elements of romance; but perhaps this idea may be owing to the fact, that the means of presenting a different aspect of the case have not been sufficiently investigated. A similar impression has prevailed in respect to Roman history and literature, whether fabulous or otherwise; and the fathers of New England, at least, have been thought to have exhibited some of the traits, especially the simplicity and severity of character, which distinguished those more ancient worthies, whose names and deeds have been so long famous. But without making other citations, I may remark, that I am scarcely acquainted with a poem more thoroughly romantic in conception and sentiment, than "Gallus," the tenth eclogue of Virgil; and Macaulay, in his "Lays of Ancient Rome," has turned some of its legends to fine poetical account. Where can be found, for instance, a prettier, or more suggestive picture, than the passage in his "Virginia," which some inspired painter might make immortal upon canvas, as it is in verse: - "With her small tablets in her hand, and her satchel on her arm, Home she went bounding from the school, nor dreamed of shame or harm." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Features of Society: In Old and in New England Of British birth and training, I began to reside in New England at an age sufficiently mature for the memories of the Old World to be enduring, while my mind was yet plastic enough to receive fair and unprejudiced impressions of the New. The following pages, therefore, so far as they apply to New England, are not the crude comments of a sojourner, or the hasty observations of a traveler. They are the fruit of thought and of experience, on the farm, in the office, in the court, in all the varied phases of life of which an employe in journalism is a witness, and often a part. The articles in reply to Mr. Mallock's work on Property and Progress appeared originally as editorial contributions in the columns of the Providence Journal. Download or read book Norwood written by Henry Ward Beecher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norwood: Or, Village Life in New England Life Before the Civil War, I had for several years been a regular contributor to the New York Ledger. During that great conflict I had almost entirely ceased writing for it. But when the war was closed, I was not unwilling to seek rest or relaxation from the exhausting excitement of public affairs, by turning my mind into entirely new channels of thought and interest. In this mood I received Mr. Bonner's proposal to write a story for the Ledger. Had it been a request to carve a statue or build a man-of-war, the task would hardly have seemed less likely of accomplishment. A very moderate reader, even, of fictions, I had never studied the mystery of their construction. Plot and counterplot, the due proportion of parts, the whole machinery of a novel, seemed hopelessly outside of my studies. But after-considerations came to my relief. I reflected that any real human experience was intrisically interesting; that the life of a humble family for a single day, even if not told as skilfully as Wordsworth sung the humble aspects of the natural world, or as minutely faithful as Crabbe depicted English village-life, could hardly fail to win some interest. The habit of looking upon men as the children of God, and heirs of immorality, can hardly fail to clothe the simplest and most common elements of daily life with importance, and even with dignity. Nothing is trivial in the education of the King's Son! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New-England Tale, or Sketches of New England Character and Manners Tm-z writer of this tale has made an humble effort to add something to the scanty stock of native American literature, Any attempt to conciliate favour by apolo gies would be unavailing and absurd. In this free country, no person is under any obligation to write; and the public (un fortunately) is under no obligation to read. It is certainly desirable 'to possess some sketches of the character and manners of our own country, and if this has been done with any degree of success, it would be wrong to doubt that it will find a reception sufficiently favourable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Customs of New England A reason why Curiosity thus notices things of greater and less importance is, that it may have a symmetry in its impres sions Of human customs, actions, and character. It eves the forest in some paradisiacal portion of the earth, and singles out for its admiring gaze a fair-proportioned tree, crowned with abundance of flowers, even more beautiful and charm ing than those of the magnolia, in our own adopted Floridas. But were it to notice nothing else, except these ornaments of the landscape, and to throw out from the means of its grati fication the roots, trunk, limbs, and leaves, on which they depend for their subsistence and attraction, it would violate the laws of correct taste, indelibly and divinely inscribed on every well-trained and rightly-ordered mind. SO would it b at fault, were it to seize only on the most prominent features of the portraiture, which the pencil Of truth has drawn to represent men of other years, and, at the same time, pass over the rest of the graphic sketch as if altogether unworthy of a single glance. Its true province is to collect the small as well as the great; to notice the frieze, the cornice, the architrave, and base, as well as the shaft of ancient ages, that it may know the correct proportions of Agrippa's Pantheon. Thus faithful to its trust, Curiosity furnishes us with the customs of our ancestors as a topic on which we may look and not be altogether unrewarded for our attention. In the accomplishment of this enterprise, we have not always a compass, nor a cloudless polar star, for our guide. Still we may venture in the hope that we may fare better than our fears. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the hour when the Puritan baby opened his eyes in bleak New England he had a Spartan struggle for life. In summer-time he fared comparatively well, but in winter the ill-heated houses of the colonists gave to him a most chilling and benumbing welcome. Within the great open fireplace, when fairly scorched in the face by the glowing flames of the roaring wood fire, he might be bathed and dressed, and he might be cuddled and nursed in warmth and comfort; but all his baby hours could not be spent in the ingleside, and were he carried four feet away from the chimney on a raw winter's day he found in his new home a temperature that would make a modern infant scream with indignant discomfort, or lie stupefied with cold.
