This book was released on 1986 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the copies of 101 Old-Babylonian texts from the Collection of the Babylonian Section (CBS) kept in the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as full indices to these texts. Almost all the tablets come from the Sippar region and have a juridical or administrative character. One group of texts provides new and additional documentation for the study of the rental of the "journey of the divine weapon". Some texts give more information on the role and integration of the Kassites in Old-Babylonian society. Most interesting are the so-called "Quasi-Hullen-tafeln", closely related to a group of tablets belonging to the archives of Ur-Utu at Tell ed-Der. The seal impressions on the tablets, both text and representation, are studied by G. Voet, providing copies and description.

Book excerpt: In ancient Mesopotamia, men training to be scribes copied model letters in order to practice writing and familiarize themselves with epistolary forms and expressions. Similarly, model contracts were used to teach them how to draw up agreements for the transactions typical of everyday economic life. This volume makes available a trove of previously unknown tablets and fragments, now housed in the Shøyen Collection, that were produced in the training of scribes in Old Babylonian schools. Following on Old Babylonian Texts in the Schøyen Collection, Part One: Selected Letters, this volume publishes the contents of sixty-five tablets bearing Akkadian letters used to train scribes and twenty-six prisms and tablets carrying Sumerian legal texts copied in the same context. Each text is presented in transliterated form and in translation, with appropriate commentary and annotations and, at the end of the book, photographs of the cuneiform. The material is made easily navigable by a catalogue, bibliography, and indexes. This collection of previously unknown documents expands the extant corpus of educational texts, making an essential contribution to the study of the ancient world.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains 26 contributions to literature, philosophy, linguistics and epigraphy in Islamic culture, ranging from pre-Islamic poetry to contemporary prose, from the Ihwan as-Safa to the theology of Mawdudi, from lexicography to epigraphy. These papers were read at the Eighteenth International Congress of the Union Europeenne des Arabisants et Islamisants, organized by the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) from 3 to 10 September 1996. A second volume of proceedings, that appears along with this one (OLA 86), is more concerned with questions of actuality and political organisation, including Christian minorities in the Arab world, in their relation to the Muslim environment. As such the two volumes put together, will provide to the world of learning, we may say, an overall picture of the current scientific investigations about Islamic culture and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Qoheleth's vocabulary is the continuation of that on the grammar (OLA 41), published in 1992. All lexemes occurring in Qoh are examined for the specific connotations they have in this book. Chapter I deals with Biblical Hebrew words that are frequently and idiosyncratically used in Qoh. The subject of Chapter II are words that are less frequently used, yet can be considered to have some typical connotations in Qoh. Then follows in Chapter III the study of classical BH words that are less typical of Qoh, yet demand some attention. Chapter IV offers an analysis of the words that occur only in Qoh and in the last chapter, the reader finds short notes on the remaining words, those which require no special analysis. Throughout this monograph, attention is given to Late Biblical Hebrew, Aramaisms and Graecisms, in continuity with the grammatical studies in vol. I.

Book Synopsis Dispute Poems and Dialogues in the Ancient and Mediaeval Near East by : G. J. Reinink
Download or read book Dispute Poems and Dialogues in the Ancient and Mediaeval Near East written by G. J. Reinink and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989 the University of Groningen celebrated its 375th anniversary. Near Eastern Studies, in one form or another, have been part of the Groningen curriculum almost from the beginning. For this reason the Department of Middle-Eastern Languages and Cultures decided to contribute to the anniversary celebrations by organizing an international Symposium and a Workshop on The Literary Debate in Semitic and Related Literatures. The topic of the Symposium and the Workshop was chosen and prepared by the members of the research programme Disclosure of Semitic Texts. Since 1985 the literary debate in the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hebrew, Aramaic/Syriac and Arabic language and literature has been a central theme within this Groningen research programme. Because the research group sees as one of its tasks to place the study of the literary and cultural heritage of the Ancient and Mediaeval Near East also in the wider context of its connection with Classical Antiquity and the European Middle Ages, specialists in Byzantine and Mediaeval Studies were also invited to contribute to the Symposium and Workshop. The present volume contains the contributions presented during the Symposium and Workshop on The Literary Debate in the Semitic and Related Literatures. Some of the more important issues regarding matters of genesis, development and possible interdependence of the dispute poems, dialogues and related texts, which can all be subsumed under the general type of 'debate', are discussed in the introduction, which also reflects a number of points raised in the discussions during the Workshop itself.

Book Synopsis Studies in Aramaic Inscriptions and Onomastics by : Edward Lipiński
Download or read book Studies in Aramaic Inscriptions and Onomastics written by Edward Lipiński and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1975 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of Aramaic inscriptions from the 9th century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D. are revisited in this fourth volume of Studies. After the stele of Tel Dan, the epitaph of Kuttamuwa from Zincirli, and the inscription found at Tepe Qalaichi, Aramaic dockets from Dur-Katlimmu are re-examined, distinguishing a court ruling concerning theft, agreements regarding mortgage, guarantee, indemnity, barley and silver loans, and the particular nsk-loan. Next are examined "cadastral" reports from Idumaea, some inscriptions from Hellenistic times, a divorce bill from the Roman period, several Palmyrene dedications, epitaphs, and honorific inscriptions, as well as some Hatraean texts, mainly related to Adiabene. Finally, Mercionism is considered as background of a saying on "two gods," ascribed to Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba. Like in the preceding volumes of Studies, detailed indexes list the inscriptions, the personal names and the place-names examined, as well as other subjects.

Book Synopsis The Coffin of Heqata by : Harco Willems
Download or read book The Coffin of Heqata written by Harco Willems and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coffin published in this book represents a type that had some popularity in southern Upper Egypt in the early Middle Kingdom, but which, despite its extraordinary decoration had not attracted attention so far. The most striking feature of the decoration is that the object friezes - the pictorial rendering of ritual implements usually found on coffin interiors of the period - also include complete ritual scenes, some of which are attested only here. Apart from this, the decoration includes an extensive selection of the religious texts know as the Coffin Texts. The author first studies the archaeological context and dating of the coffin and attempts a reconstruction of the construction procedures from his technical description of the monument. The detailed account of the decoration in the rest of the book interprets the ritual iconography and offers fresh translations and interpretations of the Coffin Texts. A methodological innovation is that he regards the scenes and texts not as individual decoration elements, but as components of an integral composition. The background of this composition is argued to be a view of life in the hereafter in which the deceased is involved in an unending cycle of ritual action which reflects the funerary rituals that were actually performed on earth. On the one hand, these netherworldly rituals aim at bringing the deceased to new life by mummification, on the other the newly regenerated deceased partakes in embalming rituals for gods representing his dead father (Osiris or Atum). These gods, in their turn, effectuate the deceased's regeneration. The entire process results in a cycle of resuscitation in which the afterlife of the deceased and of the 'father gods' are interdependent. The sociological bias of this interpretation, with its emphasis on kinship relations, differs significantly from earlier attempts to explain Egyptian funerary religion.

Download or read book Society and Economy in the Eastern Mediterranean, C. 1500-1000 B.C. written by Michael Heltzer and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1988 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The actual progress in the study of social and economic structures of Late Bronze Age societies requires a general overview of the historical process in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean as a whole. This was the purpose of the symposium the proceedings of which are collected in the form of articles in the present volume. They are studies dealing with the Mycenaean world, with the Hittite Empire, Nuzi, Emar, Alalakh, Ugarit, the Pharaonic lands in the Izreel Valley. Particular attention is paid to the trade between the Aegean and the Levant, as well as to the Sea-Peoples. The proceedings give a comprehensive view of the social and economic historical process in the Eastern Mediterranean between 1500 and 1000 B.C. and constitute an important contribution to the study of this crucial period in the history of the Ancient Middle East.
Book Synopsis A Hebrew Alexander Romance According to MS London, Jews' College No. 145 by : Leo (Archipresbyter)
Download or read book A Hebrew Alexander Romance According to MS London, Jews' College No. 145 written by Leo (Archipresbyter) and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader is presented here with a study of the text of a Hebrew manuscript which is a medieval version of the Alexander Romance or the legendary history of Alexander the Great. The Hebrew text in this unique manuscript, known as MS London, is a translation of the Historia de Preliis Alexandri Magni, a widespread Latin version on the Alexander Romance. The Latin text was very useful for establishing an almost complete text of the London version and for identifying names and terms. A comparison of our text with other Hebrew sources on Alexander was of similar help in establishing a correct reading. The introduction which precedes the text and the English translation offers a survey of research into the history and development of Alexander traditions in Greek, Latin and Hebrew literature as well as a detailed analysis of the present text concerning its language, style and themes. This study is concluded by selective notes to the text and indices on personal and geographical names and foreign terms with their Latin equivalents.
