Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New Theology It has now become a practical one. A de cision is now being made whether we will continue with the church of our former choice, or unite with those who, without changing their name, have organized a new body. With a view of giving information to such as desire to ascertain on which side the truth lies, we shall present, in as concise a manner as the case will admit, the distinguishing fea tures of the New Theology - comparing them, as we proceed, with those doctrines which have, by way of contrast, been denominated old. For the sentiments of the Old School we shall refer to the Confession of Faith of the Presbyterian church and to standard Calvin istic writers. We think this cannot be rea sonably objected to, even by our New School brethren; since they have never charged the former with departing from the Confession of Faith. For the New School doctrines, we shall make quotations from the professors at New Haven, Mr. F ihney, and various minis ters in the Presbyterian church. We quote from those first named, because Dr. Taylor and his associates, though belonging to ah other denomination, are regarded as the mo dern authors of these speculations; and Mr. Finney, until within a few years past, belong ed to our body, and preached and published most of his sentiments on these subjects be fore he left the church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is no less than to provide an account of the unfolding of the mind of God in history, through the successive agents of his special revelation. Vos handles this under three main divisions: the Mosaic epoch of revelation, the prophetic epoch of revelation, and the New Testament. Such an historical approach is not meant to supplant the work of the systematic theologian; nevertheless, the Christian gospel is inextricably bound up with history, and the biblical theologian thus seeks to highlight uniqueness of each biblical document in that succession. The rich variety of Scripture is discovered anew as the progressive development of biblical themes is explicated. To read these pages--the fruit of Vos' 39 years of teaching biblical theology at Princeton - is to appreciate the late John Murray's suggestion that Geerhardus Vos was the most incisive exegete in the English-speaking world of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Theology This book has been undertaken at the request of number of my friends who feel that recent criticisms of what has come to be called New Theology ought to be dealt with in some comprehensive and systematic way. With this suggestion my own judgment concurs, but only so far as my own pulpit teaching is concerned. I cannot pretend to speak for anyone else, and therefore this monograph must not be understood as an authoritative exposition of the views held and expounded by other preachers who may be in sympathy with the New Theology. From its very nature, as I hope the following pages will show, the New Theology cannot be a creed, but its adherents have a common stand point. My only reason for calling this book by that title is that a considerable section of the public at present persists in regarding me as in a special way the exponent of it; indeed from the correspondence which has been proceeding in the press it is evident that many people credit me with having invented both the name and the thing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Theology and the Old Religion: Being Eight Lectures, Together With Five Sermons This volume consists mainly of the substance of lectures delivered in the Cathedral of Birmingham at the midday services in Lent of this year. The lectures were delivered only from notes, and were not completely reported. They have therefore been written entirely afresh, with amplification and rearrangement. They are now in eight, instead of six, portions. But I have still called them lectures, as they retain the form and manner of lectures. I have added some sermons preached on other occasions. This involves - in the case of the first three sermons - some repetition, which I hope will be forgiven, as I thought that the point of view of each of the sermons was sufficiently different from that of the lectures to justify its preservation; and they amplify and expand points of importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Theology and Modern Ideas What grammar is to language and science to nature, that Biblical theology is to Scripture. The business of the theologian is to detect the system of Divine Truth which underlies the strangely varied surface of the Bible. The present manual has to do with the Old Testament, which contains the foundation truths common to the true faith of Israel and to Christianity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Theology of the Old Testament Of late Systematic Theology has been somewhat neglected in certain parts of the Protestant world, and indeed has fallen into disrepute, more stress being laid upon the results of Biblical Theology. We are told that in Systematic Theology we have the deduc tions and speculations of men while in Biblical The ology we have the pure teaching of the Word of God. But let us not forget that the man who takes up the Bible now without reference to what has been done towards its elucidation in the past, and without being guided by the development of doctrine, is exactly as foolish as the man who would undertake to take up any branch of science without regard to what has been done before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Theology: Re-Stated in Sermons This book is not a Body of Divinity, as its title would seem to indicate. It is simply a collection of sermons, all of which, except two or three, were delivered on ordinary occasions, at various intervals, during a ministry of thirty six years. The author has called it The Old Theology, because, while it contains most of his theological views, he trusts that no doctrine will be found on its pages which is not at least eighteen hundred years behind the times. In these latter days many new things in theology have been said, with which the author is not in sympathy, and he has been led to publish these sermons in the hope that some good may be accomplished by a re-statement of the sounder doctrines of centuries ago. The unrest of the age has produced many recent inventions, and these in turn have produced more unrest. In the old paths wherein our fathers walked, and in which Christ and the apostles led the wav we find rest - rest for our souls. H. H. T. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive exposition, a leading New Testament scholar explores the unfolding theological unity of the entire Bible from the vantage point of the New Testament. G. K. Beale, coeditor of the award-winning Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, examines how the New Testament storyline relates to and develops the Old Testament storyline. Beale argues that every major concept of the New Testament is a development of a concept from the Old and is to be understood as a facet of the inauguration of the latter-day new creation and kingdom. Offering extensive interaction between the two testaments, this volume helps readers see the unifying conceptual threads of the Old Testament and how those threads are woven together in Christ. This major work will be valued by students of the New Testament and pastors alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Infinite and the Old Theology The following pages have been written under the stress of that conviction, which the intervening years have but deepened and confirmed. Rational theology is a legitimate and venerable member of the great family of spiritual enterprises of man: natural science, philosophy, jurisprudence, religion, art, mathematics, theology. These are all of them children of one great passion: the imperious craving of the human spirit for an inner ideal adjustment of life to the tragic limitations of life in a flowing world. The distinctive problems of rational theology are regarded as in a special sense originating in what may be called the supernalizing tendence or power of the human mind. This propensity or power, so strange and so famil iar in every category of the understanding, ever and everywhere manifesting the pres ence of a kind of divine energy in the world, is a 'natural' agency, being at once a human faculty and a cosmic force, deeper than will; and so rational theology is con ceived to be a species of 'natural' science that branch of it which has for its special task to study and to appraise the phenomena of Idealization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good and Evil: A Study in Biblical Theology Old Testament for Biblical in the sub-title. But I wanted to use all the resources of the Bible as far as possible, and so preferred to use a com prehensive term. I have not been able to enter the field of the New Testament save for occasional illustration, for my time was limited. For the same reason I have not pretended to use all the material in the Hebrew sources; but I think I have been able nevertheless to bring in practically all the theories on the problem of good and evil offered by the sacred writers. The treatment is reasonably complete so far as the subject is con cerned, though it was not possible to describe all the cases or to cite all of the illustrative texts.
