Born amid the Progressive reformation of traditional state government, the state has been host to every major subsequent force in American state politics. Grassroots agrarian radicalism, a potent Ku Klux Klan, the turmoil of the Great Depression, the post-World War II revolution in the federal relationship, the emergence of modern Republican conservatism--all these have made Oklahoma a laboratory of political change. Aware of the scholarly literature of political scientists and historians of other states, the authors have incorporated many of their findings to develop a new perspective from which to view Oklahoma's political history. Yet the color and excitement of state politics have not been lost in this careful analysis of how the system has evolved. In A Life on Fire, Connie Cronley tells the story of Catherine Ann “Kate” Barnard (1875–1930), a fiery political reformer and the first woman elected to state office in Oklahoma, as commissioner of charities and corrections in 1907—almost fifteen years before women won the right to vote in the United States. Born to hardscrabble settlers on the Nebraska prairie, Barnard committed her energy, courage, and charismatic oratory to the cause of Progressive reform and became a political powerhouse and national celebrity. As a champion of the poor, workers, children, the imprisoned, and the mentally ill, Barnard advocated for compulsory education, prison reform, improved mental health treatment, and laws against child labor. Before statehood, she stumped across the Twin Territories to unite farmers and miners into a powerful political alliance. She also helped write Oklahoma’s Progressive constitution, creating what some heralded as “a new kind of state.” But then she took on the so-called “Indian Question.” Defending Native orphans against a conspiracy of graft that reached from Oklahoma to Washington, D.C., she uncovered corrupt authorities and legal guardians stealing oil, gas, and timber rights from Native Americans’ federal allotments. In retaliation, legislators and grafters closed ranks and defunded her state office. Broken in health and heart, she left public office and died a recluse. She remains, however, a riveting figure in Oklahoma history, a fearless activist on behalf of the weak and helpless.

The black state movement begins in Indian Territory as the black Indians battle fears that allotment will displace them and the loss of land to farm would leave them bereft. J. Milton Turner, a black diplomat from Missouri has President Rutherford B. Hayes's ear. Turner and his able team of attorneys and accountants raise significant funds to support a home for the black Indians in the neighboring two million acres referred to as the unassigned lands. APRIL 22, 1889 is the most important day in Oklahoma history. That celebrated day the Federal Government surrendered legal possession of the unassigned lands. The lush lands of the "fair gods" fell into human hands, white human hands. But the romance dimmed when the weather turned rough and the ground proved hard. Absent black hands, plows stood idle, mules went unfed and cotton remained unchopped -causing half of the fifty thousand ne'er do wells who made the famed '89 run to abandon dreams of ease and wealth and move on. The Langston Herald newspaper, owned and edited by two mullato men kept a tally of abandoned claims. They hired agents in southern cities to distribute the Herald and exhort the industrious class among the five million former slaves to come to Oklahoma Territory, get a free farm, and live in a place where colored Sheriffs and colored government officials rule. When the number of blacks in Oklahoma Territory equals the whites, there is pressure on President Benjamin Harrison to appoint Edwin McCabe, a man called the Bright Jewel of the colored race, the first governor of Oklahoma Territory. The black state movement crescents in the second Oklahoma run of 1891. Blacks fight to put half the nearly one million acres available into skilled dark hands. What really happened in the run of 1891 and its aftermath is largely unknown until now.
